For the left field void, I would explore trades for Alex Dickerson and David Peralta. Looking at the rosters, both may be available and could fit in nicely here without costing us a ton. I'd also explore a minor league deal with Ben Revere. I like what he brought to our lineup when he was here.

Give Aroldis Chapman whatever he wants. Unleash him on world. Expect good things.

Actually we don't. Donaldson is really the only elite power guy. Tulo, Martin and Travis are all around average to slightly above.

Nothing wrong with that. How many teams even have multiple elite power bats?

Could Pillar get shopped this offseason?

I'm not sure if the return is worth it. Not sure if teams will pay out for defensive numbers, staggering though they may be. I could be wrong though. Just hang on to the 3+ outfield defense wins IMO unless he becomes part of a no-brainer package.

Luis Valbuena makes a lot of sense (I'm on about year 4 of saying this) if he isn't stuck on playing 3rd. Hamstring issues will bring down his FA value. I feel like the Jays need more guys that have some position versatility. I'd also see what Osuna could get in return.

He'd be solid. Where would you play him? 1st? DH would be cool he could spill Donaldson, Travis and whoever is at 1B.

If we don't bring back any of the major free agents, and strike out in free agency, our trade assets are limited without weakening the team and/or needing to replace the traded player.

Trade options:

Note I'm not advocating any of these trades, just listing players I consider most likely to be available if we want to enter the trade market.

Happ & Estrada

Pros

Sell high.

Starting pitching depth is the team's strength, easiest place to give up something for a gain elsewhere.

Cons

Reasonable salaries.

Reliable starters.

Posted

Devon Travis

Pros

Injury prone, with Tulo always a injury risk gives us a chance to get a middle infielder we can rely on to be in the lineup every day.

Not the best defensively.

Cons

When fit, excellent offensive player.

Still young, injuries may simply be bad luck

Kevin Pillar

Pros

His value will likely never be higher.

His defense will eventually decline, when that happens he's useless.

Cons

Elite defense more than makes up for poor offense.

Low salary with years of control.

Already short on outfielders.

Posted

Dalton Pompey

Pros

Appears to have all the tools.

A change of scenery could kick start his career.

Gibbons doesn't appear to trust him, likely as a direct result of his poor start to 2015 being attributed to being "unprepared mentally".

Cons

If he puts it all together he could be a controllable, solid contributor for years.

We are short on quality outfielders.

Justin Smoak

Pros

He's not very good.

Perfect big league player to package with a prospect to obtain a salary dump player (i.e. Low cost starter to fill 1B until a prospect is ready to start could be worth something to some teams)

Cons

Hard to see anyone give up anything useful.

We have no other 1B if Edwin doesn't re-sign.

Everyone else IMO either is too valuable (JD, Sanchez, Osuna), has minimal trade value, is a cheap squad player, is a prospect, or would be more difficult to upgrade than keep (e.g Tulo, Martin).

Sorry for the multiple posts!

I'm on board with trading Happ or Estrada. Probably Happ.

It's our position of strength. If we could get a decent 1B for him, as much as it pains me to say it, we could easily resign Dickey to replace him and use Dickey as the 5th starter.

Maybe move Happ since his value is higher right now. Give Biagini a chance to replace him in the rotation.

Not a bad idea.

If the return is nice you consider trading either I agree. Estrada is a free agent next year so maybe you want to hold on him and collect a first. Happ signed through age 36 season you don't have that guaranteed. Plus I think this season was simply a dream season for him. I just don't see anyway he can put up this kind of season again. I expect regression and like taking advantage of overachievers on the trade market.

You can consider streching out both Biagini and Osuna. Sign a veteran innings eating. Have a battle for a 5th starter spot. Once again depends on the return. They are both on such manageable contracts.

Definitely don't want to see Osuna traded. I don't know why that was suggested. His injury situation got blown up and came back and had a great playoffs. The gutsy effort against Texas. Pitching 4 of the 5 games against Cleveland including 3 in a row. I don't know how you can be concerned with his arm. Gibbons just can't overuse him in 17.

This once hes hot ******** hes gotta come in regardless of score needs to stop. He came in way to many times this year where it was simply overkill. We have a nice bullpen makeup. Perhaps some depth and another high leverage reliever will allow Gibbons to chill the f*** out.

Wtf he pitched like 70-80 innings this year, how long are we gonna keep protecting the arm for? That's like telling me Sanchez is on an innings limit next year below 200 lol

I can see the logic in trading Happ from a sell high perspective, but this is his 2nd straight 3 WAR season, so I don't think it's necessarily a mirage. Even if he declines he will still probably be worth the deal he is on, and the Jays still lack SP depth in the upper minors so he's not expendable.
