ComeTogether Verified Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 Happ vs Tomlin is a 50/50? Wow. They have home field advantage.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 I don't get it. Like if Tulowitzki gets bumped up one spot in the lineup, is that supposed to mess with his head or something? Yeah it's weak and I don't even know where it's coming from. Did Martin have the 5th spot to himself all season? I don't recall that being the case. I'm pretty sure he's batted 6th plenty of times.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 He had a hot August and it hasn't changed ever since.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 I know Donaldson has bad hip, but man, that couldn't have been placed any better to score him. I can't remember the bad call, but he looked silly when he did swing in that ab. The very first pitch I believe was a slider several inches off of the plate inside, absurd call. Falling behind to a pitcher like Kluber makes it so tough. I don't begrudge Jose for it.

I'm sure Gibby feels like this question is only being asked because of tonight's game, when really it's something that could (should?) have happened a while ago.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 October Martin looking like April Martin *sigh*

I know these numbers mean little but: Batting 5th this year: 167AB .204/.322 .699OPS Batting 6th this year: 79AB .316/.439 1.084OPS

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 I don't get it. Like if Tulowitzki gets bumped up one spot in the lineup, is that supposed to mess with his head or something? I usually s*** on bad lineups (or lineups I think are bad) but flipping 5-6 after a tough loss might be bad people skills. If Gibby thinks it might negatively f*** up morale then it's not terrible... I guess. I don't know. He's also not afraid to turn the late game into the Osuna Show either. In-game managing and pre-game managing are different. For the record I prefer all the best hitters clumped together. I'm just trying to find a rationale for a decision that puts an all-time great hitter beneath a merely pretty good one (in spurts).
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 According to Brooks baseball, I see the following: balls called strikes = 7 for Cleveland pitchers, 4 for Toronto strikes called balls = 4 for Cleveland pitchers, 2 for Toronto Not sure if that's more misses than usual, but the calls don't seem to favour either team.

I think a lot of those calls had Blue Jays on base so it hurt their chances of scoring runs

Mittens87 Verified Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 Everyone please remember. When we are losing and you get that hopeless frustrated feeling like "wtf I'm pretty sure I would of got a single there, why is he swinging for the fences" that there is absolutely nothing we can do. We will watch and what happens happens regardless of whether you watch and care or watch and don't care. Try detach yourself from it. Don't feel depressed if we lose but take every win here as if we're playing with house money. We're lucky to be watching games that matter Think of the poor oriole and Red Sox fans who expected to be in our shoes.

Mittens87 Verified Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 That's what I was thinking but would of been smarter to get at least one win in the bag first. But seriously don't lose confidence, we had just won 6 in a row against contenders. We don't have any weak spots in our rotation while they have 1 or 2 question marks. Win tomorrow and it's a 5 game series again
ComeTogether Verified Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 Home field advantage is huge in ALCS. This is a different game 1 in Toronton better win game 2 then. They didn't do that last year, went 0-2 coming home. win game 2, they will steal home field ad.

A lot of the Toronto favourable calls happened in 2-0 3-1 counts which the pitcher usually gets the call anyway. The Cleveland pitchers got calls on the first pitch or strike 3 in the case of Bautista and Martin. IT absolutely influenced the game. Now I don't think Diaz was trying to favour Clevleand, but rather he just isn't a good umpire.

I'm just trying to find a rationale for a decision that puts an all-time great hitter beneath a merely pretty good one (in spurts). That's a pretty solid rationale. I feel like if he puts Tulo 5th in the first lineup of the postseason, no one really question it. It's just like: "Bam, this is my playoffs lineup". That would have been the perfect time and the argument to do it would have been just as solid as it is now. It's not just about this little slump that Martin's in. Tulo is overall a better hitter. The slump merely exacerbates the bad decision, makes it really sting more than these things usually do.

I think it's more of an unfortunate incident that two of the bad calls probably cost us a run and certainly gave them a run. It didn't seem like there was any obvious favouritism. What's frustrating is that everyone, including MLB (stats are out there), knows that Diaz is a poor home plate umpire. Why does this still happen? They have better umpires available.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 I enjoyed the game even if it was frustrating to watch Kluber slide his way out of some trouble early in the game, kudos to him. Bautista was definitely hurt by 2 terrible strike calls but that's what terrible umps do. Like others, I thought Donaldson should have scored in the 1st but it's one of those plays where we'd be blasting Rivera had he been thrown out at the plate. I also thought Pillar didn't run hard out of the box on that great play by Kipnis thinking it was a single all the way. Anyway, I've totally enjoyed the end to the regular season and the playoffs and hope today is another exciting game.
