The Alford HR was already posted but Fangraphs added something about his speed:

The afternoon Fall League game was highlighted by a 410-foot blast by Blue Jays OF Anthony Alford, who posted a plus-plus run time to first base during his next at-bat.

They also have video of the swing! Very nice.

It looks like a slightly more quiet version of the JD swing, except the front leg collapses a bit on this particular swing which isn't really ideal.

Why? He's our 105th best prosect.

Damn, you got me.

You think you know your prospects well and then Todd comes along and rocks your world.

McBroom the only Jay starting in Mesas lineup today, and he went 0/4. No pitchers pitched.

Jorge Flores went 0/4, batting 9th and started at SS for Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Jesus Montero went 1/3 with a walk in the VWL.

Fairly uninteresting day all around.

Isn't Jesus basically a PED nomad at this point?

Yes, if his minor league contract is up, he's not techincally even part of the organization.

Not much to report after this latest loss with many Jays seeing action. Greene pitched much better than his line suggests. They charged him with an earned run in the first but the SS should have been charged with an error that would have got him out of the inning. I sat behind some of the scouts and watched the gun...he was hitting mid 90's with his fastball with a high of 98 and his cutter was around 89 with a really sharp break to it. I was impressed with his outing.

Tim Mayza actually hit 100 with his 1st pitch and sat around 97-98 although he was hit hard. Alford made a great catch in right and hit the ball hard but had very little to show for it.

It was nice to see Baretto strike out 3 times again tonight. No games on Sunday...will be at the game Mon to see Tebow against the Solar Sox.

I'd like to see him reduce the movement in his hands a little bit, particularly rocking them back as the pitch is being thrown. It does provide more power but I don't think adding a little more power will be relevant as far as his skill set is concerned. Keep the hands still and maintain only a forward motion in the swing. He's strong enough regardless while increasing his contact percentage, thus utilizing his speed. The current hand movement may not bode well in the MLB.

Hitters use that as a timing mechanism. JD does the same thing. If you watch the clip as he prepares for his load the hands stop, so I wouldn't be concerned.

I'm actually really impressed with that swing.

ball game 023.jpgball game 023.jpgSure glad I decided not to watch the Jays game and take in the AFL game at Old Scottsdale Stadium. Alford DH'd tonight and drove the ball to right for his 2 hits, the first was a double over the bag at 1st...he has some serious speed.

The star of the night, however, was McBroom who looked bad in his 1st two at bats. He proceeded to hit a 3 run homer and a grand slam both of which were bombs...this kid has some serious power.

Side note...Tebow sucks.

Here are a couple pics of the stadium and Alford in the on deck circle.ball game 022.jpg

You can tell by the picture of the stadium how many people attend these games. For $5.00, you sit were you want and the crowd basically consists of you, MLB TV staffers and all the scouts and cross-checkers with their guns behind home plate.

Barreto went 4/4 today so hopefully Spats wasn't at the game or else he would have cried.

Alford 0/3, 2 walks, 1k. Jansen 0/4, McBroom 1/4

Why would anyone care what Barreto does at this point? If anything you should cheer he does well. Josh Donaldson has worked out better than anyone could have hoped when that trade was made.

I'll never understand why people would cheer against former prospects. The best thing is for a trade to work out for both clubs.

I agree. I hope Barreto becomes an MVP candidate though that's obviously an unlikely outcome.

Well you're not going to like the reason why but I will tell you anyway. Please note this is not necessarily how I feel. But winning a trade favourably without looking like we gave up any substantial talent makes people feel good inside. Donaldson is wonderful and it's extremely unlikely Barreto ever has that type of success. However after the Marlins and Mets trades which really sucked. It's nice to have a clear cut win. Trading away players that were never that great just cements the good feeling all the more.

Its ridiculous to many but satisfying to some. I hope I answered your question.

Lol. I was golfing instead. Trust me, I really don't care what Barreto becomes, I'm just so happy to have Donaldson. I've got one more game to see on Friday before heading home...hopefully Greene is pitching.

Wow!

http://2080baseball.com/2016/10/here-are-my-three-standout-prospects-from-the-first-week-of-afl-action/

I’ve seen quite a few pitchers already this fall with some MLB potential, but none have been more impressive than 21-year-old Greene. The first thing you notice is the ideal, athletic pitcher’s frame at 6’3″ which still shows some projection. He’s listed at 185 pounds, and while I do not know how accurate that is, it’s clear that there is still some room to add lean muscle weight. It’s hard not to take a look at Greene and not dream of what he can become.

But Greene isn’t just projection. There is plenty to like about his present stuff, athleticism, and delivery. Greene already shows a double-plus to elite fastball at 96-to-98 mph (T99) from an easy, clean delivery with good downhill plane. He adds a hard 86-to-87 mph slider with good tilt that one evaluator rated as a plus offering. The changeup also has the makings of an above-average pitch. He throws it with good arm speed at 84-to-85 mph and the pitch shows some nice fade, making it a potential weapon against opposite-side hitters.

Greene has added some strength over the past season, and he was able to maintain the increased velocity over his 2.1 innings on Saturday, never once dropping below 96 mph. Whether he is able to maintain that velocity deeper into the game is a question he will need to answer as he continues to develop and mature physically.

It's nice to see a scout confirm what I have been saying about Conner Greene all season. He was experimenting a lot with his changeup this season and the numbers weren't as good as they could be at times. Stat scouts miss that kind of thing and had him ranked far too low this season, many on our forum not even top 10.

I think he'll surprise those uninformed people as he gets closer to the big leagues. He's got everything you want from a big league pitcher and just needs to make the right adjustments.
