Why not both? Ala dickey/price

Liriano for twice through the order, then stroman for once or twice through the order

This would be ideal IMO.

Estrada not an option after his performance in the postseason last year?

He has a bulging disc in his back and would be on 3 days rest. Despite what Dean Blundell might tell you - he's not an option.

Stroman has the best second half xFIP in the American League, and 2nd best in all of baseball (wedged between Fernandez and Syndergaard).

And you guys want to pass him over in favour of a mediocre LHP foisted onto us in a salary dump because he's strung together a handful of good starts.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2016 Blue Jays Message Board!

Liriano has been excellent since coming to the Jays, yet you keep pandering this ******** narrative that he sucks because of a horrible April. The rational has already been explained across two threads, it's not hard to get why Liriano is the better choice. Jfc

If you're just going to jump in here and act all Godly in knowledge because you can sort a Fangraphs leaderboard by xFIP and call all others f***ing mental who don't bite... you're off your meds.

It's not just about a few good starts from Liriano, it's a combination of factors that you are being naive about including O's season results against Stroman and their inability to hit LHP all year which already gives Liriano an advantage going in... hence why he just pitched 10Ks against them in his last outing.

Stroman vs O's 2016

22.3lp

33 hits

Only 12 strikeouts

7.36 ERA

Orioles see him really well. They are going to destroy him. Not a lot of swings and misses either, if you take out his April game it's even worse

The obvious choice is Stroman gets the first 2 times through the lineup, then Liriano can handle the 3rd time through the lineup before the bullpen takes over.

Stroman has a roughly .290 wOBA against the first 2 times through the order this year, and a .355 on the 3rd time through. He's been great in the 2nd half. He's a better pitcher than Liriano overall. I understand a lot of the reasons why Liriano is a solid option too, but the right call IMHO is Stroman, although planning on an extended bullpen game.

Voted Liriano because of the O's splits... I'd be fine either way with a quick hook if either struggles early. I believe they'll go with Stroman for the simple fact it's his turn in the rotation.

Atkins sounds like he's leaning towards Liriano (hes on the Jeff Blair show rn).....

"You gotta think about pinch hit possibilities off the bench as well" Eliminating the kim weapon late in games?

"Which ever of the two we choose the other has to be ready to come out of the pen" I have a feeling that Stroman has better makeup of coming out firing strikes from the BP

But that's me reading into his statements, he's being tight lipped saying he's getting on the phone with Walker and Gibbons to go over everything and they can't go wrong with either one

Heh... figured as much.

If that is the logic Gibbons is going by then he should be fired on the spot.

I've waffled on this some but I'd start Stroman. The O's splits aren't enough to convince me that Liriano (as hot as he's been) is a better option over Stroman who had a very good year and has been a very good pitcher ever since he joined the league.

I would, however, only let Stroman face the lineup twice before moving to Liriano who would face the lineup one or two times through before getting to our bullpen.

I voted Stroman but then i looked at the splits.

O's vs RHP: 4th in baseball: 107 wRC+

O's vs LHP: 26th in baseball: 83 wRC+

Save the better pitcher for the ALDS.

its more likely that he'd say "it's cause Stro is our guy. He's been with us last year and this year and knows big pressure moments"

ALDS shouldn't matter. You should be going all out for this game. Liriano is the better choice.

Its weird why the Os would be so bad vs lefties. You would think with Jones, Machado, Trumbo, Schoop they would be good.

I agree which tells me that these splits are kind of an outlier that don't really tell us much moving forward.

Or the typical Gibby response,

"You know, Stroey was clutch for us last year vs Texas and I got a good hunch he'll kick it into gear again" followed by a wink and a huge s***-eating grin.

The thing is that we don't need to "save" a pitcher for the ALDS, since whoever pitches here isn't going again until game 4 of the DS anyways. Pitching the lefty against Baltimore is essentially better that Trumbo's crazy splits this year are an accurate reflection of his current talent and not simply a random fluctuation. Sure, Davis is expected to have a platoon split, Kim doesn't play against lefties, and Jones does also have a reversed career platoon split, but I'm not convinced that's enough to justify pitching a much worse starter.

Of course, if we actually plan this as a bullpen game where neither Liriano nor Stroman would be expected to go more than 3-4 innings, as we should be planning, then it almost becomes a question of what kind of management is better for us. Mostly, if we start Stroman, they start Kim, if we bring on Liriano to face him later, will they pinch hit for him? Or are we better to start Liriano, let them keep Kim on the bench, and then have him available late game as a pinch hitter. I think in general, I'd rather plan to have him in their lineup at the start of the game, and let him either face the lefties later in the game, or force them to take him out.

That's exactly what I could hear him saying.

Isn't it probably going to be Estrada?

It maybe could of been if he had been 100 percent healthy. But with his back issues i would doubt they would send him in on short rest.

I'm all for Liriano with Stroman piggybacking if necessary. Need to take the sting out of the lefty Bats.

I feel like Gibbons is going to want to give it to Stroman.

This decision shouldn't be up to Gibbons.
