fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 With the Grili and Osuna have been throwling lately this is a pretty bad injury. Although maybe this finally makes Gibby use Cecil for a full inning and not just a f***ing batter here and there. More like Cecil and Barnes. Feldman's getting 0 looks right now too. This is a chance for Gibby to break out of the roles for a good 5-6 games to rest Osuna, Grilli and Benoit + help structure the pen personelle for the postseason roster

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Biagini / Cecil combo is just as good. Force Gibbons to put cecil in against Lefties.... The whole 7th inning regardless of who was up was getting under my skin as is. doesn't matter if we have someone to replace Benoit. Having one less dependable reliever sucks when this could have been avoided.
WONDERBAT Verified Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Well that sucks, he was great with inherited runners. Hopefully Biagini/Cecil can pick it up.

Having one less dependable reliever sucks when this could have been avoided. Benoit was gonna have the same thing Grilli is facing now. Fatigue. These old guys can't keep throwing that hard deep in their 30s. If he's back by the ALDS I'll be happy, our pen doesn't just rely on one guy like Benoit, he's been great but the rest will do him a world of good. I also don't want to see Grilli until maybe Boston. We have Biagini, Feldman, Cecil and Barnes who can give us quality innings we'll hold it down
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I actually thought for a second last night that Smoak was just going to haul off on Sanchez with his bat after he got hit. I'm a little surprised hitters don't use the bats more often to retaliate when they get beaned on purpose like last night. I don't expect them to try and break the catchers knee or anything, but I maybe a butt end under the catchers mask or to his gut...or a bat toss at the pitcher (which would have been great last night with Severino charging the plate). I understand it would probably come with a massive suspension - but really - why should it? The ball throw 95+ at you is as/if not more dangerous a weapon as the bat would be. It sure would add a lot more spice to the bench clearing brawl (if we insist on keeping that stuff in the game).

Don't think anyone would want to risk that. The courts have shown they will act once something happens outside the realm of the actually game. Another example if a heated player got around a player/coach holding him back from an ump and slugged him you could very well see something happen too.

You can hit someone with a ball, but not with a bat, that's just the way it is.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Infamously, Juan Marichal broke his bat over the catcher's head.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 This is clearly what Smoak should have done.
JoeCarter Verified Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Lol at half the idiots ITT being the same guys in yesterday's GDT saying that brawl was no big deal and actually a "good" thing -- "gotta stand up for the team broooooooooossss!!!!" Benoit on crutches. Travis injures his surgically repaired shoulder. This isn't Monday morning QB'ing: I said it the moment Happ threw the 2nd beanball at Headley: that was fantastically stupid. Throw 1 purpose pitch, then get on with the game. Cannot overstate the stupidity of getting involved in that fracas with a team that has absolutely nothing to lose. Happ throwing 2nd beanball, Donaldson chirping from the bench, Smoak exploding like a volcano after getting hit in the shin. Why in the everloving f*** are you escalating a situation when you have everything to lose and nothing to gain.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Benoit has been one of the most consistent relievers in baseball for the last decade. Nobody can deny that this is a huge loss. If we didn't lose Cecil (who was red hot) last year we probably beat KC. Relievers are huge in the playoffs. I really don't feel comfortable with Biagini getting those big innings. Time to start trusting Cecil more. Give him high leverage innings in this last week and hopefully he can fill the 7th/8th inning gap.

It was incredibly stupid of Happ. Hell, a lot of times JD doesn't move at all and purposely takes pitches off his elbow pad for a free pass. He got on base, came around to score from an inside pitch at worst and we take exception. He walked 2 more batters that inning alone, he wasn't head hunting. It was just a stupid chain of events and I'm just glad it was Smoak leading off the inning.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Travis injuring the same shoulder that cost him almost a full season is very bad news. All f***ing preventable...

Martin might have told him to do it though you never know.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Fan590 reporting that Benoit left on crutches. Ugh Don't matter. Happ showed how big his dick is by defending Donaldson against an unintentional hbp. That's a true teammate who puts his team first. Can't wait until the baseball unwritten ******** is over with.

I would guess Travis was not injured in the Malay though. If he was there is no way he would of kept playing...
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Injuries are one thing, but I don't know why the Jays would go out of their way to instigate a brawl during a week where one key suspension could destroy our entire season. Imagine if Donaldson throws a punch and is out for 3-5 games? It was just a bad moment to pick a fight.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I would guess Travis was not injured in the Malay though. If he was there is no way he would of kept playing... It said he was. He grabbed Austin and threw him around and his very next AB he was having trouble swinging.

I know its a veteren club but perhaps Gibby should maybe tell the team to stay focuses thinking big picture. So stupid that this all could have been avoided. Now potentially 2 big pieces of the club are out for the season.

You can hit someone with a ball, but not with a bat, that's just the way it is. Well that's incredibly stupid (although I know you're right). Pitchers throw a ball 95 MPH at you, then typically throw their glove at you when you charge. The hitter is at such a disadvantage as only the helmet throw is "accepted" by the unwritten rules of baseball (which are f***ing stupid). Look how much better that fight is. I wanna see more bats! If you're going to fight - then f***ing fight. Baseball fights are as stupid as two enforcers fighting in hockey.

I think it would be amazing. I'm fascinated as to how/why throwing a 95 MPH fastball at someone's back/head on purpose is "accepted" in the sport. I mean Happ had no direct beef with Headley at all, nor did Severino with Smoak. It's really the only random act of violence that is generally accepted. Why is that and how did that come about? I'd love to see someone buck the trend and randomly haul off on the catcher when the pitcher hits him on purpose - or clock the pitcher with a flying bat. I mean if you're pissed off at someone - walk up, tell him that and punch him in the face. If we're going to act like f***ing pussies on the field and randomly throw objects at people - let's try something different once in awhile.

You wouldn't be able to prove that a pitcher threw at a batter 'on purpose' in court.

It's widely looked down upon and will give you a bad rep fast if you do it. Look at Yordano. Neither Happ or Severino threw at anyone's head yesterday as far as I saw. The general rule of thumb is to keep it below the waist, you are a pitcher, you know this? Players charging each other with bats during brawls would end in blood, death, assault charges. There is no good that could come from any of this. Truly absurd.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Even if someone is suspended it shouldn't matter much. Can just appeal so they will be in this upcoming series. My guess is guys only get fined.
