reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 It is really an interesting discussion. There was a decent summary on fangraphs about this: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/should-alex-rodriguez-retire/ To be honest I'd rather him just retire. It's tough to watch awful, washed up players continue to play just to hit milestones. Remember Fred McGriff? I'd rather ARod just walk away and be remembered as easily a top 5 player to ever play the game. Hopefully he feels the same way.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 If the Yankees are responsible for his contract, are they also responsible for any milestone payouts he may get if he does or would a new team if they pick him up?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 No. I want the Yankees to pay his contract. He can just sit at home and get paid like Vernon Wells did. He said he isn't thinking about signing with another team. I can see an NL team wanting him as a pinch hitter though. He grew up in Miami right. Marlins might make some sense.

He's made surprising comebacks before (see 2015).
admin Site Manager Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Holy s***, I thought he did retire. I thought it was the whole point of this thing. Guess I should have actually read it.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Don't retire. Play if he can. Do what you love until no one wants you.

Never understand why players walk away from the game young. Most of them regret it 10 years later when they can't play anymore. You only have one life. Unless you're injured you should keep going until you can't perform anymore. Legacy crap is nonsense. Nothing wrong with a future HOF hanging around on a teams bench for a couple years.

Girardi doesn't think he could play the field for 3 outs in the 9th when up by 3 against the worst team in the AL.

I'd like to see him maybe get a look, but if he clearly doesn't have it then he should walk away. This year he's looked terrible at the plate, not the same player he was even a year ago. It's sad to watch legends struggle this badly.

Still think you should play as long as you can. If a team is willing to give him some playing time I think he should sign there.
