He's made 400+ million in salary, not.including endorsements. He's still worth 325+ million. Even if he were walking away from it, which he isn't, how exactly would it be "stupid" to walk away from money he doesn't need at all?

Ummm you don't walk from 21 million. Especially when its going directly back into the owners pocket.

Yankees really aren't playing for anything this season, and it's not like A-Rod was taking AB's away from anyone. Start him 2-3 times a week at DH, and see if he reaches that 700 HR Milestone. Yankees could have made money from him chasing that milestone, in terms of ticket sales, merchandise etc.

I recall Yankees management fighting over the HR bonus with him when he first came back from his suspension. They made claims like "it's a tainted record so he shouldn't receive the bonus". I'm not sure how that played out, but I remember being surprised that ARod didn't speak up about when asked by the media.

He fought like hell over the $6M HR bonus last year. Yankees are definitely on the hook for his freeroll salary.

Did he?, I remember him being humble in the media when asked about it. Did he end up winning that battle with Hank?

Depends what kind of person your are, lots of athlete's walk away from money. If you're a greed driven douchebag then from that perspective it would seem stupid I guess.

I'm not a greed driven douchebag. I'm just using common sense and rational thinking.

I'd like to see you walk away from lets say $2000 from any job/contract (which is pocket change when we're talking about $21 million). I'm sure you wouldn't even think twice about walking away.

I should of phrased it better, wasn't my intent to imply you were a douchebag. Its just that at some point, when you've earned as much as Arod has, money shouldn't be a primary issue when coming to a decision whether to retire or not. That to me, would give Arod that greed driven label.

As I recall they came to an agreement that his bonus money would be donated to charity or something after a fight. The sticking point was that the contract language said his bonus would be paid when he reached "marketable HR milestones." The Yankees argued that since his suspension for doping was so public and horrible his Willie Mays passing HR could not be considered marketable since everyone thought he was Satan.

Arod said f*** you, gimme my money. Then they settled and split the money between charities

That whole situation was a gongshow, the Yankees arguing about the tainted milestones.... well maybe give back the World Series ring you got with A-Rod on your team.

Optically it was awful for both sides. The Yankees looked like morons for trying to get out of a contractual bonus and everyone still thought Arod deserved to be crucified in Times Square so the thought of him fighting for his cash was somehow also seen as stupid

He is going home after Friday's final game, then starting his mentoring job in spring training so he gets to kick it for 6 months in Miami haha.

I wanna hire him as one of our batting coaches lol. Worked for Bonds and Miami!!

It's stupid because it's his money he's entitled too. Let's not act dumb and pretend that the Yankees didn't know about the asterisks surrounding A-Rod when they penned him to a 10 year deal. It's his money and good on him to make sure he gets every last cent from the Yankees, he doesn't owe them anything -- especially with the way they treated him the past 4 years

I walked away from a 15k raise. Some people's lives don't revolve around money, sometimes you just want to be happy and less stressed. That's what my decision was about.

Exactly. They signed that deal knowing full well the last few years would be a waste. Same with Angels and Pujols.

Except with Pujols the entire contract has been a waste.

Not only athletes juice. I got buddies that do they don't play anything.

Okay but did your friends win the genetic lottery Barry bonds did? Barry bonds loses like 30 pounds and goeg several head sizes but yet he's still juicing.

Some people sure are sensitive around here. One alternative opinion and people want the mods to intervene.

By working in Miami the rest of this season he saves a lot in income taxes. Arod is always thinking. He's a business man first.

When you have the kind of money these people do they don't think about money

Yankees didn't want to play him. His agent probably asked every other mlb team and no one wanted him. Probably he was offered minor league deals

Simply put to save face he is giving up and moving on. For Arod nothing much awaits just regrets and c level celebrity prestige.

It will be depressing to not matter any more. There are those that can transition into nothingness and those who can't. Drugs will be there if he can't and alcohol.

Slings and arrows I suppose slings and arrows

Hes not walking away. Hes getting released.

I can't be bothered reading the whole thread. Does his money count as part of the payroll next year or not?
