The Buffalo Bisons had a chance to snap their losing skid against an opponent mired in one of their own, but failed to do so as the Syracuse Chiefs escaped with a 5-3 victory at Coca-Cola Field on Thursday.

 

Down 5-0 in the seventh, the Bisons scored twice as Chris Colabello singled to CF and moved up a bag on Jesus Montero's liner off of Jason Martinson's glove at short. Domonic Brown then came through with an RBI double to cut the deficit to four

 

With two out and the bases loaded, Dalton Pompey bounced a routine grounder to second but Christopher Bostick booted it, allowing Buffalo's second run to score. Ryan Goins then scorched a grounder down the first-base line but the hot-shot was handled by Caleb Ramsey, ending the rally.

 

The Herd tallied once more in the eighth as Colabello belted a ball just beyond the wall in right-center field.

 

"I'm just trying to get back to being myself. Things have been going a little fast for me," said Colabello postgame.

 

"You can have a lot of out-of-body experiences when you're getting back to hitting again because things go a little fast on you. Little by little you start to get back into it."

 

The first baseman's second home run with the Herd cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3.

 

Buffalo brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two out, but Rafael Martin got Dalton Pompey to groundout as he earned his 20th save.

 

"If you look at the difference between the two teams tonight, they drove in some runs with guy in scoring position. I think Domonic was the only hit that we got with someone in scoring position," noted manager Gary Allenson.

 

"5-0 seemed like 10-0 the way we've been swinging the bats. But we came back, so that was a plus."

 

Chiefs' starter A.J. Cole managed to spread eight hits and walk around seven innings. The 6-foot-5 righty allowe two runs, one earned, as he moved back to .500 at 7-7.

 

For the sixth time in seven starts, Drew Hutchison lasted exactly six innings. The right-hander allowed just four hits but was tagged with three runs and the loss, bringing his record to 6-5 this season. Hutchison struck out six more batters, bringing his total to 110 over 102 innings.

 

BISONS NOTES:

Prior to Thursday's action, the Blue Jays signed catcher Erik Kratz to a minor league deal. Kratz is expected to join the Herd on Friday…Tony Sanchez has been granted his release as a corresponding move…Ryan Tepera was also activated by the Bisons earlier in the day…With the seventh-inning double, Domonic Brown extended his hitting streak to 13 games…Buffalo's nine-game drought matches its longest since May 22-30 of 2003.

Richmond, VA - Derrick Loveless drilled his sixth home run in a Fisher Cats uniform, but the two runs would not be enough as the Richmond Flying Squirrels came from behind for a 4-2 victory on Thursday night at The Diamond.

 

Brandon Bednar went 3-for-5 and scored the go-ahead run as part of a seventh inning rally that saw Richmond take a 3-2 lead after trailing most of the night. After the Flying Squirrels loaded the bases against Tim Mayza, Richmond plated the go-ahead run with Chris Shaw's single to right field. Steven Duggar would add an insurance run in the eighth inning with an RBI double.

 

New Hampshire struck first in the second inning with Loveless' homer, following an error that allowed Ryan Lavarnway to reach. However, the Fisher Cats struggled after that against Richmond starter Sam Coonrod, who earned his third win of the season. Rowdy Tellez went 1-for-4 in his return to the lineup.

Making his New Hampshire debut, Wilmer Font held the Flying Squirrels to just one run on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings.

 

The four-game series with the Flying Squirrels continues tomorrow night from The Diamond. Taylor Cole is set to make his eighth start since getting called up from Advanced-A Dunedin. Cole is 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA over his last four starts. Massachusetts native Tyler Beede is in line for his team-leading 18th start for Richmond. First pitch Friday night is at 7:05 PM.

DUNEDIN, FL - The Lakeland Flying Tigers (11-20) belted five home runs, four of which were two run shots, in the series finale against the Dunedin Blue Jays (20-14) on Thursday night. LHP Matt Hall (W, 3-1) allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out eight over six innings in Lakeland's 11-6 win.

 

The Jays started the scoring with SS Richard Urena's two-run bomb to left in the first inning, his first long ball as a right-handed batter this season. Urena collected four hits a night after being named Toronto's new top prospect.

 

Lakeland used the home run ball to claw back and take the lead. RHP Chris Rowley (L, 8-3) surrendered four home runs over his four innings. DH Kade Scivicque went solo in the second to cut the lead in half. An inning later, is was SS A.J. Simcox who put the Flying Tigers up 3-2 with a two-run blast. In the fourth, LF Christin Stewart's FSL-leading 23rd dinger preceded 3B Zac Shephard's two-run catapult.

 

RHP Luis Santos relieved Rowley in the fifth for an extended outing, one he would finish with five innings and eight strikeouts. He allowed four runs including another two-run homer, this one courtesy of C Drew Longley.

 

The Jays tried to claw back, but the deficit was just too large. RHP Austin Kubitza (S, 1) picked up a three-inning save despite the game being out of reach.

 

The Jays begin a four game series at home with the Jupiter Hammerheads on Friday night. RHP Sean Reid-Foley starts for Dunedin against a TBD pitcher for Jupiter with first pitch at 6:30 pm.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - In a potential playoff preview, Justin Maese set the tone with six scoreless innings and the Lansing Lugnuts (18-15, 54-49) handed the Bowling Green Hot Rods (19-13, 56-45) a 3-1 loss on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

 

The Lugnuts victory ended Bowling Green's franchise high nine-game home winning streak and ten-game home run streak.

 

The Hot Rods currently hold the top playoff spot in the Eastern Division, 1.5 games above the Lugnuts, who sit in the wild card slot, but their explosive offense was stymied by a trio of Lansing pitchers.

 

19-year-old Maese (Win, 1-0), ranked the Blue Jays' #9 prospect by MLB Pipeline, struck out six batters while scattering three hits and a walk.

 

The Lugnuts scratched out a slim lead to back his efforts, scoring an unearned run in the fourth inning on a two-out dropped fly by first baseman Matt Eureste, and adding a second tally in the fifth on a Ryan Hissey sacrifice fly.

 

Bowling Green threatened in the eighth against reliever Kirby Snead, scoring an unearned run on a Kevin Padlo RBI single and putting runners at second and third with two outs. Snead was unbowed, retiring Brett Sullivan on a routine fly to left.

 

Ryan Metzler rebuilt the lead to two runs in the ninth, drawing a two-out walk, stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a passed ball.

 

Andrew Case took it from there, pitching around a two-out walk to record his third save in as many chances.

 

In the win, Lugnuts designated hitter Max Pentecost went 2-for-3 with a single, double, walk, stolen base and run scored. Pentecost, rated the Blue Jays' #11 prospect, has reached base six times in the series and in 52 of 56 games played with the Lugs.

 

Lansing sends right-hander Jordan Romano (2-1, 1.42) to the mound for the Friday series finale, a rubber match in the three-game series, slated for 7:35 p.m. Bowling Green counters with ace lefty Genesis Cabrera (7-4, 3.80).

Nice to see Urena kicking the door down this season. Would be nice if that K rate plummets a bit though.

i'm a bit surprised that pentecost hasn't been moved from lansing this season

He can't take an Aeroplane; too dangerous for him.

When is he expected back?

 

From the surgery date, probably anywhere from 2-3 weeks depending on if it ruptured or not first.
