This is a really great deal for a player who could very well be a productive semi-starter next year and the cog of an effective DH rotation this year. Plus the bonus of still being more or less as financially flexible as the team would be otherwise. Really, really well done by the FO.

Upton doesn't suck, he's just an overpaid league average player who was terrible for two years. On the open market he'd probably command around $8M on a one year deal.

If Upton just destroys the Orioles I would be thrilled because it seems like the Padres preferred them as a trade partner.

Great deal. Upton was worth $12 mil last year and another $12 this year. At a 1.5 year deal for $5 mil that's probably one of the best contracts in baseball.

This is a really nice addition to have made before the offseason. The 2017 OF is Pillar and then nothing. Nice to get a second MLB quality OF in the fold, especially for 5M or whatever.

Eh I think you were making some good points when we all thought that we'd have to pay Upton 12 million or so next season. But at 5 million for a season and a half? That changes the dynamics a lot.
