Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Board consensus IIRC: 2014-15: Stroman is ace. The second that people admit he's been disappointing this year, he pitches better. 2014-15: Sanchez is dogshit. Reliever or back end starter at best. (Yeah ok JimCanuck, we know) Early 2016: Tulowitzki is done, what an albatross of a contract Early 2016: Martin - see above Several year ago: Travis Snider is a future HOFer, it's all Cito's fault he sucks right now. Mid-May after Rays beating and before heading to Minnesota: This team is s***, time to think about selling off everything they can. June: Smoak's been a useful contributor, I wonder if the Jays are able to extend him at a reasonable contract. The opinion expressed here over the past few pages gives me hope that everything will be just fine going forward with Smoak
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 do you think the Jays will pick up Smoaky's $6M option for 2019?
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 I'd give my left arm just to have a guy like a healthy David Cooper out there. That's pretty extreme.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 do you think the Jays will pick up Smoaky's $6M option for 2019? Won't that depend on 2017 and 2018 first?
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Won't that depend on 2017 and 2018 first? yes, of course. i'm asking to look inside your crystal ball.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Smoak has never had a 1-win season in six years. The quality of his presence on the team seems to simply be how many of his caveman swings actually connect over ~300 PAs. But even in an up year he's barely worth it.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Can we not care about Smoak, what's done is done. He's just a bench piece.
puphood Verified Member Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Blue Jay's Smoak memorabilia signed prints on sale on lime 20% off...pretty optimistic sellers

Gibby says Smoak is starting on first, things can change but I think you need to go to a optometrist not a optimist with that kind of insight..........
Ray Verified Member Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 First basemen we could've gotten this offseason for cheaper (or just slightly more) rather than Justin Smoak: Brandon Moss ($6 million) Chris Carter ($3.5 million) Pedro Alvarez (N/A) Adam Lind (Minor League Deal) Mitch Moreland ($5.5 million) Justin Morneau (N/A) Logan Morrison ($2.5 million) Trevor Plouffe ($5.25 million) Sean Rodriguez ($5.75 million) Eric Thames ($5 million) Dae Ho Lee ($2 million) Not counting the plethora of relievesr who would've cost about the same if not slightly more than Smoak, but would've provided a lot more value out of the pen than he would outta first base.

At least we got Pearce for $6.25m x2 years, who will hopefully be the full time 1B by the end of the first month of the season.

Geezus, Steamer is projecting a 124 wRC+ for Eric Thames. That was a hell of a signing.

Oh yeah I agree, their prediction isn't worth much. I still think it's a good signing though. Really low AAV yet they got him locked in for 3 years. If he really does hit like that he provides surplus value in year 1 of the deal. At worst he's probably still a fine bench bat.

I wouldn't say the prediction wasn't worth much. Steamer projected him to be well above average hitter and so far he's been that and then some. I don't see a bench bat anywhere in the near future with that 17.2% BB rate! I was hoping to see him steal 20 or more, but that doesn't look like it's happenning.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 All quiet on the 'why did we sign Smoak to a 2-year contract?' front.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 Guy has a 92 wRC+ and his only position is an average 1B. I really wish he wasn't signed for next year. Idiot
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 Lol I loved checking in on this thread and seeing all the AA-hating, Shapiro-fellating fanboys recoiling in disgust. f***ing stooge
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 Smoak can easily be benched or traded or whatever at that salary. It's what the Rays gave LoMo. It's the going rate for a platoon 1B. Doesn't block anybody or impede any future moves. Reasonable post. Funny that you mentioned LoMo and they are both having breakout seasons.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 Fire Shapiro thread Leave the board forever
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 http://i.imgur.com/9iwMPyg.png This is not sexy. I don't see the hurry to extend Smoak at all. Stupid move imo Projections have him at ~95 wRC+. I don't really understand the desire to have that taking up space for the next two years. Fire Shapiro thread 1B with average bat is the new market inefficiency. Goodbye Edwin, and welcome draft pick. We gonna eat dick without Edwin. :-( Shapiro is better than us
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 This is a good deal if he pans out--I mean, despite the low average and K issues, he's also getting on base a lot (.333 OBP). Many teams would've likely offered him quite a bit of money in this awful free agent market lacking in depth.. Next up, the Jays need to lock up Saunders and one of EE/Bautista. he got $3.90m this year. he gets a very minor raise to $4.25m the next 2 seasons. i dont read to much into projecting a bigger role for him, just that they really like him in the role he has now and dont want to mess with it. i do agree why pay smoak now when you can just play it by ear and no doubt get the same deal later on? I like the deal. 4.25 m is nothing nowadays. They clearly value his power potential. He values 1 war at 9m. I think he believes in smock and bought low by doing it now. Meh, not a big deal, but the timing is odd. Smoak is going to be paid like a part time player and the Jays have 12 free agents this upcoming offseason. It's about covering their ass. Shut the f*** up. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush, bud. Would anyone have been surprised if Smoak got 2/7M? Paid an extra 1.5M to get it done in season and to get an option year in 2019. It's not a sexy move by any means but it keeps guys like Jesus Montero out of the Rogers Centre. You guys don't get nothing. Board consensus IIRC: 2014-15: Stroman is ace.
