A throwing error by Junior Lake was enough to bring home the go-ahead run for the Durham Bulls to take Wednesday night's game, 3-2, over the Buffalo Bisons at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

With two out in the bottom of the eighth, Richie Shaffer reached first base on a weak fly into shallow right field. Nick Franklin followed up with a bullet to the wall in right for a routine double which had Shaffer initially hold his ground at third.

However, Lake's hurried throw to the infield overshot the cut-off man, Alexi Casilla, which allowed Shaffer to scamper home for the winning tally as the ball bounced to the middle of the infield.

The Bisons managed to get Casilla in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but pinch-hitter Darrell Ceciliani, fresh off of the disabled list, struck out to end the game.

Scott Diamond again pitched well without much run support. The Guelph, Ont. native had only 10 total runs of offense to work with in his previous six starts.

The lean lefty took a no-hitter into the fifth, but a leadoff double by Dayron Varona ended any thoughts about a potential no-no.

That was the start of a four-hit frame for the Bulls in which they scored two runs.

With one out and Varona at second, Kyle Roller popped a ball high into the air at short which Shane Opitz, in his first start at shortstop for the Herd, lost in the twilight sky, allowing Roller to reach on the gift single. Jaff Decker then plated Varona with a ground ball into center. A soft liner for a base hit into left field off of the bat of Daniel Robertson brought home Roller from third.

The inning ended on a diving grab and throw by gold-glover Matt Dominguez, one of his five putouts of the night.

Diamond ended up throwing six complete innings and was charged with a pair of runs while fanning four batters.

Bulls' fire-baller Jaime Shultz came into Wednesday's contest having given up just one earned run over his last three starts. The 24-year-old Rays prospect struggled with his control early, walking three of the first seven batters he faced. Shultz eventually found his comfort zone, finishing with four walks and seven strikeouts while allowing one run.

The lone score off of Shultz came in the sixth. Domonic Brown walked and made his way to third on a Jesus Montero double. Brown then touched home as Casey Kotchman grounded out to short a batter later.

The Bisons made for some late drama when they tied the game at twos in the top of the eighth inning. Dalton Pompey started the frame with a line-drive double into the right field corner. Buffalo's centerfielder eventually came home on a sac fly by Montero.

Pompey was the Herd's top offensive threat Wednesday night, going 2-for-3 with a walk, upping his average to .250.

BISONS NOTES:

Earlier in the day, the Bisons activated outfielder Darrell Ceciliani and Pat McCoy from the DL…Pitcher Arnold Leon was placed on the temporarily inactive list…Shane Opitz made his Triple-A debut and went 0-for-3…Jesus Montero tied Domonic Brown for the team lead with his 17th RBI…Chad Jenkins took the tough-luck loss, moving his record to 2-1.

Portland (10-23) opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, using three singles to plate a run off Fisher Cats starter Shane Dawson. Ryan Court beat out an infield single, advanced on a single by Jake Romanski. He scored on a single by Tim Roberson to make it 1-0.

Dawson allowed just the one run in five innings. He allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out three.

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Derek Campbell doubled twice as part of a seven-run fifth inning, and the Clearwater Threshers hung on to top the Dunedin Blue Jays 9-7 on Wednesday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Campbell finished 3-for-4 out of the nine-spot, with a pair of two-base hits, a run, and two RBI's. Carlos Tocci knocked in two runs as well with RBI singles in the third and fifth innings.

The Threshers (21-11) took the lead in the third, when Gabriel Lino unloaded on a 2-0 offering and crushed his first home run of the season to left.

Two outs later, Cord Sandberg walked and stole second, and Tocci knocked him in with a single to left-center to make it 2-0.

Up 2-1 in the fifth, Clearwater hung a seven-spot against starter Brad Allen (3-1).

Campbell got the wheels turning by smacking a double off the left-centerfield wall. Malquin Canelo reached on a bunt single, and took off for second on a 3-2 pitch to Sandberg. The offering missed, but catcher Mike Reeves threw down to second and the ball squirted through to the outfield, allowing Campbell to score on the error.

Tocci followed with a single up the middle to bring home Canelo and make it 4-1. Following a flyout and a fielder's choice, after which Dunedin manager Ken Huckaby was ejected for arguing that Sandberg was out of the base path, Andrew Pullin walked with the bases loaded to earn his first RBI of the season.

Zach Green kept the rally going, delivering a single to center to score two. With two outs, Campbell brought two more runs across with a double down the third base line, putting Clearwater ahead 9-1.

Dunedin (14-18) did not go down easily.

The Blue Jays rallied for three runs in the fifth, and closed the gap with three more in the sixth inning. Dunedin had the tying run aboard with two outs, before Ulises Joaquin struck out Richard Urena to end the inning.

Joely Rodriguez earned his second save in a Threshers uniform, hurling a perfect ninth. Rodriguez has not allowed a run in six appearances with the Threshers.

Clearwater will go for the series win on Thursday on Taps and Tacos Night at Bright House Field, presented by Tijuana Flats. Matt Imhof (3-1) takes the hill for the Threshers, opposed by Francisco Rios (0-0). First pitch is at 7 p.m., and the game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Henry Centeno tossed seven two-hit shutout innings and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (19-14) completed a three-game sweep of the Lansing Lugnuts (16-14), 6-1, in a Wednesday day game at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Bowling Green broke the game open with a five-run third inning against Lugnuts starter Tayler Saucedo (Loss, 1-4), sparked by a Zacrey Law home run and capped by a Manny Sanchez two-run single.

Saucedo lasted 2 2/3 innings in his return to the rotation, allowing six hits and five runs, walking one and striking out three.

Centeno (Win, 4-0) took care of the rest, allowing only a Justin Atkinson opposite-field single and a Connor Panas bunt single, striking out seven, and lowering his ERA to a Midwest League-leading 0.77.

Bowling Green knuckleballer Taylor Hawkins pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

The Lugnuts ruined the shutout bid in the ninth against Tyler Brashears, thanks to an Andrew Guillotte double, a Gunnar Heidt single and a Ryan Hissey sacrifice fly.

Lansing received 3 1/3 innings of relief from Starlyn Suriel, who allowed one run on two hits while striking out three.

Dan Lietz fired the seventh and eighth innings in perfect fashion.

The Lugnuts look to halt their four-game losing streak on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday Gone Wild: WrestleMania featuring an appearance from wrestling superstar Rhino, plus $2 beers and half-off craft brews. Game time is 7:05 p.m., the opener of a four-game series against the South Bend Cubs, with 2015 first-rounder Jon Harris on the mound. Need to mention Cardona.... chance to be a shutdown reliever

For a guy with his stuff one would hope for more strikeouts though

2K in his inning of relief yesterday, got to be considered baby steps for him right now

Man, Pompey has a great stance.

I think it's a horrible swing. Same as Tulo right now. Hands up, Down, etc. Too much work to get them into the right hitting position.

His stance looks a lot like Carl Crawford, but his swing has a lot more moving parts to it.

Maybe if he can continue to get Ks going forward. Noneoftheless, just getting through the season healthy without any injuries would probably be win for him.

stance ≠ swing
