The reigning American League MVP believes his team’s non-existent offence in the two losses is as much a product of what the Blue Jays weren’t doing in the batter’s box as much as it is what the White Sox were doing on the mound.

“One hundred per cent, 100 per cent,” Donaldson, 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, said in an interview with sportsnet.ca after Thursday’s 4-0 loss. “I feel like we need to do a better job of being good hitters.”

He also added: “We need to re-evaluate some things and hopefully an off-day does us some good [Thursday].”

“I think some people need to evaluate their approach,” he said. “Chris Sale is Chris Sale, but we have a lot of big-time right-handed bats in this lineup that should be able to handle Quintana. He’s had a good start to the season so far, but it looked to me like he was throwing a lot of heaters, and I don’t believe there’s anybody who should be able to come through here and throw a lot of fastballs and have the kind of success he had against us.”

The Blue Jays offence looked to have turned the corner after scoring 20 runs while taking two of three from the Oakland Athletics over the weekend, but then the surging White Sox, leading the American League at 16-6, put them right back into a funk.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Donaldson. “At some point you’ve got to tip your cap to the other team, they’re doing a good job of pitching, but I’m a big believer in this team and there shouldn’t be a left-handed pitcher, especially two of them on back-to-back days, to come in here and pitch the way they did.”

“We’ve got to do a better job on the bases,” said Donaldson. “It’s too late in the season [for mistakes to be happening].”

Still, the Blue Jays are built around their offence, and they need the bats to drive the bus. The schedule offers no let-up, as lined up for the Rays this weekend are Drew Smyly, Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi.

“We’re going to be challenged again, right away,” said Donaldson. “And hopefully we come back from the off-day fresh, ready to go, just up there competing. I want to see guys up there competing and doing everything they can to help the team be successful.”

I was pretty shocked that Quintana was continuously able to blow 93 MPH fastballs right by Edwin and Jose last night. Also throwing that curve for strike one almost every at bat and nobody was swinging at it.

Really disappointed in the offense last night.

Hoping they can win a couple against the Rays this weekend, pitching is gonna be pretty tough

Good. Let's see how this works. The two things he talked about can be applied to Tulo easily. Maybe now he'll stop taking meatballs and being a bonehead on the bases

He's the MVP. He can say whatever he wants. JD is a rock hard stud.

Yeah he has star player privileges. That much isn't in doubt. Heck, given everyone's contract situations, he pretty much IS the franchise.

Why don't they consider moving Tulo in the two spot and move everyone else down. See if that will jump start him

Don't mess with JD in the two spot. I'd be okay with Tulo in the third spot, but Bautista would cry.

Yep, sure would be nice to lock him up longer term.

I was in HOU 2015 for 4 gms there we lost mid May and it seemed very bleak at that time. I am suprised that this team, which is better, is in this sustained rut. I don't think Shapiro will be making any big moves to bolster it. Really hoping that as pro ball players they get their collective s*** together soon to right this thing. The AL East title defense is still there for them.

It's a good thing JD is here to point out publicly that some guys are struggling. They might not have realized it otherwise. I'm sure they'll immediately take corrective action.

Exactly, next game Tulo and Martin will each go 3/4 and the BP won't let any inherited runners score.

He may need to hold their hands and help them safely cross the street, as well.

These comments encompasses several elements.

-Tulo can't hit meatballs

-Martin can't hit anything

-Edwin K and pop

-Pillar walk rate

-Smoak swing-miss and pop

I don't think Donaldson refers to Goins, because he knows very well the Goins' offensive limitation.

Did you see EE's hustle down to first on that slow grounder between 3rd and short last night? Gave zero s***.

He didn't name names, he didn't call anybody out. He is the vocal leader of this team, when the media asks him a pointed question, he gives a candid but respectful answer. I don't think anything he said was disrespectful to any of his peers. More importantly, he leads by example.

I've never seen Edwin even try to leg out a hit

Edwin is a much better baserunner than you guys are giving him credit for. Ortiz' BSR is routinely between -4 and -9, Edwin is usually in the neutral range. I don't want him blowing out a quad trying to leg out an infield single on a routine ground ball.

1st to 3rd base with a single.

He does that a lot. He's actually a smart baserunner and aggressive relative to his speed. He knows his limitations and he knows which OFers he can run on. He ran on Eaton the other day and it didn't work out, but I think it was a reasonable decision given Eaton's arm and the way the ball was put in play. If a throw is perfect, you tip your cap. Edwin is by no means a liability on the bases.

I remember him blowing out a hammy once after crossing the bag trying to leg one out.
