baseballsss Verified Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Why does everyone want Goins down? Isn't he useful as a late defensive switch and backup SS if Tulo goes down. Isn't this basically what his career profiles as?

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Late game defensive switch for Travis? does Barney play SS? SSS but Travis has done nothing to show he needs be replaced late in a game for his defence.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 SSS but Travis has done nothing to show he needs be replaced late in a game for his defence. Yeah I'm not convinced that Goins would actually be an improvement.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Barney can play SS, though it's been a while since he's done it often. I'm not a big Parades fan, but he's probably the better option short term over Goins. Keeps depth in case of further injury without losing an out of option "asset". I was just looking at Travis's MiLB numbers, guy had like 165 wRC+ in 2013. If you don't care about sample sizes 2015 was his second worst professional season offensively. Stupid f***ing mobile. I meant to say that there needs to be context taken with the numbers of course and not to assume that he's of course going to repeat anything similar to last season.

But a 135 RC+ at the MLB level is >>>>> 160 RC+ at any MiLB level, no?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 When a runner trying to steal (and they were all waiting for that) breaks early I should f***ing hope Goins would cover and yell for the ball. Am I the only one who chuckled at this statement? It'd be like Charlie Brown out there. I can imagine Goins sitting on the ground after taking a flip with his cap and shoes fallen off to the side.

I can imagine Goins sitting on the ground after taking a flip with his cap and shoes fallen off to the side. Everyone assumes that the play is automatic. Obviously the runner didn't think so and that is why he tried to steal. What happens with poorly executing teams is that the pitcher throws home, or the pitcher makes a good throw to 2nd and the 2nd baseman isn't there in time or misses the throw, or the pitcher throws wildly into center filed. You must be a very casual fan to think routine looking plays always work out well, especially the way the Blue Jays are playing. I have seen runners steal 2nd on that type of play many times, and many balls thrown into center field.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Comes in as a defensive replacement in extras. Ball hit to his right. Not an easy chance but one he has to make, given he has nothing but a glove. He cant make it. We were fortunate Biagini got him at 2B. So done with this Goins. I always wonder what the downgrade is when a player comes off the bench late in the game for defense is vs. his normal self. He should have still made the play but I understand it would be a lot more difficult than had he played the whole game.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Does he provide more value than Travis? Sorrow Verified Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Since 2013, when Goins debuted, and players with 850 PA or greater Goins is the worst hitter in baseball by 6%. 6% worse than Middlebrooks, Amarista as examples. 60 wRC+. I'm really hoping that Atkins and Shapiro can get Gibbons to stop using him at all. Let him get sent to AAA.

nextyear Verified Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Maybe Ryan Goins has a learning disability that prevents him from learning to swing a bat properly. Or perhaps he is so over-confident that he won't listen to batting coaches. Probably it is the second alternative, so good bye Ryan Goins, you had your chance ... All you had to do was watch how Darwin Barney (and every other player on the team) hits a baseball.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Come out of the closet Ryan, we know Can't swing a stick, but sure can handle dem balls and get to them quick and deep in the Hole! We know, the truth is out there! Lol

He's never hit well in his career so its not like he can just try harder and bam hes a good hitter.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Here is a fangraphs story on Goins from happier times....the 2015 2 ish months of his entire career where he was relatively useful offensively. They are trying to figure out why he could do it.....appears it was a mirage. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/ryan-goins-is-the-new-reason-well-never-understand-baseball/

Nafro Verified Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 As long as Ryan Goins gets significant playing time, this team will lose more than it wins.

nextyear Verified Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Any guesses on when Goins gets sent down and Travis called up. My guess is Tuesday, May 24th in New York. (actually it might happen after tomorrow's game, since both Toronto and Buffalo are off on Monday). Devon Travis was at 2nd base today in Buffalo and got a double and base on ball - http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2016_05_21_pawaaa_bufaaa_1&t=g_box&sid=milb I have to admit, Ryan Goins really does suck at the plate and may see little time in the MLB in the future.
nextyear Verified Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Goins seems to be a slap hitter. I just wonder why anyone would want to hit that way. Hockey players can be taught to power skate, why can't Goins be taught to swing a bat properly. Seriously, I don't think this is a matter of lack of talent but lack of IQ. Here is how Bautista hits, and even Darwin Barney seems to have a similar approach; they both get their whole body into the swing. Goins seems to mainly use his arms to slap the ball (and does it poorly).

Goins has a beautiful swing, but he can't hit anything with it and can't aim his bat very well. He might be better to try slap hitting.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Hopefully Goins is sent down when Travis is back up, and the Jays keep Barney around.

I'm all for Travis being called up sooner rather than later, but he'll have to improve on his one error per game average when he gets here. Edit.. I thought i read he had 5 errors in the minors so far, when in fact he has 2. Sorry..
