BTS Community Moderator Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 He's contributed -0.5 fWAR this year, and projections have him below replacement level. Exiting his prime years and has thus far accumulated a paltry 0.8 fWAR in 248 career games. Was the hive right, or can Ryan Goins stick? Discuss amongst yourselves.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 He's fine as a defensive replacement and backup infielder. Obviously, over a larger sample, he has been exposed. He can't hit, and if you ever convinced yourself that he could, you were lying to yourself.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 His ceiling is Darwin Barney. That's if he reaches every bit of potential he has.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 The projections have him no better than Barney or Alex Casilla who is in Buffalo. No better than a seldom used backup.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Gibby thinks he should platoon him with Travis. Lool loool
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 He's the shittliest player on the team, but he has more swagger than anyone. I like how he's too good to run out ground balls that look like they'll probably be outs.
flafson Verified Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Not sure I understand all the sudden hate, he's had some bad luck lately. Lots of his outs been hard hits, just nothing fell through for a base hit. Do I think he's the next Robinson Cano? No. Do I think he's better than wRC+ of 12? Yes. I think his ceiling is 80-90 wRC+ which should be more than enough to keep him with his defense.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 By all rights, he should be optioned when Travis comes back but on a team where clubhouse seniority seems to drive decisions more than strategy, he probably stays.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 It doesn't matter. A full rebuild could be in effect very soon
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Worst thing is that the defense has been non-existent this year. He looks like an average infielder at best so far.

I can't see him hitting above the Mendoza line again and you are talking about being almost replacement level

flafson Verified Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Just below league average with the bat and elite defense is pretty good IMO.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 What does Howarth have to say?
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Just below league average with the bat and elite defense is pretty good IMO. Has Goins actually been elite on D or just a bit above average? His bat is also not just below league average, it's well below at the best of times.

BTS Community Moderator Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 Just below league average with the bat and elite defense is pretty good IMO. Yes. But that's not Goins. He's like 40% below league average with the bat and not an elite defender.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Yes. But that's not Goins. He's like 40% below league average with the bat and not an elite defender. Last year Goins got 84 wRC+, but his ceiling is between 60-70 ala Pokey Reese, Chris Getz, Eric Sogard, Enrique Wilson
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 2015 he had a 9% BB rate in 400 PAs. That became a huge part of whatever offensive value he had. Its like he forget that and same as Pillar now thinks he is a good hitter - chasing a ton out balls out of the zone. Combine that with a pretty avg mitt 2016 and it screams one word..."Devon"
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I remember people on the board last year wondering if he would be better at SS for the Jays long term than Tulo lol. Thinking he was a 2 Win player at SS.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 He is a good bench player. Are you guanhundrepercent sure? Goins defense don't look elite than past years.
43211234 Verified Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 He sucks and he's bald. When is Travis back?
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Where is this elite defense? He's clearly not elite. At best he's above average at second and average at short.
flafson Verified Member Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 His defense looks pretty good to me, what are you guys basing your claims that his defense is no where near 2015?
