THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 If his post-game doesn't address that he needs to change his approach, he'll never wise up.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 He needs to go to Triple-A and make the adjustment back to a strikeout pitcher.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 He'll be fine. Just needs to get the pitch to contact crap out of his head. It's a phase he's going thru....
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 The strange thing is that some people will take an outing like today's (5.1, 5K's, 11H, 7R) over 8 innings and 3 K's, 5H, and 1R.

Obviously the second is better for that game, but its a worse sign for the future as the first is indicitvie of a better future performance.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 (edited) Becoming very frustrating to watch this kid with all the talent he has not make adjustments. The league is only looking down and mostly away on him now, and they are laying off the incessant nibbling. 3.76 xFIP isn't what he could produce with his stuff. His GB% is dropping as hitters lay off and make him bring the ball up. Yesterday he got tattooed. It just seems that in almost every game....BB, dribbler and a couple well hit balls are leading to big innings against him leaving runners on, or the pen when he is pulled. Even the outs were hard yesterday. He just cant get the K's to finish guys off and he has a .290 BABIP against him. Id like to see him lead the league in something other than IP. We already have one back end "innings eater". Edited May 29, 2016 by BigCecil

He just used all his pitches well and worked all 4 quadrants.

baloojayz Verified Member Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Between the pitching coach and Martin, I think they need to simplify things and take the 2sm out for a bit. Just 4sm curve/change for 3 games, that should set him straight. Then mix in 2sm as the strikeout pitch ONLY after 3 games.

First of all a 2 seam is not a strikeout pitch and why would you make him a 4s/curve/change pitcher when he barely throws all 3 of those pitches 25% of the time combined. If anything he should scrap the changeup and throw less cutters as those 2 pitches have been terrible for him.

If anything he should scrap the changeup and throw less cutters as those 2 pitches have been terrible for him. I feel the reason he struggles (when he struggles) is he doesn't pitch well fundamentally (for a front end starter). He has too many tools and can't really use any of them reliably. Cutting out the cutter (for now) and 2 seam would be a huge change, but that is what he needs. Dotting corners with the 4 seam, curve/change/sinker---keep things simple for a bit. It makes no sense to look at his current pitch distribution and batting average against those pitch types when what he's doing now isn't working in the first place. Marcus Stroman's 2 seam can be very effective in strikeout counts. Currently he doesn't set it up properly. You watch his 2014 montage, that's all 2seam changeup Offspeed pitches become useless when you can't locate with your 4sm fastball. Same thing with the cutter. Basically more 4seam usage plz I know 2sm is not a strikeout pitch, I intended to say save it for a strikeout count. Edited May 30, 2016 by baloojayz

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 What's the prediction for tomorrow? If he continues the same approach, then.. 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 2 BB

If he continues the same approach, then.. 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 2 BB It's not so much his approach as its the quality of pitches in his last game. He hasn't been able to locate the 2 seamers at all and once behind in the count has to throw it over the plate. If he isn't locating the 2 seam he needs to use the 4 seam and more offspeed...he has to adapt.

His stuff is far too good to be doing that crap. He also doesn't have the pin-point control to paint the lower corners with 2SM all day like he tries to, and even when he does, the predictability of his pitches allow hitters to get on him quick.

Yeah, the 0-2 fastballs seem like they are due to lack of confidence in the offspeed. Once he gains those pitches I think the K's will increase some again. But until then he needs to change his approach.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Really bad feeling for the Stroshow today, Unless he comes with a different game plan, we will need 10 runs to win this game. These are really good fast ball hitters, they wont miss many of those 2 seam meatballs.

If he continues the same approach, then.. 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 2 BB He had this same "approach" during a few starts where he struck out 8 and 9 batters. You fail to realize throwing a few extra 4 seamers isn't going to make him into this ace all of a sudden. His offspeed pitches have been inconsistent and command of the fastball is the real reason he has been struggling.
