Cyborg Verified Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 The Rays LHH suck a big bag of dicks though. Dont you talk about Corey Dickerson like that.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Rays lineup was mostly LHB as well. Actually, he faced just over 79% lefties tonight, and against the Rays he faced lefties 54% of the time and as mentioned, the Yankee lefties are much better than the Rays lefties. Sanchez faced one of the toughest lineups for him that he will face all year. Even 7 swinging strikes is a 7.2% swinging strike rate against a lineup terribly disproportionate to what he will face on a regular basis. That 7.2% is higher than what he had the previous 2 years! He probably should have had 3 swinging strikes facing such a high percentage of lefties. Trying to analyze and project stats off 97 pitches is indeed stupid, but NJH started it. Just the eye test, Sanchez didn't have the comeback 2 seamer that hit the inside corner against lefties that I saw in spring training. He wasn't as sharp as he was in spring or last outing, but he still made a lot of quality pitches, but he missed a bit more than in his previous couple outings. Sanchez, not at his best and pitching against a quality tough lefty loaded lineup, getting the results he did tonight is pretty encouraging. He walked 3 fighting the ump, but he still struck out 5 in 6 innings. I'll take that and look forward to his next start.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 That's not entirely fair when the ump had a strike zone you couldn't s*** through if you forced your butt against it for the first half of the game. you can't exactly pitch to the edge when the ump is an imbecile. Sanchez wasn't getting close calls because Martin had to reach across the zone for most of them. Guys never get close calls when the catcher has to do that. If he was hitting his spots, he got most of the calls.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Sanchie greatly under-utilized the change today. Only threw 7 of them and got 2 whiffs. Swing rate on curves was pretty bad too. No idea why he was using it over the change. I was surprised he even threw 7, I barely remember him throwing it. Maybe he just didn't have the feel for it warming up.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Wait, it was the umpire and Martin'a fault that he was effectively wild??
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Wait, it was the umpire and Martin'a fault that he was effectively wild?? He definitely was wild, but the ump was also very inconsistent for both the Yankees and the jays. It was very telling when martin bitches hard to the ump and the next two pitches thrown were called strikes even though they were basically catching the same part of the plate as the previous two pitches. I was opposed to robo strike zone not to long ago, but when I see inconsistent s*** bag umps heavily influence games like this one it really sways the needle in favor of it.

He hit martin right in the glove at the top of the zone and on the corner and martin turned to the ump and said that was a strike. Zaun replayed those throws and said those were strikes. You need to go so a counselor, you have a problem. You are a Sanchez hater. You were posting in this thread in the second inning of the game. You couldn't wait to tell everyone what a terrible pitcher Sanchez was. I equally need some counselling for my Sanchez fetish, but not as much as Jim's 24-7 Sanchez boner. Let the kid pitch 50+ innings and we'll have a bit better understanding of where we are at. Even good pitchers have bad outings occasionally.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I'm actually really happy reading Sanchez's comments after the game. He could've talked about how it was a good start, but he felt he could have improved a lot http://bluejaysnation.com/2016/4/13/aaron-sanchez-passes-a-big-test-against-the-yankees-even-if-he-doesn-t-believe-it

Hitters dont chase it out of zone.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Sanchez has been the bright spot on the team so far this season. I hoped he would improve this year but never thought he would be this good this early. Can't wait to see how he does against RedSox and Orioles.

It's not because the ump hates Sanchez, it's because he's missing his spots. Look what happened to Kershaw the other day. The umps are definitely not out to get the best pitcher in the league, yet this happened: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/kershaw-pence.png http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/kershaw-pence-2.png As soon as the catcher has to reach across one way or the other, there's a huge chance you're not getting the call, no matter who you are.

Really good example. Players know it too; they don't really expect to get calls when they miss that bad. Anybody who doesn't realize this is probably just new to watching baseball (or stupid). In related opinions - roboumps plz.
JaysFan75 Verified Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Sanchez past and SSS present. BABIP luck
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 BABIP luck He might control a little of that. Obviously the sample is small but he's had a low BABIP in the 2 previous seasons and even in the minors had a below average BABIP. His Hard hit % is very low which I think help explains it. Now he isn't going to have a BABIP in the low .200s but around .280 isn't unrealistic.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I understand some need to find negatives. On the positive side, an effective changeup is under development, there is cutter, even a slider has been seen apparently. Control is improving but needs work. And he's 23 yrs old, a little older than Jon Harris. He's clearly an SP, and good chance a future ace.

Seeing him this year has maybe bumped his ultimate ceiling to #2 with more likely outcome being a decent 3. He sill has lightyears to go on improved command before that's even realistic let alone the ace tag.
Stoneyen Verified Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 There's really two interesting and potentially promising developments going on here with Sanchez. One is the potential improvement of his command, which would obviously lower the terribly high walk rate he's always had. The first start I thought was the best I've ever seen his command, but yesterday wasn't nearly as good. The second is the potential improvement of his off speed pitches. We saw the devastating change up in the first start and a couple nice curves (with different movement, I wonder if he purposely is trying to change his curve..). This would effect his K rate more than walk rate. Ideal scenario would be BB go down, K go up, but with his GB tendency we really only need to see one or the other to have a serviceable starter. Overall I'd say I'm definitely optimistically intrigued by what I've seen in ST and in the 2 starts and can see a glimmer of the huge potential he has if both continue to improve.
