Travis to Bluefield has to be nothing more than some sort of roster manipulation?

 

I just looked into this and it seems Bluefield's season ends tonight, so Travis will be "called up" for tomorrow's game. Nothing changes at all, except Thole is eligible to continue playing for one more month. Just a favorably scheduled off-day given the circumstances.

But it's September, why does he have to go down at all?

Was listening to the game on the radio yesterday. Travis did something productive and they said something along the lines of "That's great production from your number 9 hitter." No s***? The problem is most managers aren't stupid enough to put one of your best hitters in the 9 hole.

Not really, just trying to understand the mechanics is all. Intentional Wok gave a helpful answer.

 

With today's off day and Bluefield's season ending tonight Travis won't even miss a game.

I think I read where is wRC+ would be highest of any qualified hitter on numerous teams, including the Yankees.

 

And if Gibby likes Bautista in the leadoff spot I'm ok with that but why on earth bat Pillar, Upton, Navarro, etc. at 7 and 8 with Travis batting 9th? That should be a no-brainer.

Good point. Maybe something to do with the 40 man?

 

Edit: according to MLBTR apperently the signing and demotion happened last night so Thole is ELDGIBLE for the post season.. Great

Not thrilled with Thole being on the postseason roster but if Martin gets hurt I'm assuming they'd want a backup who is familiar with the staff. Or if we had some injuries to the rotation and Dickey needed to pitch perhaps they'd take Thole instead of Navarro for the backup spot (or even just carry both).

 

So as much as I hate the idea of Thole playing in the playoffs it's probably smart to do it this way.

Zero chance Thole cracks the playoff roster. I would be extremely surprised if Dickey was even included so i don't think we need to worry about this.

 

Yeah

 

Bench will likely be Navarro, Barney, Carrera or Pompey and whichever of Upton/Smoak isn't starting

 

If Dickey is also off the roster you can add one more BP arm or bench player but there would be no need for it to be Thole

okay will then yea that explains things.

 

I'd much rather Thole be eligible than not for some insurance.

He can be very useful... just like he was last postseason. It's almost too bad he won't be postseason eligible but I believe it was to save an option year on him.

They still only had 25 spots as of last night when they had to do this

Postseason Eligibility

 

Definition

Per Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, players must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for postseason play.

 

Players must be on the 40-man roster, the 60-day disabled list or the bereavement/family medical emergency list as of midnight ET on Aug. 31 to be eligible for their respective clubs' postseason rosters. Consequently, players that are acquired via September trades or signed as free agents in September are ineligible for postseason play.
