Yeah definitely. Can you imagine the reaction in here if Thole was named the new starting catcher?

Yeah definitely. Can you imagine the reaction in here if Thole was named the new starting catcher? In Thole's defense, both he and Navarro are about equally as useless. Both are below-replacement levels players who project to play as exactly replacement level players. Neither hits well, Navarro projects a bit better there, and neither are particularly good defensive catchers, while Navarro is an abysmal framer which hurts his value.

This is EXACTLY why he was acquired. Maybe there was some discussions behind the scenes about Martin having some nagging injuries at this point of the season, and the front office knew if he needed any extended time off, that the man from Breese, Illinois (which is where I was last night), Josh Thole, would not be someone they would want to give regular playing time in September or even the postseason. And the fact that Navarro has a familiarity with some of the pitching staff and the rest of the team is a bonus!

puphood Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Is Joe Biagini a guy you consider for a possible starters role in the future? Or is he just a really lucky/and or good reliever that would be exposed as a starter? Starter book it......

puphood Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Martin will get 2 days off and maybe get a matching knee brace like Bautista's. I didn't think this division could get much tighter but it seriously could go to the wire with 4 teams......
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Starters for the weekend aeries vs Red Sox: Estrada vs Porcello Happ vs Rodriguez Sanchez vs Buccholz Wow Buchholz starting again. He's been flip flopped from starter/reliever so many times this year and it's crazy that he's been better starting with f***ed up rest.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 And the fact that Navarro has a familiarity with some of the pitching staff and the rest of the team is a bonus! I wouldn't say it's a bonus. I'd say it's his main source of value at this point. Despite what Gibby might think, he's not even an average hitter at this point and he was never a good receiver.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Starters for the weekend series vs Red Sox: Estrada vs Porcello Happ vs Rodriguez Sanchez vs Buccholz Going to be in tough. All 3 of their SP's have been throwing the ball pretty well. Time to cowboy up Jays!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Navarro sucks, but he sucks a lot less than Thole. That's really the only benefit. Martin better be healthy.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Going to be in tough. All 3 of their SP's have been throwing the ball pretty well. Time to cowboy up Jays! To be fair, Jays pitchers have been throwing well too they just haven't been getting the run support.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Jays have 16 games left against the ALE and 13 of them are at home. Hopefully that's a good thing but with this offense who the hell knows.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 To be fair, Jays pitchers have been throwing well too they just haven't been getting the run support. The last 5 starts or so Happ and Estrada haven't really been throwing the ball well. Estrada had one good start mixed in there, but Happ is really struggling.

Governator Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Yeah I'm more than a little worried about Martin You could totally tell he wanted to give it 150% and he was mad/frustrated as hell.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 A day off today is most definitely a good thing
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Looks like Martin could be fine on defense but I don't know how he could swing the bat if the knee injury is serious.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 To be fair, Jays pitchers have been throwing well too they just haven't been getting the run support. Some of that might have to do with fatigue. Estrada is already at his usual full season of workload (minus last year) and with a bad back I'm sure he's fighting through a lot. Happ's at 164IP, the most he's ever done is 172 last year. It's quite possible these guys are simply running out of steam late in the season, they are both 33 and don't come with 10 years of 175IP type seasons.
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 If the Jays don't win 2 games vs Boston this series the season is over. I'm usually not too pessimistic but the Jays have been s*** lately.

For reference, Happ is roughly 300 pitches thrown below last year's total and Estrada is roughly 850 pitches below.

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 You do realize the Jays would still be in position for the playoffs if they lose 2/3 games this weekend, right? AL East or bust dude.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 For reference, Happ is roughly 300 pitches thrown below last year's total and Estrada is roughly 850 pitches below. Estrada also had a DL stint and has had a bad back and it's not quite the same as pitches thrown vs IP. I understand the difference you're trying to say regarding strain on the arm but if you get taken out in the 3rd inning after getting roughed up in a tough 50+pitches outing, that can be just as exhausting or more than a 100 pitches 7IP game of clean ball with regular rest.
