Late innings in the post season you want defence and speed on the end of your bench.

Roemon Fields is your guy then

Well it was a fun thought.

Yeah

Bench will likely be Navarro, Barney, Carrera or Pompey and whichever of Upton/Smoak isn't starting

If Dickey is also off the roster you can add one more BP arm or bench player but there would be no need for it to be Thole

If Sanchez does not start in the playoffs (which I can only assume is because he's either moved to the pen or shut down/hurt), then it's between Liriano and Dickey for the last rotation spot in the playoffs. Sad but they might need Thole if Dickey has to start (hope not).

Sanchez will almost certainly start in the playoffs

It really isn't. 3 starters in the playoffs is all you need. No Idea where all this trouble comes from. Go with Stroman, Happ, and Estrada and f*** everyone else.

You CAN get by with 3, but we have 4 good options so I'd use 4

It's not like we have an ace and 3 other crap options like some teams have

... only for the first series and that's still 1 starter on short rest assuming there is a day off between days 2 & 3.

Anyone else sick of how good the Redsox of the future will be. Who is going to pitch for them? Price and Porcello will be finished in a year or two, and Wright already looks done.

I rather have 3 good young starters then position players.

Porcello is far from done--he's only 27 and can still improve. David Price is more uncertain--his stuff is set to decline, especially with so much mileage on that arm. Wright is definitely done as a starter--as a swingman in a role similar to Tim Wakefield, he'd be fine.. but Boston must upgrade the rotation in the offseason.

And Pomeranz and E-Rod are still there.

But yes, the Sox farm is very thin in pitching.. Kopech and Groome are years away, and most of the system is full of guys who don't project as high-calibre arms.

They have a couple of good young starters in the wings. I know they got a 100mph+ flamethrower in their system that's pretty highly regarded, 1st round draft pick a few years ago, dude could be scary in a couple years. Price & Porcello aren't done and they always have $ to spend on the market. Their future isn't overrated...

I think you're referring to Anderson Espinoza who was traded to the Padres.

Nope sorry it was Kopech, he was throwing 105mph this summer which made some headlines.

That was as a reliever though was it not? Apparently he hits upper 90's as a starter though regardless.

Building around position players instead of pitchers seems to be working well for the Cubs. Especially when you have the cash to sign pitchers (and avoid the development game - which is a massive crapshoot).

As pointed out - Porcello and Price are FAR from done. Price has a nasty change up and good control/command. I don't think he falls off a cliff when he loses a few MPH.

It seems he's started every game he's played in the minors thus far in his career.

The Mets are built around young pitching, absolute studs and they looked to be like a contender for a long time last year. I don't think it's going to turn out well for them though.

I think I read where is wRC+ would be highest of any qualified hitter on numerous teams, including the Yankees.

And if Gibby likes Bautista in the leadoff spot I'm ok with that but why on earth bat Pillar, Upton, Navarro, etc. at 7 and 8 with Travis batting 9th? That should be a no-brainer.

Gibbons being Gibbons. I'd love to hear his ridiculous explanation. Probably something along the lines of "Putting him in the 9 spot, with a good chance to get on, so Bautista and Donaldson can bring him home."

I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about bringing back Thole. He's obviously insurance in case (heaven forbid) Dickey needs to start during the post season. Cross your t's and dot your i's. There is nothing wrong we being prepared, which is literally all they're doing.

Scoring runs in the AL East has never been difficult for Yankees, Redsox, Jays etc. These teams win when they have starting pitching.

The reason its better to invest in young pitching, is because you can always find players who will do well in these parks. Look at the Jays, Edwin, Bautista, Saunders, Travis, Donaldson, These are all players that we didn't draft or develop and yet they are our best hitters. Same with the Sox in their hayday, manram and Ortiz were not developed by them, they were just guys (Manram less so)

Pitching is the commodity that is beneficial

In the NL however its the opposite. You can always find guys who can pitch in those pitching paradises and pitch to 8 hitters and 1 free out every three innings. They need to invest in young hitters to excel.

Way too much energy is spent in these lineup debates. Just bat your good hitters at the top of the order back to back, stick the players who can't hit at the bottom, and break up lefties if possible so opposing managers can't abuse LOOGYs. It isn't rocket science.

Anyone know who needs to be added to the 40 man roster to protect from the Rule 5?

Dermody was one. Alford, Urena for sure, possibly Perdomo or Borucki (more unlikely). And a few others as well but those are off the top of my head.
