intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I wouldn't say it's not an issue anymore completely, there is still a grey area and managers try to challenge every call. Managers will always use every tool possible to gain an advantage, but the players on the field aren't doing egregious slide tackles anymore. I think the rule has worked excellently in curbing a dangerous strategy.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 How much is this season cost Batz financially and for his pending off season?
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Is everyone as happy as me to see the new slide rule is no longer discussed or an issue? That took what - 6 weeks for players to adjust and for it not be an issue anymore? They should do a follow up interview with Goose Gossage and point out that he's a F'ing moron. The slide rule is a joke as is MLB telling managers to stop arguing balls and strikes because it was showing up the umps too much.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 "When the Blue Jays acquired Jason Grilli his numbers weren’t particularly impressive. With a 5.29 ERA and 13 walks in 17 innings, he appeared to be declining quickly. Sixteen appearances in Toronto suggest otherwise. After another stellar inning Sunday, the right-hander has 25 strikeouts against six walks in 14.2 innings with the Blue Jays for a 2.45 ERA." -BNS Pen has allowed 43 of 119 inherited runners to score and blown 13 saves. Grilli has been a god send.

Agreed. I don't often agree with WILNER, but I do on this. He asked the question why they weren't working on getting the umps and using technology to improve the ball/strike calls behind the dish. He also pointed out the NYY under Torre weren't amongst the worst complainers on this issue.

Literally every pitch that is tracked on a broadcast or through statcast (or whatever) completely undermines the credibility of the umpire being able to most effectively call the game. Like, the ump will make a call and the TV will immediately and almost unequivocally prove him wrong to the millions of people watching. It will also prove him right much of the time, which only suggests that the technology is as good as the umps at their best but also still much better than them at their worst.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 How much is this season cost Batz financially and for his pending off season? It's probably cost him 1-2 years of guaranteed money. No one will give him 5 years now. Not a chance. Our chances of keeping him on a Cespedes type deal have gone up if the Jays want to do that.

Yes, Pitchtracker has been a blessing and a curse. Its a very difficult thing to do calling behind the plate but so much rides on it. I know the calls tend to even out but games can change on one (or more) horrible call. Case in point Gm 6 with Revere and Navvy. there has got to be a better way. Soccer refused to change until the World Cup when England was screwed against Ger on a critical obvious goal (by replay) that was called a crossbar. Flames actually beat Tampa for the Cup but Gelinas winner was called a save. Baseball is slowly bringing in improvements and overall they have been good for the game. I'd like to see them turn some attn. to this.

I can even forgive them for being a bit egotistical since they can't exactly sit there and let players berate them, nor can they just flip a call they realize they blew and have the other team's players start chirping instead. It's pretty much an impossible position. The problem is putting them in the position in the first place, which is the league's fault when so much technology is staring them in the face, which they use on their websites for their cute highlight statcast reels but not in actual situations that affect their product.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Me and a friend were discussing it and could you not have challenges like Tennis where you could have the strike zone pop up on the big screen and show the actual location of the pitch. It would be quick and easy i think

Many umps consistently call the inside pitch (out of the strike zone according to pitch tracker) and not the outside, low and not high etc. Problem arises when the ump calls a pitch differently from what he's been calling it all game. No way to challenge that.

So, you think the jays should pay him 25m? lol He's going to be lucky to get 18-20m/yr as a free agent right now. I highly doubt any club is going to give a player entering his 36 age season, who will most likely finish with about 1-1.5 war max this year, 20m+/yr. He looks done in the OF, so you have a 1b/DH and declining real fast. I would do a 2/40 deal for him

I would do a 2/40 deal for him One the most read articles on line was in the Globe and Mail yesterday on Jose's gambit and declining value. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/kelly-opposite-bargaining-tactic-left-bautista-in-the-same-bad-spot/article30942821/ Its interesting Jose said he didn't believe in hometown discounts, but is now intimating more for a "face of franchise" contract which is essentially a "hometown premium". Cant really have it both ways. His first deal was fair to both sides. It was no hometown discount. Nobody knew if he was a one year wonder and PED allegations were all over him. Jose is quite capable of coming back and going on a tear that would get him to 2.5 to 3 WAR ish (good for us- hope he does) but when you look at comparables he is closer to Beltre's deal at this point. At least Beltre plays a premium position well still. What Big Papi is doing to aging curves is so rare. Last person to do it was probably Bonds. Jose is so far removed from his 6.5 and 8 WAR seasons now to go another 5 yrs would be insanity.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Does anyone doubt Papi is taking PEDs right now?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Does anyone doubt Papi is taking PEDs right now? a 178 wRC+ at his age. I've wondered but who knows. His season is unworldly. If he is, I hope he gets busted hard rocking Red Sox Nation to the core and we blow by them.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Oh boy. He's coming up soon isn't he? One can never have enough injury depth. Plus, the org kind of owes him nothing and doesn't really have to justify being stingy with a promotion. September bench bat is A-OK in my view.

Agreed, I don't see any reason he comes up unless there's an injury. He has options and we have many holes next year.

He's fine as organizational depth. I just have a feeling that he'll be up. Hell, he might even be an ok platoon partner with Smoak I guess. I just really hope we pick up someone better at the deadline.
