glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I'm more worried about the Jays being saddled with Tulo and Martin for 3-4 more seasons after this one. I've already accepted that Bautista and Edwin are goners after the year (and it's the right call when putting sentiment aside) but Tulo/Martin are going to be hard to move or untradeable so they better improve.

For sure. $40+mm/year for negative WAR is crippling unless you have unlimited budget. I just cant see them THIS bad continuing. (I keep saying this and they just don't get hot like I'd expect). Still a long way to go.

That's the story of the season so far. Some nice performances from the support guys, the rotation, and Donaldson have kept them at 0.500. Even the bullpen has been alright, and only has -1 WPA despite the terrible sequencing. The issue has been the four ageing star players. Mid-May and Bautista, Edwin, Tulo, and Martin have combined for 0 fWAR.

Unless they get rolling collectively, Edwin and Jose are writing their own epitaph in TOR and making it easier for Shapiro not to do what he shouldn't anyway. Tulo (and Reyes before him) and Martin 2016 to date are evidence enough of the perils of extending aging expensive players long term.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 No one predicted Tulo would be this bad given his still relatively young age, although the risk was high and why i repeatedly called for him to be traded the past offseason. Long season though, best thing to happen is he gets hot between now and the trade deadline and gets moved.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 This team will get hot and get on those 10 straight runs
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 It's a good team and it's certainly possible, but a lot of people overlook the vast improvements that the O's and Bo-Sox made. The divisions a lot better than it was last year, and the Jays can't just expect to go on another miracle run again.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Orioles are playing above their head though right?
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I don't think so. Their rotation has been costing them a lot of games and putting the team in rough situations but the offense and elite level bullpen's been compensating for that particular roster weakness. You consider the talent of guys like Davis, Machado, Trumbo(in the AL East) and Jones and you have a pretty elite core... Not to mention valuable pieces like Hardy and Weiters. I get it. I want the O's to lose as much as anyone here. It makes my blood boil if they beat the Jays, but we can't allow ourselves to be ignorant of the talent that they put on the field. It's a pretty darn good team, and they're a definite threat of ours. Certainly not a club we should dismiss as "trash".

We don't need a miracle run to win the Div but I wouldn't want us to fall any further back. We just need to be what we should be given the track records of the talent on this team. The team that stays healthiest will have the best shot of these 3.

That's about all we can ask for really, I mean I know we should have swept the Giants and taken the Dodgers series but winning 8 of 9 is just not easy in baseball. Gaining round on the O's & Red Sox is going to require winning series against them.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 Can't wait for the divisional games coming up Orioles and Sox keep winning too Gotta beat them head to head
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Why does everyone think the Yankees are out of it? They still have a decent/good offense, solid rotation, and ridiculous bullpen.

They aren't. They are a bit on the old side like us. Nobody else has a 40 year old who rakes like Papi. But they do have a lot of talent. Counting them out wouldn't be smart. Rays are no pushover either assuming Archer gets it rolling again.

The Rays need to admit to themselves that they made a mistake tying themselves to LOMO and just let go of that failed experiment.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 You must wonder who they will keep up Ryan Goins who can play 2 positions, who also has a solid glove the whole season or Darwin Barney who can only play 2B and has been average defensively so far or the darkhorse candidate... Andy f***ing Burns (if he gets a chance)
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Some good news from Travis. Maybe his rehab stint will be starting. Really hope it works out for him and he can make it back to being close to what he was 2015. The way Goins has played, the bar has been set so low I'm sure he is going to be a welcome shot in the arm regardless of who is pitching. His splits were great. Aside from a bit of sloppy D, Barney > Goins.

Aside from a bit of sloppy D, Barney > Goins. Lineup has too many outs in it. It's not Goins's fault that half the lineup is slumping but his spot is the easiest one to upgrade. With everyone else, you're just waiting for positive regression.
