Well, he's 33 so eventually one of his 150 PA runs of abysmal production is going to signify a decline in ability. If nothing else, starting consecutive seasons like this makes him unique among hitters as good as him.

Yeah, we talked about it when I pointed out that he had 150 PA of concerning K/BB numbers last year. He ended up being fine. That doesn't mean it's never an interesting topic of conversation when an ageing player stumbles out of the gate with over 100 terrible PA and increasingly worse PD stats.

 

If he plays to his ZiPS/Steamer 131 wRC+ projection ROS he'll finish the year at around a 123 wRC+ after four years at 150. That changes the conversation about a potential extension.

It will be interesting to see if last year plays out or these issues continue over full season. Edwin has big $ at stake.

 

Beltre is 37 and signed 2/36. His D adds so much value. Something Edwin doesn't have(or Jose for that matter). They simply have to mash to get paid.
