Archer was dominant today. Really nice to get the win when the opposing pitcher is shoving. Stroman had a pretty good game.

Jesus. He was under their planned pitch count for him more then likely and was rolling, so the sent him out for the ninth and yanked him when he gave up two hits. He was very clearly on a short leash. No harm no foul.

Some people just love to find fault in any situation

You're right in the fact he was on a short leash and i guess the extra six pitches doesn't make a difference. I'm just stating i personally would think it would have been an overall better decision to end his night after 8 innings on a high. If the score was within three runs going into the ninth, would Gibby send Stroman back out? You know Osuna would have started the ninth in that scenario, so bringing out Chavez/Floyd to start the ninth with a 5-1 lead would constitute the same line of thinking imo.

No man, he was hanging sliders... we should've rocked him or something, blah, blah, blah...

Except potentially wasting a mid reliever at the start of a 4 game series.

The pen is pretty deep though. If Chavez or Floyd would reach a pitch count in the 15-20 range, the chances of a save situation presenting itself would be high. In that case, Osuna would have been brought in and the the 15-20 pitches wouldn't necessarily mean you wouldn't be able to use that pitcher tomorrow to face one or two batters. Worse case, he isn't available until Wednesday. I think Gibby needs to maximize the value of this pen in order to shelter the starters throughout the season. The plan is to play in October again.

There isn't a manager in baseball that would have pulled stroman after 8 innings tonight, not John Gibbons, not Joe Maddon, nobody. You need to maximize your typing fingers lifespan. What happens if your fingers cramp up when Gibby makes a decision that is worthy of complaining about?

Cause everyone knows it's always a winning strategy to sit on a Chris Archer slider.

Its easy bro, you just swing at it and make contact. 50% chance it goes out of the park

I know some people brought up concerns about Stroman's velocity yesterday and they appear to be unfounded now that we have the pitch fx data. Stroman almost exclusively threw 2 seamers and cutters yesterday(only 2 4-seam fastballs). And the velocity on the those 2-seamers and cutters was fine, they were actually up from last year although obviously SSS.

^ Stroman looked fine though he didn't look like no ace.

Today's game is way more telling. I have a feeling Dickey is done.

Depends on how you define ace but Stroman looked really good yesterday. He did the things that he's really good at, get GB's and limit the walks. Going forward, he probably won't be a top 10 pitcher which is how i define ace but he an sneak into the top 20. There's a good chance he'll be the league leader in GB rate, competing with Brett Anderson for that.

It's refreshing to have a young likeable pitcher who is actually smart and realizes how helpful it is to go the distance.

Seems like people prefer 8Ks over 5 innings instead of 5ks over 8 innings. Smfh.

Even with how good he was yesterday he could have been better. His breaking ball was pretty inconsistent and he hung more than a few. I'm not sure he's ever going to strike out that many guys but he should be able to pitch a ton of innings since he can keep the pitch count low with the groundballs and few walks. A 2014 Keuchel seems pretty realistic which is close to an ace.

K rate has a low correlation with pitch count BTW. Getting strikeouts and keeping your pitchcount low are not competing factors.

You can clearly see people here praising Archer's performance over Stroman yesterday though.

Speaking of pitch f/x data that cutter that Osuna threw yesterday to Brad Miller was nasty. 93 mph with really good movement.

I didn't think I'd ever seen him throw it before and Brooks Baseball proved me right, as yesterday was the first recorded instance of the pitch. Could be another big weapon for him and makes me want to see what he can do as a starter.

I made a .gif of it. Sorry for garbage quality, don't really know what I'm doing.

Yeah not a lot of confidence with Dickey, still have nightmares about his playoff start against the royals.

well they are right, Stroman was fantastic but over the long run a team would be better off with Archer's 12K performance.

The bigger point i was making was that contrary to popular opinion "going for" strikeouts doesn't lead to a high pitch count. Many elite pitchers have great K rates and also go deep into games.

The real tradeoff is between going for groundballs and strikeouts.

I'm fine with Stroman being a groundball guy. Fits perfectly with how good the Jays infield defense is so he will likely out-perform his FIP by a good margin.

Can someone make it? Close to game time now. I won't make it since the only time I did they got blasted badly.

For further consideration, you're responding to the Dogg, notorious BJMB troll. He doesn't deserve a serious response.

Um, not to say that Stroman didn't have a good performance, but Archer was clearly much more dominant. He got 12 strikeouts againt the best lineup in baseball. His only downfall...was facing the best lineup in baseball lol.
