Choking on the Hendriks deal with Chavez in the pen. But it's a long season and I guess mgm thought he gave us more SP depth. Steep price given the control we gave up with it.

I hated that deal when it happened, and especially don't like it now, but who knows what happens this season.

Pillar keep leading off this spring scares me.

Gibbons has already confirmed him as the opening day leadoff guy.

I can't see that happening in a win year. I still think we need him in the pen vs RHH.

I'd be more upset if we started Sanchez in the pen than as a starter in the minors. We need to see if Sanchez can start. If he can develop into a solid starter that goes a long way to providing money available to sign at least one of Bautista or Encarnacion at the end of the year. We need to see where he stands as a starter, especially with the spring he is having. If you don't want him to start in the majors to start the year, put him at AAA and see if he can excel.

Too bad it's not Martin. He would be my choice if we're considering that Bautista and Tulo don't want to. Martin has a high OBP, low K-rate, and average speed/base running. He seems like a perfect choice imo?

Given that Sanchez suggested he'd "go down" and work on things if Floyd takes the 5th spot, I'm thinking that he's already been told that he could continue to start in AAA if he doesn't want to join the pen.

where was this?

I think he's referring to "go down to the pen".

Yeah, the interviewer interpreted that way as well, but it seems weird to refer it that way?

He has options but the only way he goes to BUFF willingly is if they roofie him.

They should show him the pay scale for 4/5 starters vs. 6th inning relief pitchers. If he doesn't go to Buffalo willingly after that - I'm banishing him to the Pillar school of stupidity.

6th inning? He's been one of the best relievers in the game for the past 2 seasons.

Lol. You are talking about our lead off hitter! ;) Maybe I'm wrong but Sanchez has had a big taste of the bigs including playoffs and he will want to start...but not in BUFF. It's kind of moot anyway because he doesn't have a choice.

he can't get lefties out to save his life, how is he one of the best relievers?

Batters on both sides of the plate hit .149/.221/.191 against him, so something is working. They may be a touch of BABIP luck in there, but keep in mind that he gives up the least amount of hard contact in the league by a HUGE margin and exactly 2/3 of his balls in play are ground balls.

Wade Davis: .158/.236/.236

Dellin Betances: .158/.236/.236

Kenley Jansen: .174/.215/.298

Aroldis Chapman: .154/.268/.227

Which could just as easily support the argument that he's been one of the luckiest pitchers in baseball so far in his career, by a HUGE margin.

I don't agree with your assertion that quality of contact is a luck based skill. That goes for both hitters and pitchers.

what are you doing

Elite relievers should be able to come into any situation. The problem with Sanchez is that even if he comes into a game with the bases loaded and gets consecutive outs, it might not matter because those outs were balls put into play. His line might look good but ultimately we could lose.

The other issue are his huge platoon splits.

In other words, if there's runners on 2nd and 3rd and a couple LHBs coming up, you don't want to use Sanchez. And an elite reliever is not supposed to have these limitations IMO.

You're welcome to your opinion, but that is just semantics. Is Chris Davis not an elite power hitter because he has a 97 wRC+ against LHP's? Same goes for David Ortiz. Put in a lefty and they are both merely average. The total package for Davis, Ortiz, and Sanchez is elite though. That's what matters to me. Any incorrect usage is on Gibby's shoulders.

Posted
Whats Sanchez's splits solely as a Reliever? We know they are bad as a starter but I think he's been much better at getting LHH out as a reliever.

They are likely above average or else his splits vs. RHP would be jaw droppingly good.

Lefties hit .146/.244/.225 in a 46 batter sample in 2014, for what it's worth. I think the split disappears when he only uses the fastball.

Could you stop using a triple slash for stats against a pitcher? Thanks.

my god, you guys really just never learn. Do you honestly ever think there will be a day where Grant concedes a single point? Why bother engaging with a guy who has no interest in self-correction?

It's honestly like a drug.

The whole Gose on the radio thing was that first high, that we all continue to chase. But we know that nothing good comes of these pursuits. Only misery.

Just make sure there's someone else around to roll you over when you puke.

Sorry. I'll stop bring up statistics that disprove your false narrative. The last time the forum was this united against myself and the statistical data was when I insisted that Brett Cecil was a good pitcher. In fact, this is probably tame compared to that one. It's kind of hard to take any of your Sanchez comments seriously when the facts and logic are overwhelmingly against you. I can only laugh every time I hear "...but left handers....but the changeup....but his first 5 starts...". It's the same s*** over and over.
