Get it done Shatkins.

Why? The best thing would be to just let the season play out. If we re-sign them now, we lose the flexibility to trade them at the deadline if we have to.

Also, they'll probably put in alot more effort for a contract year.

If you don't sign him now, and he puts up a monster season, we stand a very good chance of getting out-bidded.

See if he signs a 3/63 deal. If not try for 4/80. I'd like to see it happen and I think he would resign now for 4/80. Then no matter what we have 3 star hitters going forward in Tulo/JD/Edwin.

And on a side note, to the idiots who I keep hearing call into The Fan 590 suggesting trade Tulo to free up space to sign both Joey and Edwin, are they nuts? Tulo's deal pays him $20 mill for the next 4 years, then drops to 14 mill in 2020 and there is a 15 mill option in 2021, his age 36 season. Thats not an insane amount for a player of his caliber, if he can stay relatively healthy will end up looking like a bargain in the long run. $30 mill/year is going to be the new $20 mill/year.

One thing I noticed since Shatkins came over, there are a lot more leaks than during the AA era.

The guy is an open book...always has been. He's appeared on MLB Radio every week for about 7 years.

As for the extension. EE signing at a number that this F.O. is willing to sign him for (under market value) is going to make Bats look pretty greedy. I'd be most comfortable giving him 2 years with 2 big number buyout options (like a $7M buyout as a show of good faith). If NL gets the DH his value goes up, so maybe he gets an offer close to market. I really don't know anything and added nothing to this conversation. I'm just going to ban myself now.

We don't have flexibility in trading EE and putting in more effort for a contract year thing doesn't usually apply. Wouldn't you put more effort in winning for a team you want to retire with over a team you won't be playing for in a few months?

It doesn't make sense to be opposed to this without even knowing what the terms will be. Nothing wrong with negotiating with a player with a stated interest to stay. You can always walk away if you don't come to terms but I suspect they'll find something that works for everyone.

Like I said, its a contract year. There has been a history of guys having crazy contract/walk seasons and then turning to s*** after signing a big contract.

I'm kind of glad that we aren't hearing rumors that they want to backload the contracts... I want financial security now and the next few years as well

Edwin's been steadily excellent for the last four years, though. If you look at the numbers for 2012-2015 you'd be forgiven for not realizing which stats belong to which year. He's very consistent. Not sure how much more he could improve even with "more effort".

Yeah, I'd wait until the end of the season. Unless the NL getting the DH happens in 2017, the number of teams needing a DH and willing to spend that much for one will probably be limited. I could see him testing the market next winter and ultimately coming back to the Jays anyway, ala Alex Gordon with the Royals.

Regardless, I get the feeling Edwin really wants to come back. Maybe he'll work something out that is mutually beneficial.

4/100 and you got yourself a deal.

No way this FO does that. The only way EE gets close to 25/year is on a shorter term deal. Even then it seems high to me.

OR he gets hurt or has an awful season and the price goes down. The only reason you take the risk off of him for 2016 and extend is if you get a reasonable discount for giving him that security. Edwin has been great for us and very consistent. I would not be suprised if this deal happened.

I think it has been pointed out in lots of articles, but DHs just don't have that great of a market. Personally I think if they give him 4/85 he should sign. Over 20 mil a year for a DH would be a great for EE. Probably too high even on the Jays' part.

Would rather sign Edwin than Bautista at this point. Bautista is too much of a sideshow and wants way too much money. Sign Edwin, if Bautista walks then go out and sign a #1 pitcher using the money saved by not signing Bautista and by Dickey likely leaving or retiring or taking way less money...makes us a more well rounded team.

Thin is, starting pitching next year is really thin... The whole market is actually pretty thin.

For #1s there's really only Strasburg and maybe Shields(if he opts out). Some other pitchers are Kazmir(if he opts out), Clay Buchholz, Andrew Cashner.

I suspect there are NL teams who would let him play 1B next year, especially if they know the DH spot.is coming

If you sign you sign Edwin there will be no money to sign a #1, especially seeing as there is only one top end pitcher hitting free agency.
