ColdPint Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 So many distractions already, not even 24 hours into spring training. Hopefully the team will be able to get to work and focus on the task at hand, otherwise this could turn in to a shitshow of a year.

Brenner Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Given what Bautista has said already in the media regarding his contract negotiations, he should be completely open instead of half open and tell us what his ask is. Not sure what the point is in him saying publicly that he wants to resign but wont negotiate is without telling us what his demands are. If they are reasonable than fan pressure will help his cause, otherwise its only reasonable to side with management because we can only assume his demands are unreasonable.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Well Rogers and the Jays FO certainly aren't going to win any PR awards. After such a great season its one disaster after another.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I'd go as much as 4/90 or 5/100
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I'd go as much as 4/90 or 5/100 Same. I wouldn't go past 20m per year unless it were for 4 years.

Their big-mouthed star player went off to the media, and a hack journalist made an irresponsible tweet.

Also when you call a press conference and say negotiations will not be public and hours later a number is leaked, it doesn't exactly look good no matter how you slice it. Having a press conference this morning should never have happened.

Maybe its only $149m over five years?

No management is ever going to be completely open about contract negotiations so why would it change just because Jose can't keep his big mouth shut.

If only they had told him in advance that calling ownership out to a national audience is not advisable.

Sure there are things you can't control but the things that they could control haven't gone well either. Telling Michael Saunders the trade was just "rumours" and he shouldn't be concerned is just as bad.

It's not like journalists never make s*** up.

So they should've told Saunders that they think he's worthless and they would practically give him away at this point?

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 In a way I hope this is true. Why? Because the only way he's getting that kind of money is if he bats .800 with 85 home runs this year and 22 WAR so he's going to be super motivated to bust his ass.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I highly doubt that because Rosenthal was in on it. I suspect the Bruce part was legit, but it's entirely possible Rosenthal had someone else suggest to him the Saunders part and it made enough sense to assume was true. Heck, it might be true. I'm just not willing to assume blindly that it is, and that the team would lie to Saunders about it. Hell, for all we know maybe it was someone like Smoak that was going to LA (which would make some sense if Pujols is having health issues).
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 probably trying to get the fans to bully Rogers into paying what he wants. Yep, and Rogers will now turn the media against Jose. This was very avoidable.
