ColdPint Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I'd be surprised if the parties aren't trying to restructure the trade to work around the medical issues. I'm sure it's not dead and done. I'd be really comfortable with going into the season with Pompey as our LF though - I think he's going to have a breakout year and be really solid for the Jays for years to come.

Working around medical issues isn't easy. Saunders is the moveable piece here as we're not moving prospects directly for Bruce instead. The Jays are so concerned about Saunders that they'd move him for Bruce, and it sounds like the Angels are just as scared of his rap sheet.

Fair enough but have we received confirmation that Saunders medicals are the hold up or is it still speculative? Pompey, if given the opportunity, will out-WAR both Saunders and Bruce this season and he brings something different to the table for the Jays.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't Saunders medicals that killed this deal. I'm depressed now; was really hoping to get Bruce. Hazel Mae is upset now cuz she won't get to "date" Bruce on a regular basis now.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Keep the 10M available for the trade deadline when we know what we actually need
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jays apparently were going to send a prospect in the deal. Without knowing who the prospect was and how much money they were obligated to pick up, it's hard to say whether this is a good or bad thing. I'd rather have Bruce in LF with Pompey in AAA than Pompey in LF and a s*** storm in AAA and Saunders on the DL. But if the Jays were sending a good prospect and/or picking up a large chunk of Bruce's contract, then that's not appealing at all. I guess we will never know. I doubt the trade gets re worked, and if it's Saunders who is the hold up, then I hope it doesn't. Last thing the Jays need is to add prospects or money to make the deal more appealing.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jay Bruce was going to be this years Chris Davis. I liken him to an expensive Juan Francisco
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 If we were supposed to send any prospects in the deal, then i'm glad it got cancelled. Bruce is not worth losing any of our top 10 prospects.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Michael Saunders and Ross Atkins will both be speaking to the media today.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jay Bruce's bat was good for most of the season last year. After the first 2/3 of the season he was hitting .257/.341/.486 It was just that his last 1/3 of the season was very s*****, which made his overall year look bad. And it looks like his last 1/3 of the year he might have had a little bit of bad luck, his babip was .193 I feel he's a bounce back candidate for this year. He was also able to drop his SO rate last year to the same rate he had earlier in his career. I'd have no problem taking him on a 1 year contract, especially if the Reds are throwing a little bit of cash our way. And if he does flourish under a new team with his old hitting coach he's got a cheapish team option for 2017. If our part of the deal is Saunders for Bruce + cash. I'd pull the trigger in a second.

To be honest, sounds like a Justin Smoak getting paid like Jose Bautista to me...

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I have never had any faith in Saunders, but just because he doesn't pass a physical from the Angels doesn't mean he's dead goods. Let's at least wait to see if he plays a spring training game before writing him off completely. I am happy this trade did not go through because I didn't see any indication that it was anything other than a straight up trade Saunders for Bruce with no money involved. Adding Bruce to the payroll when this regime has been crying poor all off-season would have been rage-inducing with better options to spend to shore the bullpen or OF through free agency. And that includes not trading Revere so there'd be no hole to fill in the OF in the first place.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 To be honest, sounds like a Justin Smoak getting paid like Jose Bautista to me... Except Bruce was actually good for 4 years and Smoak wasn't?
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I don't mind taking a shot with Bruce if the Reds are kicking in money. But I don't mind rolling with Saunders as long as they are confident he can play. I'm very 'meh' about this whole saga.

This means that the Jays were giving up something more than just a scrub, because a minor leaguer scrub not passing a physical is easily replaced by another scrub. It also means one Jays prospect is injured.
fireballW Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I think having Bruce could be really fun. Chance he has some some of bounce back.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Me too. I didn't see it as some sort of defining moment of the Shapiro regime a few were making it out to be, from a confidence perspective. I'm really hoping Pompey blossoms this year and Saunders and/or Bruce becomes a side show.

ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Shapiro: Unimpressed that AA traded prospects away for Price. Trades Saunders and a prospect for a $12 million replacement level outfielder even though we have no money to get a pitcher and Austin Jackson is sitting at home waiting for a contract. Makes sense.

I'm really hoping Pompey blossoms this year and Saunders and/or Bruce becomes a side show. If you really believed pompey could blossom, you wouldn't add salary and give up a prospect plus saunders to acquire bruce though. I don't think Atkins has the confidence in pompey or saunders. Saunders I get as far as the injury risk goes, but I think Pompey is legit.
AncientDiety Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 A trade involving Saunders falls through because of medical reasons, and Saunders is not the guilty party. Things you thought you would never hear.

The best thing about baseball is its unpredictable and its all going to unfold on the field...soon.
