jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Manny was still an elite hitter until 38 when injuries prevented him from even being able to stay on the field. You could probably give him a 4 year deal and expect to take a slight loss the last 2 years while still getting an elite hitter the first two. Batista means more to this franchise and the fan base than just his WAR total though. You could go back to the early 2000's and find a lot of the elite hitters like Palmeiro aging well
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Now comment on al of the absolute studs that fell off a cliff between 35 and 37. I hope they keep him, but there's inherent risk here. No deals are without risk, but no risk no reward. There are plenty of baseball players in history who played well in their late 30s and into their 40s. There are plenty of baseball players that were done at 32. Bautista doesn't rely solely on physical skills. His approach at the plate and his understanding of hitting and what pitchers try to do to him is well above average. You combine that with his physical shape relative to other ball players his age, and I think he's a pretty good gamble. He can still play the field and I have no doubt he can transition to 1st and play DH. I think he will be a premium hitter for the next 5 years.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 train of thought seems kind of contradictory. how much more can he do with the glove when he's DHing or learning a new position? he has played 26 games at 1B his entire career (1300+ games total). he is not providing positive value with his glove at this point. u maximize him by using him at DH but you don't really maximize the roster by locking him in there. is it trully better to hide him at 1B than his more comfortable RF at this point? i dunno. i'd lean toward keeping him at his more natural RF position though (if he's not DHing of course). So you want him to bleed runs in RF for the next 4-5 years instead of trying to transition him to 1B because he's more comfortable playing RF?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Whay hitters have made it through, say, 37 without a huge decline recently? Ortiz and Bonds. I'm probably missing a few. chipper, thome, marlin byrd, tori hunter, beltran.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 chipper, thome, marlin byrd, tori hunter, beltran. Hunter, Thomr and Jones are nice examples. Beltran is a bit of a cautionary tale. He's been a poor investment.

Beltran bounced back hitting wise last year. He's just not meant to play the outfield, but he can't DH in New York.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 +20 M by year DH? beltran got 15 mil a year and I'm not saying his deal was a good deal. I'm saying it would have been a bit more palatable if there was flexibility for him to DH. Bautista can still play right field. He will be able to play first and obviously DH. You're not paying 20+ million for a DH. Where you position him changes throughout the life of the contract.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Another thing in Bautista's favour is he is in much better shape than a lot of those players. Also his skill set (elite BB and K rates) bode well for him to continue his productivity. The guy has walked more than he has struck out in each of the last 2 years which is amazing when you factor how much power he hits for.
crazy47larry Verified Member Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 So you want him to bleed runs in RF for the next 4-5 years instead of trying to transition him to 1B because he's more comfortable playing RF? well i want him to DH first and foremost. if he is bleeding runs i would feel slightly more comfortable with him bleeding runs at OF at this point, yes.
Chfan Verified Member Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 They need to sign him. He's a big part of the team's identity. He brings a lot of leadership as we seen in the playoffs. I also get the feeling that Shapiro wants to keep him as well. I think it'll be done.

If he's asking to much or the GM wants to take another route it's best to let him walk. Yes Bautista as much as I hate the guy has been nothing but amazing for this team but sometimes it's best to cut ties with a player if the teams going in a different direction.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Albert Pujols Best 10 first season ever, and the Cards acted like a true Cards team.

I've looked into doing something like this but find its fairly difficult to find the photos and somewhere that will print a photo that size.

mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I really don't feel strong on a long-term JoseB extension. From an emotional point of view, I want him back. He's been a big part of our team. I think he can still produce on a elite level on the offensive side. But I'm kind of skeptical on giving him a 4-5 years deal for 2 reasons: 1. I don't want him to be our long-term RF. While he still has the canon arm, I've seen enough of him struggling getting to the ball. 2. Any player can just fall off a cliff offensively when they are at his late 30's. It's like a time bomb. Prime example is Pujols, like many already mentionned.

That's why you give him a 3 year deal, with a 4th option year. This way he can play RF sometimes, and 1B sometimes. Or even DH if EE is gone. He still has an elite bat, and I don't think we can find someone to replace what he means for the team.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 So assuming Life is deemed at 25 years, cause I am sure Rogers uses the prison term in this instance when dealing with Batz's contract request. Most here I think would agree 5/125 May be the max for him in free agency. So based on 25 years/life let's offer him 18 mill per season for 5 years and 2-2.5 for the duration of 25 years. Options after 5 years at 8-10 mill if picked up by team after year Five or traded to another team. Waves his no trade clause. So based on 5 years at 18 and Max 2.5 per/ 20y he would make 140 not bad If he makes 7 years max 110 + 45 = 155 if I didn't fail math! Lol

Of course any print shop will be willing to print a huge poster, but if the original photo doesn't have the resolution to support that size then it'll look hideous.
