One thing I'd be interested in seeing is if there is a correlation with catching Dickey and being a worse hitter. We know Martin was horrible on days he caught Dickey last year but the sample is still small. I wonder what the numbers would look like if you were to take every catcher who caught Dickey and look at the splits.

You could very well factor this into Dickey's valuations if he's essentially responsible for a second roster spot.

I was going to say this too, but I think I'd lay it on the org who couldn't conceive of a better option. It shouldn't be on Dickey, but there's an argument to be made that the team's conception of Dickey has cost.

Something like Dickey Actual vs Dickey as Used.

All glove no bat catchers aren't exactly a rarity. Cheung is probably a better catcher, main difference is that he doesn't have any residual prospect shine but he'd probably provide as much value. Thole isn't really any worse either. Sanchez MIGHT be lesser defensively (if we're going by old scouting reports on A.J.'s glove) but he's an infinitely more valuable player as someone who can actually hit a little while playing the position.

Jimenez is a non-asset. The only reason the Astros might want him is as a dirt cheap fill-in for Stassi. They'd dfa him as soon as the later came back.

I'd be ok with carrying Chung on the roster because he is versatile. He can play catcher, 2nd, has played 3, and could probably play the corner outfield spots.

Josh Thole has been such a blight on this organization. Over the last 3 years:

120 games, 337 PA, 212/283/258 line for a 0.250 wOBA and 53 wRC+. -0.7 fWAR + a couple of framing runs, maybe, depending on the math that results from catching Dickey.

The opportunity cost of rostering this leech is significant. -0.7 wins from him, when a hallway competent team should have been able to get about a win from half a season of a backup catcher. That's a 1.7 win swing. I can not accept that he's so uniquely skilled at catching Dickey that he earns his keep.

0.5 WAR from our backup catcher? We could barely get that from our starting first baseman last year!!!

The platoon only served up a half WAR? We got 1.4 not including EE.

OK - I'm stretching the truth.....but we only got 0.6 WAR from Smoak in a platoon role over half a season of at bats. Is it reasonable to expect that out of a backup catcher starting 40 games?

Maybe it is...in which case - we should conclude that Smoak sucks.

I kinda see it going like this:

AJ Jimenez is being showcased for the Astros today according to some Houston writer on Twitter. Wonder if they have another JD Martinez they don't appreciate.

I hear they are talking Dan Straily.

Which one of us is the fat kid?

Does he have options?

Looks like he's out of options and is on the bubble as far making the Astros roster based on some articles. Makes sense that theywould be looking to move him in that case as I can't see him passing through waivers. Getting him for Jimenez would be a good deal for the Jays if it were to happen.

Well s***. I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Also out of options and they want a second lefty into their pen. He'll be the odd man out when McCullers is back. I honestly don't know what his trade value is.

I'm pretty sure I'm like 15 years younger, like 30 pounds heavier, and don't have a a bad back.
