BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 A lot can happen in 2016 and next off season that could influence this, but we have kicking this around on the board for a long time already. I thought it might be interesting to look back once we see what actually happens. If you have a guess at where they will end up, take a shot. The Upton, Davis, Cespedes, Gordon deals will provide some comparables. My prediction: Edwin - 4/84 - Jays (Signs a somewhat team friendly deal to stay in Toronto on what might be his last deal) Jose - 5/110 - Not with Jays (Jose is all business - knows its his last deal and takes the maximum term/amount he can get) I don't blame them or the Jays if neither end up staying and the Jays get a couple of picks. Great players, but its a business.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 JB 4/$100 EE 5/$100 Because I like to keep my math simple. For anyone worrying about losing these guys, just think back to 1989. In the span of 18 months the Jays lost Barfield, Bell and Moseby, the team's very popular and very effective OF for the better part of the 80's for essentially nothing (a young pitcher who was injured until his FA year). The team seemed to do just fine after that.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Aren't they talking about Cespedes to the Nats for just over $100M/5. I'd rather have that this upcoming year than 5/110 on Jose when he's a year older. Surely you could make an argument to ownership about that.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Bautista 5 years 120M - Jays Edwin 5 years 105M - Red Sox

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Bautista 5 years 120M - Jays Edwin 5 years 105M - Red Sox You overpay to prevent that.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Neither will be resigned by the current regime Bautista Yankees Edwin Redsox Jays will have Cola at 1st and Smoak at DH with an outfield of Pompey Saunders and Pillar. Penny pinching has began.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Bautista 5 years 120M - Jays Edwin 5 years 105M - Red Sox Sounds right.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 You overpay to prevent that. Red Sox will be all over Edwin. You couldn't find a more logical replacement for Ortiz and the timing is perfect. Will be hard to outbid them.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I would not pay that much for both of them I don't think either of them are going to require a 5 year commitment. Bats is 35 and Edwin is 33 they will get 2 or 3 year deals. Which I would be very comfortable with. Nobody is giving them 5 years until they are 40 and 38.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Red Sox will be all over Edwin. You couldn't find a more logical replacement for Ortiz and the timing is perfect. Will be hard to outbid them. Not if he wants to stay.
nmrch Verified Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) Edwin is 2 and 1/4th years younger than Bautista, and he's just as good of a hitter, 149 vs 146 wRC+ in the last 4 years. You can also make the case that Encarnacion is more durable, and don't forget he's absurdly consistent. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Edwin got more money if they both hit the market. Yes there will obviously be the DH penalty but he has a lot going for him and at this point the league knows Bautista is a liability in the outfield. Edited January 21, 2016 by nmrch
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I would not pay that much for both of them That's just it. I hope we can afford to keep one, and if so I'd pick Bautista. With the money JD and Tulo will be making, I don't see any waynthey could afford to pay both 20-24M a year. There's just no way.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Not if he wants to stay. I suspect he likes it here. But I wouldn't count on him taking less money to stay here vs Boston.

Especially Edwin based on what his agent said. If he's not signed before this season starts I would think we have little chance to re sign him next ofd season.

If he's not signed before this season starts I would think we have little chance to re sign him next ofd season. That might be the case but I wouldn't read too much into that. Its could be posturing and Shapiro postured back to not be pushed by the Agent's timetable. Money talks at any point. Edwin signed the last extension, heading into free agency, during the season. Granted he is more established now as a premier bat. Its going to be interesting.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 No one will WANT to give Bautista 5 years. They will want him for 3. But with next year's weak FA class I think he gets 4 or 5.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Edwin 5/110 Jays Jose 5/120 Rangers

nmrch Verified Member Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Jose 3/48 elsewhere EE 4/62 here Yeah, i'm sure 2 of the 10 best hitters in all of Baseball (and by far the best hitters available in FA)will settle for a barely above league average salary.
