Cubs signed INF Munenori Kawasaki to a minor league contract.Kawasaki was a big fan favorite during his time in Toronto, but the 34-year-old owns a rough .234/.314/.284 batting line in 712 major league plate appearances. He will function as organizational infield depth for a Cubs team that is loaded with much better talent

Always seemed to be a clutch performer though. Am I wrong?

Yes. Terrible, terrible baseball player. Not major league calibre in any respect.

I was at Price's last regular season start in Toronto vs. the Rays.

A liner went down the baseline fair and ended up kicking around the wall behind Smoak. Some ginger knuckle dragger just reaches over and plucks the fair ball off the field. Quickly escorted out he told security he didn't know that was illegal.

He was in a Kawasaki jersey.

Shapiro at it again!

In all seriousness I don't understand why he doesn't go back to Japan to both play everyday and make more money. Looks look like he will playing in Iowa next season and that kind of sucks.

AA is an idiot. Kawi is a piece of s***, but he added Kawasaki to the 25-man roster several times

I don't truly understand this view.

Fangraphs thinks he is OK for a backup... his career numbers are amazingly close to Ryan Goins actually. Not that there is huge love for Goins around here.

In a lot of ways he is the anti goins. Awkward, patient, seems to get the most out of his abilities. Looks horrible.

Goins looks great. He looks like he should hit like Don Mattingly. Impatient (other then 50 games last year)

Goins/Kawasaki 200 games, 700 plate appearnaces, 1.x fWAR. real close. Not starters, but OK backups... am I wrong??

Goins looks like Don Mattingly... probably crazy statement. But what I mean is, doesn't Goins look like he _should_ hit. If you were just watching a few games and saw him line a couple balls to the opposite field, saw him hit one of his 5 homers.

You'd say "that's a ballplayer, hell of a ballplayer"

I'm thinking that's what happened to Gruber.... saw Ryan Goins in his best 5 game stretch in 2013, "that's a ballplayer!"

Wait till he lets Bautista walk. They are going to fume, should make for a good time.

That should make everyone fume. Last time I checked he remains a great baseball player.

depends which direction he wants to take the team. He could let EE and Bau walk and get draft picks and start a rebuild.

I really REALLY hope we don't get caught in the middle this year, keep our vets at the deadline, miss the playoffs, and let them walk for just comp picks

Yah the Jays are potentially sitting on a gold mine of prospects at the deadline if they really want which will help in the long run of speeding up a rebuild.

That would be a truly awful decesion.

Kawasaki was not a good baseball player... but I liked having him around. Like mentioned above, he was more cheerleader/mascot than ballplayer though.

Yeah, it was so much fun to sit there and laugh at the funny chinaman. Definitely not racist at all.

He was fine as a AAA player and it's not like he was misused, even by AA. He played in case of emergencies only and he was above replacement level.

Not sure why it's fashionable to start s***ing on the guy.

So if I laughed after he had his game winning hit and interview I was being racist? Was I being racist when I laughed about his "monkey never cramps" interview?

As frustrating as he was to watch on the field with all his limitations... dude's a hell of a hard worker and a personality, so I can respect that.

Best of luck to him in Chicago. Maybe we can even pull a John Scott and get him into the all star game. More incentive for us to do it since it sabotages the NL and we're in the AL.
