Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Holy s***!! This is notable for the Red Sox since sources have suggested there would be significant mutual interest between the first baseman/designated hitter and the Sox if Encarnacion did become a free agent following the 2016 season. He was a favorite of Sox manager John Farrell when both were in Toronto.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I feel like we aren't going to resign him. Shapiro seems to have kept his Cleveland Indians mentality of being extremely frugal. And given that after this year our window to compete likely closes...my guess is he lets Edwin walk at the end of the year. Really hope I'm wrong.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 They both will be gone. Book it. EDIT: The Jays will say that they thank them for all that they've done for the organization and then another team will come in and offer either EE or Bautista a better contract with more $ or more years and they'll take it. The problem is that the front office won't make any real effort to replace the produckshun that both guys give you, hedging their bets guys like Donaldson, Tulo, Martin and Travis can do the job. Hmmmm....sure. So in 2017 when we're not scoring as many runs as in 2016, but our mediocre SP lead with Stroman, Estrada and Happ is still giving up 4ish plus runs a game - how are we gonna make the playoffs again? Answer - we won't. And so begins the rebuild for the next 3 - 4 years to get a cost controlled, effective rotation like the Indians. Which isn't cool but if that's what we're gonna do... Just trying to mentally get prepared for the downslide that is about to begin.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Bautista is pretty close to being a DH anyway, tough decisions will need to be made.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 They both will be gone. Book it. agreed. picks coming, or deals if we are out of it in 2016.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 The thing is here and i know it should not be something you should worry about but if you give a contract extension to Edwin and not to Jose are you pissing someone off, or should it really be something to worry about.

We'll have to get him to agree to a trade if we have no intention of resigning him. I have no problem trading him, just seeing him walk for nothing would be extremely unwise. Especially since we have one of the weakest farms in all of MLB.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Bautista is pretty close to being a DH anyway, tough decisions will need to be made. Bautista 1B, Edwin DH, sign Heyward, sign Cuteo, sign Chapman next year. C'mon ROgers!!!

I've been in favour of offering them both twin extensions at like 3/$45M (2017-19), but it's hard to see how that would get it done at this point.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Dombrowski is probably going to sign both.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Oh goodie, another item for the media (and Marty York) to jump all over and skewer Shapiro with. "Blue Jays flip bird to Ed-Wing" ~ a possible Steve Simmons headline
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 NASHVILLE — The Red Sox likely will be keeping a close eye on Edwin Encarnacion news the next few months. According to multiple major league sources, Encarnacion will commit to becoming a free agent if no extension is worked out with the Blue Jays by the end of spring training. This is notable for the Red Sox since sources have suggested there would be significant mutual interest between the first baseman/designated hitter and the Sox if Encarnacion did become a free agent following the 2016 season. He was a favorite of Sox manager John Farrell when both were in Toronto. Encarnacion, who turns 33 in January, potentially could slide in to replace David Ortiz at the designated hitter position, depending on how Hanley Ramirez progresses at first base. The representatives for Encarnacion — who will make $10 million in 2016, the final year of what has become a four-year deal — will meet with the Blue Jays at the winter meetings over the next few days to discuss the slugger’s contract status. The Blue Jays are also facing the prospects of another one of their foundation players, Jose Bautista, hitting free agency after the ’16 season. Encarnacion has the ninth-best OPS (.912) in the major leagues over the past three seasons, with the third-most home runs (109). Last season, he hit 39 homers with a .929 OPS.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Ortiz -> EE would be nice move by the Sox
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I would not want to be in charge of setting the course for this team over the next year. Many tough decisions to be made.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Author Posted December 7, 2015 Dombrowski is probably going to sign both. Imagine what they could do in half a season at Fenway... and they have Chris Young too. I think he's going to have a big year.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I wouldn't rule out Shapiro signing one of them if the deal makes sense for the team. It's just unlikely. This is a heart vs brain situation. The heart wants to see them retire as Jays and win at least one championship in Toronto, while the brain is pointing out that paying free agent money for a player's twilight is doomed to fail.

This smells like borderline tampering. "MLB's tampering rules say "there shall be no negotiations or dealings respecting employment, either present or prospective, between any player, coach or manager and any club other than the club with which [the player] is under contract or acceptance of terms," which in English means that a team is not allowed to discuss employment with a player while he is under contract with another team."
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Even if you keep 1 of JB or EE payroll is going to have to be at least $160 million next year to be competitive. I can't see Bautista signing for anything less than 4/80 as a Floor and EE its probably 4/70.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I'd see what Zobrist signs for and then use that as a basis for an offer to both of them. They are different players but similar ages and talent level. Moving forward we have payroll space and I also believe if Bautista can play 1B we will have enough room on the roster too.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Also of annoyance for some/joy for others is the following: BIG CONTRACTS ON THE JAYS BOOKS 2016 - Tulo ($20M), Martin ($15M), Bautista ($14M), Dickey ($12M), Estrada ($11M), Encarnation ($10M), Happ ($10M), Donaldson (ARB, $12M) 2017 - Tulo ($20M), Martin ($20M), Estrada ($17M), Happ ($13M), Donaldson (ARB, $???) 2018 - Tulo ($20M), Martin ($20M), Happ ($13M), Donaldson (ARB, $???) 2019 - Tulo ($20M), Martin ($20M), Happ ($13M), Donaldson (ARB, $???) 2020 - Tulo ($14M), Donaldson (ARB, $???) Everybody else is on arbitration.
metafour Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I wouldn't bring either back, seriously. Bautista is 35, and go take a look at Encarnacion's plate-discipline metrics (swing %, contact %, whiff %) over the past three years: he's regressing.

Thats the thing JB will want to be paid as a star right fielder and he has little value as a outfielder anymore. He has an arm and that is it. Breaks are worse, speed is declining (age catching up to him). If it was up to me sign EE and either Trade or let JB walk (pun intended).
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Since they know EE would probably waive his 10/5 rule to go the Red Sox, I'd be tempted to extend him and flip him for x,y,z by the deadline.

It's not tampering, not even borderline. If Dom said "we like Encarnacion", then yeah, but it was through a media outlet. The smart thing to do is for the Red Sox to use the media to leak this type of stuff (Which is probably what they did, though)
