Castillo has upside? I doubt it--he'll be 29 in July and he has shown he is not an MLB regular. A sub .300 OBP, poor baserunning instincts, and high K rate.. is it a wonder why Boston signed Chris Young? They likely see either he or Bradley(or both) being busts as regulars, especially after both of them struggled badly in Sept/Oct. And BTW, Castillo isn't hitting right-handers.. high risk he turns into an expensive platoon with Chris Young and/or Brock Holt.

 

As for Bradley, outside of a strong August, his numbers were terrible, and he has shown no sign of being able to hit MLB pitching.

 

Only Betts and Bogaerts have the best chance of improving. As for Swihart, that will depend on his defense improving.. he's been able to hit, but he was near the top in passed balls, and his defensive metrics were not that good. And of course, HanRam and Sandoval will continue to be an anchor weighing down the Sox... there's also a bigger risk that Ortiz declines in his final season, which would put Boston in serious trouble, as he was the only big power bat in their lineup last season (not convinced with Travis Shaw, especially considering he's blocked by HanRam.)

 

And the bullpen needs major improvement.. it wasn't just the bad starting pitching hurting them most of the season, it was the bullpen costing them games. Kimbrel is not enough.

Ortiz (16m) and Buchholz (13m) are off the books next season. Thats David Price money they can and probably will spend on an Offensive Threat with Dumbrowski. Only thing is the`y will undoubtable put Hanram at DH after they realized what a failed experiment it was for him at first base. So they will want 1st base offense with good defense so they dont have a repeat of 2016. Only guy that somewhat fits that profile is Moreland and he will be a far cry from Ortiz.

 

Their OF will be crowded and the INF are spoken for so there wouldn`t really be anywhere else to plug in a FA.

And yet the Sox have usually found ways to be relevant over the last 15 years despite all of these signings, mostly because they also know how to draft well. The Jays could easily do the same if they wanted to, but their mediocre drafting history other than year 1 of AA's tenure means they and some of the fans around here have to give too much of a s*** about $/WAR and contract value, in which case you end up with your own short term windows where you might be lucky to get a superstar who kills it for 5 years upon entering the majors until they leave in free agency, a few good players who kill it for maybe 2-3 years after some development in the bigs upon which they also leave in free agency and maybe some decent value signings/trades, a perfect formula for sustainable mediocrity where you basically rely on killing the draft every year.

I'd be surprised if he got 5, he'll be 36 going into the 2017 season, and probably need to be a DH at some point during the contract.

 

I also see a front loaded contract, something like 20x20x18x15? I don't think he gets over 20 as he'll probably be limited to a few AL teams, and nobody will want to have a 39 year old DH locked up for 25 million.

This if hilarious but I have to admit I do the same thing. I just have no appetite for telling people why I think everything they believe about baseball is wrong and that would pretty much be the starting point for a any meaningful conversation.
