Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Good move Two down, one to go With a lefty now in the rotation, Iwakuma on 2+1 deal pls Stro Kuma Dickey Estrada Happ Depth - Chavez (swinger), Hutch, Sanchez
nonamejays Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 And yet you voted "good". You were beside yourself in the other thread. If there was a meh option, I would have selected it. Happ isn't garbage and a 12 per contract is okay. The problem has to do with the fact that he isn't what this team needs. They already have plenty of bottom of the rotation guys. They needed someone they could rely on as a #2/3 guy at least to take some pressure off everyone else. Instead we're stuck with 4 #4/5 guys. That's fine I guess, the bullpen is going to be really busy this year, but as a whole, the direction this team is taking is garbage considering where the team is currently in their form. The Jays should be in contender mode because of the fact the team is one year away from losing two of its key pieces. They need to attempt to go for it. Instead they waffle again like they always do. Safe, low risk moves, that are merely acceptable rather than what is actually needed.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I would vote yes it's a good trade with the stipulations that another trade and /or a free agent to essentially be a better #2 then I personally don't give a shot about payroll flexibility. I want a ring

I want a ring Fans don't get rings, sorry to break it to you. Here's a decent deal on a pair of replica rings. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-art-collectibles/st-catharines/blue-jays-world-series-rings/1118339689?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
MusicaEsLivida Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I believe a good signing. A lefty that could succeed very well in this line up. i liked him here before and believe both he improved and we have improved. kudos
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 he seems to be a good 2nd half pitcher. maybe he'll be good in the playoffs too.

So you want to see them turn into the Phillies then? We need sustainable success after 20+ years of general mediocrity/garbage.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I voted bad, but the move could really go either way as of now. I just think we could have done better with the money.

We need sustainable success after 20+ years of general mediocrity/garbage. I was hoping for someone more on the level of Zimmerman/Iwakuma, a #2/3 guy. Probably could get one of them for 3-4 years. I didn't want Price unless it was for 150-170/7 not the 200 that has been rumoured. I don't particularly want the Jays to re-sign Bautista or EE unless it's for 3 years or less. Basically ride out the Martin/Tulo/Donaldson years with competitive talent.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Given our lineup and the likely hood that we add another 2 solid arms to our pen, the question becomes can the Jays win more often than not with Happ on the mound? From where I stand that's a yes, for that fact and the relatively cost friendly contract, this is looking like a very solid move. No need to break the bank on potentially franchise crippling contracts when we already have the best lineup in baseball and a few cost efficient signings can keep us in contention for the division.
BigRed Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Im still on the fence. I loved Happ when he was here before, but at 12M? I guess it still has value, but to me it seems like sailing a white flag on Price, or even a Zimmermann/Shark type guy.

Let some other team give Price a contract that gambles with their franchise future. Shapiro understands we need to win now but is also thinking about the future. He may very well be the guy to keep this team relevant for the next decade with this sound logic.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 No ofcourse not Facing a DH like Edwin Encarnacion or David Ortiz is the same thing as facing a pitcher that can barely hold the bat Sigh. Agree. Happ is going to be the only starter in AL who will face DH hitters.

No offense but this is a type of deal I feel Ricciardi would have made. Nothing special about it. Shapiro still has a lot to prove.
DerangedIdoit Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 So you want to see them turn into the Phillies then? We need sustainable success after 20+ years of general mediocrity/garbage. You can put all your effort into drafting, have the sharpest most astute scouts in baseball and still only end up fielding above average teams that were always the underdogs and never really were considered championship caliber. We may end up developing plenty of good players but never all in the same window. We actually have a legitimate shot to be the favourites to win the Pennant. We are pot committed. You dont know when we will get another shot like this. It is really hard to accomplish, it may end up being another 22 years. ` Plus the Phillies are retarded. You can put together talented teams without going to that level of insanity. There will be some sacrifice though.

JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 After reading this: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/lets-try-to-make-sense-of-j-a-happ/ I am leaning more in favor of the signing although I was not happy with him when pitching for us. Seems like he got his s*** together. It could be a great signing, willing to give him a chance.

Followthelight Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 It's not a bad signing in of itself, but overall when your 2 biggest signings are chavez and happ when we need a good #2, and possibly a #1 starter it's bad.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 With no context, this is a mediocre move. Three years @ $12M for a mid-tier starter. This is the type of deal you do in February when you have no other options, not jump on the chance in November. But within the context, I like this move. When Happ wasn't injured he was decent here, better than his time in Houston. And in Pittsburgh he showed further improvement. He has the stuff to be a good MLB pitcher and maybe he learned something with the Pirates. It's worth a shot that he could be a late bloomer, especially with this offense where the Jays just need 200 IP of 4 to 4.50 ERA to win 55% of a pitcher's starts. This is the second time now where this team aggressively acquired Happ. The Jays must have someone in this organization who likes him.

Voted good. Hoping for 2 WAR from him. It's a meh depth signing we may regret over the 3 years but given what it looks like the market for SPs is, it's not an overpay (which still shocks me when I see Happ getting 3/36). A couple yrs ago we were passing hats in the clubhouse for a SP on a 1 year deal.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 This isn't the Happ we're all remembering. Even the Happ we all remember was a decent starter who never had arm problems. This Happ put up 2.2 WAR the last 2 months of the season. This Happ has ace upside for 12 million dollars a year. This is a great signing.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Was it a great move?...No Was it a good move?...No Was it a bad move?...No Was it a necessary move?....YES! Therefore I voted yes. and soooo much for the whining and complaining by some players of the difficulty of living in a foreign country and having to go through customs all the time.
Followthelight Verified Member Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Chavez was traded for. Don't blur facts now Yes my bad, but we gave up a good piece which opens up another hole. With the moves we are left with a budget pitching staff, and no money to really improve outside another trade.
