Anyone else do those math contests in high school and get offered a token scholarship from Waterloo? I thought 5 grand was a lot at age 16 until I realized that didn't even cover a meal allowance and textbooks.

Could add up if it's stackable with an entrance scholarship. 2,000 x 4 years + that 5,000 would be like a 50% ride (for tuition only).

I believe it was, but money was tight and I've had my heart set on Entomology field work since I was a child so I started with my B.Sc at a local University.

Yeah staying local is worth a lot more $$ than 5,000, probably. Also bugs r kewl

He might play one on the internet though. It is difficult to stay in the Bachelors of Mathemetics program. Waterloo tends to weed people out very quickly out of that program. True idiots with degrees come from the social sciences specifically those in Economics in my experience.

EMK19 Verified Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 I keep tabs on the KBO and IMO Lee Dae Ho is a much better overall hitter, and has proven himself more with his successful couple years in Japan. Park's power won't transition over here as a 1B IMO, Nexen's now former home park Mokdong stadium (used to watch games there often when I teached there) is known to be incredibly HR friendly. Both are liabilities in defence though, especially Lee. I don't think either will adapt to MLB as quickly and as well as Kang did. Park does have the age advantage though, Lee will only be good for couple years or so. I personally see no reason why Jays would get either player, our 1B/DH spot is already crammed as it is.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Work ethic is a skill though because not everyone has it- Jack Armstrong. Work ethic is a skill. The issue was whether a degree(s) equated to someone being very smart. It can. But not necessarily. Don't know about anyone else but some of the smartest guys I knew at Univ didn't make it through their degrees because they were baked every day and/or partied too much. Didn't have the work ethic or had other issues.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Hearing baseball get the Soccer treatment is weird with the British play by play and no colour person is weird but I'm not sure it's a bad thing. Through the first 4 innings I'm willing to anoint Otani (although his jersey says Ohtani) the next one, although it was mostly fastballs. The Korean pitcher KH Kim reminds me a lot of Chen. Lefty sitting low 90's with a good mix, got a lot of swing and misses.

Heck, my IQ is in that range and I can't even begin to understand some of the more advanced concepts in things like quantum physics. People in that field have unique gifts and there's something to be said for innate intelligence, though I'm certainly biased in this discussion.

That Korean pitcher, Kim Kwang Hyun, is pretty much a two pitch pitcher, fastball and slider, so yeah he's somewhat like Chen but he is also pretty frail mentally under pressure and inconsistent. Having watched him over the years IMO he's not that special of a pitcher, nowhere near the quality of someone like Ryu. I believe Kim went on the posting market last year and only the Padres showed any real interest in him, and wouldn't guarantee him a spot on the MLB roster, so he stayed put. Overall he's a reliever at best at MLB level IMO. That Otani sure looks a real deal though, electric arm and a plus splitter.

I thought the wipeout slider Kim threw to LHP was fantastic though. He did struggle once they got to him in the 2nd. Finally got out of it with a pick off. I can see him being a solid loogy though. As for Otani, this announcer keeps calling that splitter a knuckle curve...it's an amazing pitch though.

I do think he'd be a solid reliever here, his two pitches are good enough and his delivery has great deception vs. lefties. But I guess his pride as a starter wouldn't allow it as he's been top of the rotation guy at KBO for years. I think it also had a lot to do with another Korean pitcher Yoon Suk-Min few years ago who was an ace level starter at KBO but failed miserably in the minors after he signed with the O's and never got the bigs. Park went 2-4, his double vs Otani was a lucky blooper but he did have a solid single in the 8th.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 The guy had 1100 posts. I can't tell the difference between half of the f***ers around here. I see people getting response, immediate response should be that they aren't trolls. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing someone respond to someone and say "troll...dogg...CHP...King...Metalijay...whoever else we have had". There are two ways to deal with a troll...don't respond or respond with intelligent material changing their non subject. It seems like the only way people learn this is to ban/warn those that respond. If not we'll instruct the mods that anyone getting responses from "legitimate" posters, will also be considered legitimate posters. So the people "trolling" in your opinion are just really f***ing stupid posters?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Things you never hear. Not a heckuvalot going on up in the Soo
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Not a heckuvalot going on up in the Soo Just perfect for a guy who likes being outdoors. I'd never be happy in a shithole like Hamilton.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 So the people "trolling" in your opinion are just really f***ing stupid posters? no I'm saying mods can't stop the trolling so it's up to the f***ing posters to do it. Why can't anyone figure that out. Unless we want to become O's Hangout and have to go through fraternity type pledging to get membership, they are just going to start up with a new name. It's a bigger pain in the ass to stop them. If supposedly good posters just didn't respond...they would go away. I understand that trolls are supposed to draw people into bad discussions, it is what they do. However, it's easy enough to stop. The same 5 or 6 people are f***ing OBSESSED with identifying every new poster or potential troll. They can't help themselves. it's the same 5 to 10 posters every single time. So it's tough to get rid of the trolls...time outs for those that respond (I'm not talking about those that legitimately fall into the trap...I'm talking about those that respond knowing that it's a troll....LET IT f***ING GO. Dogg is supposed to be the biggest evil in the Blue Jay message board community and he's posted without any damage for over a year and half. We had exactly one reported post on him before people knew he was the Dogg...now RealAccountant gets a few a month. The problem at that point becomes the supposedly legit posters. I'm not answering this again. My next bannings are going to be for people who can't get my uncommon sense.

I wasn't knocking the Soo. But really there can't be a lot going on up there. As for Hamilton being a shithole, yep it is. Inept City Councils for over 100 years. And the City has this mentality that I hate, "the hand out, woe is us" But my family & job are here, and I hate commuting.
