Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Pretty good comp to the recently traded Mike Foltynewicz (him + Rio Ruiz fetched Evan Gattis). Gattis sucked in 2015 but at the time of the trade he was a league average (ish) bat with a few years of control left. Sanchez could probably fetch something of similar value. s***, I didn't realize how mediocre Gattis was this year.

Folty is a great comp to Sanchez, although he throws a deeper arsenal with a less effective fastball than Aaron. I see no reason to trade Sanchez for the sake of trading him, his value will bring shiat in return and there is still the possibility he develops into a semi decent starter.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Welp, looks like the Royals will officially be keeping the whole team through 2017 and beyond. Nope. Not happening. Unless KC wants to pay upwards of $70-80M for 4 players (Escobar, Moustakas, Cain, Hosmer), at least two of those players will be traded away after the 2016 season (if not sooner). And of course, Gordon's expected to get a massive raise and expected to leave KC. Those lousy Vargas and Infante deals don't help. And Moustakas, Cain and Hosmer are expected to get significant raises.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I hate the comparison to the phillies....jose bautista and edwin encarnacion are much more like big papi in terms of their hitting abilities than Ryan Howard. Both those two are going to hit well into their late 30s....Encarnacion rarely strikes out...if he didn't have to play april he might strike out less than 10% of the time. The phillies had almost no young talent...the Jays have pillar, Stroman, Osuna, Sanchez, Travis.....what the hell did the 2013, 2014, 2015 Phillies have for young talent? It's not so much a talent comparison it's moreso a comparison of keeping an aging core ot talent together with large money deals that tum into awful situations in the blink if an eye that can completely kill a team for years. I'm not saying they have to immediately trade Jose or Edwin, just that they need to be willing to them go because theres no way they can sign them both to extensions at market rate deals and then have 4 players eating 80+ milion of payroll space in 2017 and beyond when this team has historically not been one thats going to be pushing up against the luxury tax.

Agree, the comparison to the Phillies is ridiculous. They had Brown (ended up busting), and have Franco and Nola. Crawford is still not close, I think that's all they have. The Jays are in a much better position and after next season have a lot off the books.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Nah, the Phillies are in a great position going forward. They're finally clearing the expensive vets off their payroll and have a bunch of interesting young players. The prospects they got from the Rangers are legit. Crawford is nice, they have the #1 pick and huge revenue potential. The comparison people are making is to the 2012-2014 Phillies, not the current Phillies. I meant the 2012-2014 Phillies, when they had Franco as their only legit prospect waiting IIRC. Brown was their only good young talent and ended up having 1 good season and then turning into nothing. The Jays are nowhere near that.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I think using "healthy" in the title thread is appropriate. Jays older talent health (much like this season) will determine their success (I don't care who they sign, they aren't going to win boatloads of games based on their pitching). They got way more games out of EE, JB and Reyes/Tulo than I anticipated this year. Another healthy season for those three and I don't see the Jays not being in the playoffs again. You know that's painful for me to write.

I think the fear is that EE and JB are given free agent deals that lead the Jays to that point moving forward. Tulo will be a black hole contract soon enough. And there is very little making it's way through the pipe. JD is great through the finish of his contract. Pillar looks solid, Travis if healthy. Alford/Pompey are still question marks and after that it's Vlad Jr...probably 5 years to know if he's anything.

Not trying to be a dick at all, just genuinely curious. If you were a fan at one point, what changed that?

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 These are valid points. After 2016 is does get dicey. They're going to have to choose between Edwin and Jose to be frank, and with Edwin being younger and more likely to sign an extension you can bet your bottom dollar they'll keep Edwin. I'd like to see both moved if they agree to waive their 10/5 rights. That way there's no old bad money. And as meaningless as this is, the fans will only have a short band aid ripped off to be upset if they're both moved.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I'm hoping somehow Dickey isn't retained. As much as I dislike Dickey. I'd rather play it safe and bring him back for his final year on the Team Option. The SP depth as it stands is horrendous. Too much has to be done just to piece a rotation together at this point.

But why anchor yourselves to old players on contracts that will likely exceed 20m per year per guy? Edwin is a DH at best and Jose is lucky he improvises well in the OF, because it's ugly watching him play it. So all you're paying for is their bats.

Not sure why you want to worsen the team's chances at competing next year. As it stands the blue jays are the AL East favourites but if you trade EE and Jose the team turns into a 85-87 win team. I have a hard time seeing them waive their NTC to leave as well.

He's not going to demand a 6 year deal.
