Shapiro is a genius.

His numbers don't look like he has a terrible swing. He struck out less then 100 times the last couple of years.

The only problem is he hits about half as many homeruns as you'd expect from a guy 6'5" 250.

His first three years he was exactly where you'd expect. Then he lost half his homeruns... not sure what happened.

Exactly my point. He has elite skills as he doesn't strike out much. If his overall swing was better he would be a 30 HR guy because he has the raw power. From what I've read his arms are very stiff and he really struggles with pitches on the inner half of the plate.

He also hit 57% Groundballs last year which is not ideal by any means.

Maybe a bad idea... naively I figure someone just has to yell at Heyward until he starts cranking a few more balls over the fence... seems Cito would be that guy...

What is the issue with Heyward anyway? To many ground balls?? How does a guy that size have the same power numbers as Kevin Pillar??

He really does have the same power numbers as Kevin Pillar ~ 30 doubles, 12 homers in 570 at bats the last 2 years

I think you're going to miss Cito and Beest the most on this board?

So you're saying Pompey should have scored!! I'm sold.

Wow, Shapiro pushing all the right buttons. Four great moves.

No trade Jose+ or Edwin+ for Carrasco, and Revere for pitching

I really hate the Dickey option, 12M for innings? Very average innings at that.

It's more like 11M because we would have been out a 1M buyout. And I feel 11M for 200 innings of average innings is fair. How much would it cost to sign a free agent pitcher, one that you know will give you what Dickey can give you.

Makes some sense. Miggy with his ankle, Big Papi with his achilles, Pujols with planter fasc. These are big boys, but you can only imagine that the more weight your putting on your lower body, the higher chance of injuries.

Heyward isn't built like these guys at all though.

I don't really follow your more weight the more stress on your lower half thought? Unless you expect him to turn into Prince Fielder that logic is extremely flawed. 250 and 6'5 is a lot different than 250 and 6'2.

Average innings have value, lol.

If they didn't pick up the option then they'd just have to buy innings in FA anyway. You can't get 200+ virtually guaranteed innings in free agency for that amount of money. Not a chance.

Philadelphia declined Cliff's option.

How much would it take to sign Cliff Lee? What is the state of his health right now?

Seems like a match made in heaven. He's got a wide open rotation that will probably have a spot for him all season long, the team will have the funds to offer him an incentive laden contract, and the team has World Series aspirations so if he's healthy or if he gets healthy, it would be a huge addition much like Price and Stroman were this year.

Also, Shapiro and LaCava connections! Shapiro trade Colon for Cliff way back in the day. Shapiro was GM the entire time Cliff was an Indian. LaCava was with Cleveland back when they traded for Lee and had "significant input" on his acquisition.

please please please

I cannot think of another fit that's even close to this good, for Lee (unless retirement is in the cards).

If he was a conventional pitcher I'd have no problem with it but I have a hard time stomaching the personal catcher ********, inconsistency of the knuckleball and the general sideshow that is RA Dickey. I'm just a Dickey hater, whatever.

How many days did Thole even have on the active roster this year? I don't see the personal catcher thing as a big deal anymore. They even have the opportunity to sign a capable backup that can do a little bit more than call a game and eat cheese strings.

The direct comparison is Colon vs Dickey, since Colon is a free agent. That's the choice.

EVEN IF they both would sign here, I'd prefer Dickey because the knuckleball is almost ageless and Colon is a terrible bet to stay healthy, despite his past couple of years.

But in actuality the choice is get Dickey's guaranteed innings or attempt to woo Colon to Toronto. So it's not even a choice. There is no choice. The chance that Bartolo would sign here for one year is probably miniscule. It's retain Dickey, or give Mike Leake 40 million dollars, or go hunting through the bargain bin and hope that Trevor Cahill etc. can recapture the magic.

Isn't his elbow done? I think he's retiring since he never got TJS so my guess is his elbow just magically didn't get better.

He took the rehab route and was throwing sessions before the end of last season.

He rehabbed it last year. It's a torn flexor tendon, not the UCL. There haven't been any updates on his rehab since like June. Obviously if he's not healthy enough to pitch then he'll retire.

I'm on board, his peripherals have actually improved with age, especially his K/9, which is incredible. Shapiro's would have sway with him as well, one would think?

Even if he did come back I doubt he would ever sign in Toronto. He turned down over 20 million to go to Philly instead of NY because of his family so him going to a different country for $5 million seems very unlikely.
