Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Apparently we signed Luis Hurtado to a MiLB contract on November 11th. Can someone tell me who the f*** Luis Hurtado is? Backup C for our Las Vegas AAA team and....retired? Now he's back I guess, but he was never any good.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Apparently we signed Luis Hurtado to a MiLB contract on November 11th. Can someone tell me who the f*** Luis Hurtado is? Someone who was in the system from 2006 to 2012 and had a 541 OPS across all levels. Maybe the like something about his receiving skills or perhaps more likely they expected to need someone to fill a backup catcher role in one of the leagues and his name came up.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 Yeah, weird that he fell off the map after 2012. Also funny that the team's transaction page has updated the Chavez trade but has nothing about the apparent Humberto Quintero signing.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 league min That is what i assumed initially but i started thinking it might be more for a premium position. My next next question is whether the 9 million/war that Shapiro uses is for SP FA is accounts for the replacement cost of filling the roster spot?

I'm not sure that there is much of a practical use for that number, however.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I would think so, yes. I'm not sure that there is much of a practical use for that number, however. So lets say you need to fill 2 roster spots and hope to get 2 WAR worth of pitching (keeping #s small to keep the example simple). You can sign a 2 WAR FA at 18 million and fill the other spot with a replacement level at $500k. Or you sign two 1 WAR FA at 9 million each. Save $500,000?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Bob Nightengale The #Dodgers, in their quest for marquee starting pitching, have identified free agent Jordan Zimmermann as one of their top targets. Great news for the Jays fans. Zimm is a time bomb

I'm not sure how often that type of decision presents itself.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Theoretically true, yes. I'm not sure how often that type of decision presents itself. I guess it just adds to my budding opinion that if you have 2 roster spots to fill, signing a (2x)war pitcher is less valuable than 2 (x)war pitchers. Risk of injury being the foremost consideration.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I could see a rebuilding team like the Phillies taking him. meh. I'm not sold he's more than a replacement level player in 2016.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Apparently we signed Luis Hurtado to a MiLB contract on November 11th. Can someone tell me who the f*** Luis Hurtado is? He's a coach for our Gulf Coast/Dominican Summer league teams.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 He's a coach for our Gulf Coast/Dominican Summer league teams. Wat. Is he actually going to play next year?
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Wat. Is he actually going to play next year? No, he's a coach. He had the same role in 2015, he was placed on the disabled list for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (AA) for the season.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 No, he's a coach. He had the same role in 2015, he was placed on the disabled list for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (AA) for the season. I don't get it. Why is he being treated differently than other coaches?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I don't get it. Why is he being treated differently than other coaches? Maybe the pay is better?
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 If he's signed to a minor league contract getting payed like a minor league player I would have to think it's worse..
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 So apparently on PTS today one of the idiots actually said a team source told them the plan was to have Goins start at SS in 2017 and shift Tulo to 1B. I don't believe it for a second but find it hilarious why someone would even think of this.

Than move him to a much less premium position while paying him 20 million. Apparently whoever stated this has not heard of Rowdy Tellez. What part of "Ryan Goins is more John MacDonald than Troy Tulowitzki", do people not understand?
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 Well it kind of does make sense because we have a giant hole at 1B whereas Goins can slide into Tulo's spot at SS and Pendleton can fill Travis' spot at 2B quite nicely. It's easy to forget about Pendleton. He really does change the entire dynamic of the team.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Wow. Actually listened to it live and its worse than I thought. Not only did the guy say he heard Tulo would move to 1st base but then Jeff Blair said "I'm not sure Tulo has enough power to play 1st Base". 5 Min earlier Michael Grange said he wouldn't sign Donaldson to 6/130 either lmao. http://www.sportsnet.ca/590/prime-time-sports/ Around the 30 min mark of the 5PM hour.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I'm pretty sure this idea came from Jerry Howarth during one of the games, I was listening to the radio at the time.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 A lot of dumb folks on sportnet. Guys I use to follow on a daily basis 7-10 years ago. Thank god my love for baseball allowed me to progress.
