What do you classify as a $70 asset, like a 5-6 WAR pitcher? Could that get us Carrasco or Ross?

A $70 asset is what I call BTS' mom.

A $70m asset comes in all different shapes and sizes! Value can be tied to length of control or it can come from pure skill. Carrasco is like a $145m type guy (I only know that off hand since I did it the other day); he's controllable, cheap, and a demigod. Ross, however, is probably a $20m asset; He's great, but only one year of control left. He's very close in value to Bautista and Edwin(did this the other day too).

I'm not sure off hand who's a $70m type. Just off hand, I don't think it's quite enough for Quintana but I think the White Sox would probably consider it. I'd do that without a second thought. Maybe a guy like Lance Lynn, Garrett Richards or Kyle Hendricks but I don't think the needs match up there. Julio Teheran's actual value likely lies around $70m, but I think the Braves hold for an overpayment. *Maybe* Danny Salazar would come out around $70m+ but I doubt it, probably closer to $90-100m.

I dunno, it's an awkward fit. Also not many rebuilding teams right now. Maybe you could add a whole lot more for Sunny Gray but he's f***ing valuable lol.

@Buster_ESPN: Home runs the last four years for the St. Louis first basemen, combined: 78. Chris Davis: 159. He would help fix their power issues.

Hmmm, who could the Jays convince to waive a no trade clause to go to St Louis who also plays first base and has power.

Now what pitcher could we get back?

Thanks man.

I wonder if we could see another lopsided Donaldson type trade again this off-season, and if we could, I wonder which teams would be most likely to provide that? I'm thinking Colorado/Arizona/San Diego could be had. If Ross is just a $20m asset, what would that even cost us, Revere and Sanchez?

Pompey-Pillar-Heyward left to right would be a great outfield defense. Then if/when Alford becomes a realistic option to push one of them out, you can decide between Pompey and Pillar from there (preferably Pompey).

Damn you guys, you got me thinking we have a shot at Heyward and I know it's not going to happen. Surprise me, Shapiro.

I'm just wondering how you plan on fitting in Heyward + 2 top end starters + bp arm into a 135-140m budget

Back load Heyward's deal, trade Bautista for high level prospects, don't sign "top end" starters (sign Kaz and Hill instead), trade Revere+ for Chapman (only 1-yr of control), and sign cheap BP arms like Lowe and Bastardo.

Starting Rotation:

1) Stroman

2) Kazmir

3) Dickey

4) Hill

5) Osuna/Sanchez/Hutch (losers goes to AAA to start or long-man role)

Bullpen:

CL) Chapman

SU) Cecil

3) Hendriks

4) Bastardo

5) Lowe

6) Maybe Hutch?

7) etc.

Lineup:

1) Travis

2) Heyward

3) JD

4) Edwin

5) Tulo

6) Cola

7) Martin

8) Pillar

9) Pompey

Right now, we are looking at Stroman + Dickey + maybe hutch. Kaz/Hill are not enough in my opinion to get this team to the playoffs next year. Yanks/Red sox will get better, Boston will add a #1 pitcher and NYY too. I can also see Boston starting to swap prospects for more established players as they will tweak their lineup to get back into contention. This team needs a legit #2, Kazmir is way too inconsistent. This team had good hitting this year, and it still wasn't enough to win it all.

I think Kaz and Hill play pretty good against NY's lefty dominant lineup, and should be decent enough against Boston. Maybe sign Iwakuma instead of Kaz and see if you can baffle teams with another Estrada type season? I don't think we need a Price/Zimmer/Grienke to win with this lineup and defense.

But if you're worried maybe a package of Bautista/Pillar/+ could net us Carrasco? Then use the $12m saved from Bautista plus current room to sign Price/Zimmer/Grienke.

Yeah.. Revere won't get you much and sure as heck not Chapman. It'd likely take one of Osuna / Sanchez and one of Pompey / Alfrod and maybe another throw in piece here and there. Plus I doubt the Jays would have the best package or even go after Chapman. I don't see Shapiro going after players with 1 year of control while giving up multiple years of control of MLB ready prospects.

You sure about that? Chapman has an expensive AAV and only 1 year of control. Revere and a low-level prospect like Urena probably gets it done with no issue. There's no way it would take all of that LOL, that's crazy.

Its the same idiot who proposed Dickey + Revere for Tyson Ross, if that tells you anything.

I said Dickey/Revere/"+", which could be someone like Greene or SRF, GD did an analysis and already determined that Ross is only a $20m asset so he's not nearly as expensive as you think.

I think I too made that proposal too!.... But in jest. Lol. NJH (?) had a article on breakingblue in regards to Revere's trade possibilities which I though was great! Loved the Chavez idea from Athletics but knowing Bean he'd likely prefer prospects with more control.

What would Cincinnati do with Revere? Consider too what Toronto gave up for Revere at the deadline.

The cheap control of Revere plus whatever prospect we include could match the expected price tag. Cinci has Chapman for only 1 more year and arb3 could take him into the $10-12m range for that year. That would make him less valuable.

More correctly, I think, if the Reds trade Chapman someone like Revere just would not be the type of player they would be looking for, at all. They are in rebuild mode and they'd want a top prospect.

Chapman is still an asset vs. his salary, but if they trade him before the season then you also need to factor in the value of the QO compensation pick that he will almost certainly land a team next offseason. So Chapman could carry a lot of trade value this offseason, especially to teams that are high on the win curve. Chapman for a top hitting prospect in the #26-50 range, or a top pitching prospect in the #11-25 range, would probably be a fair deal.

So a fair deal on paper might be Pompey straight up for Chapman.

Thanks for that. I think I'd consider Pompey for Chapman.

I wouldn't. It just doesn't align with the team needs right now, and my ideal offseason would involve getting rid of Revere and anointing Pompey the starting LF.

I would rather do that but I don't want Osuna wasting another year of development as the closer, and I don't trust Sanchez (and his 1 controllable pitch) as our closer.

Sanchez set up

Cecil close

sign an RP or two

That sounds acceptable, but what happens if Cecil is inconsistent again in that role? I suppose Hendriks could work (great FIP and K/9 this year)?

I'd rather Sanchez go to AAA with some of Shapiro's development coaches to try and fix his command, and attempt the near impossible task of making him more saber friendly.

Remember that half a season of Andrew Miller returned Eduardo Rodriguez. Chapman is one of the most skilled pitchers in baseball, Cincinnati will surely look for a significant return for him.

Yeah I would trade him in a package for a SP or try and get a position player prospect. I have a hard time seeing him turning into a successful starter even if it could happen. Sign a Mark Lowe for $10 million and maybe a Blanton type for the pen and you could replace him.

This sounds ideal, maybe use him in a package for Ross? GD has Ross valued around $20m so it shouldn't be too pricey, if that's accurate.

Yeah man, Sanchez + Revere for Ross should get it done, Genius!
