Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Aaaaand he's now with the Braves as of today. Good this is how prospect progression should be. I always thought it was stupid to hold pitchers in the minors unless they struggle to throw strikes. If they are dominanting move them. No reason to waste bullets and what could be some of the best years of their career.

Probably seeing more of this these days because of the inherent injury risks, but I'm sure they're also metrics beyond public stuff to really feel like they are ready for the jump. The reason I think this is reinforced by the TJ Brock promotion recently - TJ Brock (23 yo): 20.1 IP, 13.72 K/9, 3.98 BB/9, xFIP 3.39, ERA 1.77 So decent numbers but is 4 BB/9 really all that impressive? Not really, so there must be other things in play.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Went to see two Dunedin Blue Jays games over the weekend at TD Ballpark in Dunedin. Great place to chill, relax and watch baseball. Prices are only $8 and pretty much could sit anywhere in the ballpark. They have great promotions during the week. $2 tickets for Wednesday, $1 beer on Thursday, Two for One Margaritas on Friday, and on Sunday $2 Mimosas and Seltzers haha. Overall prices even for concessions and other drinks aren't that expensive. Saw Manuel Beltre hit a 2 run HR on Sunday haha.

Man - this sounds like a retirement dream to me.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Damiano Palmegiani with a nice start in AA.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 f***, that sounds amazing Yeah definitely want to go down one spring to see the Jays at Spring Training. Dunedin is a really great town. Can also see the Phillies Single A team in Clearwater which is like 15 mins from TD Ballpark. Definitely want to visit some more minor league ballparks this summer, like some Double A or Triple A parks in the northeast.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 It's american beer though... slight downside I didn't go on Thursday but yeah it's probably Bud Light or something haha. They did have a wide selection of other beers at the ballpark though. Beers were like $6-7 I recall. Dunedin and the whole Clearwater area have so many craft breweries all around. It's really cool.

Yeha I went down for spring training a few years ago for about a week, saw a few games in Dunedin and 1 in Bradenton (pirates), really nice parks.

Twins park in Fort Myers is really nice. I went to JetBlue (Fenway replica) like 11 years ago and would like to go again. I also want to check out the new Braves park in North Port. I hear it's really good. The park in Port Charlotte (Rays) is one I've been to 20+ times and always enjoy. G-Snarls (or at least I think it was G-Snarls) and I caught a game in Sarasota years ago and had a beer together. Another good park. To be honest - I think all the spring training parks are pretty solid. Always enjoy myself and love travelling around to see the different parks with my boys.

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels were playing the Dunedin Jays last weekend haha. Yeah there are so many great minor league/Spring Training ballparks in Florida, all within a close distance. Great for family excursions and won't break the bank at all in comparison to seeing some MLB games.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I wasn't aware robo umps being used in AAA until reading the below in BA. Numbers are interesting, and probably similar differences across the board, not just EDLA. But there's one more complicating factor. Triple-A is using automated ball-strikes (ABS) where on Tuesday-Thursday games, all pitches are called by the computer. On Friday-Sunday, umpires call balls and strikes, but hitters, pitchers and catchers can challenge any pitch, with each team allowed three unsuccessful challenges. And one could say that most of De La Cruz's improvement has come with the ABS system. Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday (ABS) 69 PAs, 12 BBs (17.4%) 69 PAs, 18 Ks (26.1%) Friday-Saturday-Sunday (Challenge System) 75 PAs, 8 BBs (10.6%) 75 PAs, 24 Ks (32%)

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Faced 5 batters, struck out 2 (looking and swinging) 2 flyouts and 1 solo HR given up. Bowden Francis started, went 4.2 giving up 7 hits, 1 walk, 4 K - 74 pitches.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 The AA starting pitching crop: Tiedemann (20) - 12.2 IP - 16.34 K/9 - 4.9 BB/9 - 2.08 xFIP Kloffenstein (22) - 46.0 IP - 11.54 K/9 - 3.52 BB/9 - 3.14 xFIP Robberse (21) - 43.2 IP - 9.69 K/9 - 3.65 BB/9 - 4.00 xFIP Schultz (25) - 41.1 IP - 9.80 K/9 - 3.92 BB/9 - 4.00 xFIP Dallas (23) - 12.0 IP - 9.75 K/9 - 1.75 BB/9 - 2.55 xFIP
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Zulueta pitched an inning tonight and K'ed three batters. He also walked three batters lol He's been one of my biggest disappointments this season in the Minor League system. Went from hoping he'd be a starter option to wondering if he can even be an effective reliever. 8.39 BB/9 is just friggin putrid.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Mitch White continuing to get shelled in AAA. 1.1IP 4H 4ER 1BB 2K 0HRA
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Jays couldn't just leave the Stripling trade with the Dodgers as a clear win, they had to even things up by pulling the White trade haha
spats Verified Member Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 Orelvis with another homerun tonight. T.J. Brock with a 108 era. Wow.
spats Verified Member Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 A buck a beer? Was Ford at the game? Man - this sounds like a retirement dream to me. It is a retirement dream. I have been going down for the month of April for the last several years. Nothing beats minor league ball.

I’d argue that Major League ball beats it, but ok sure. Minor league ball definitely has a more tight-knit family/community kinda feel though for sure.
AMS528 Verified Member Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 Well Orelvis Martinez is now slashing 195/299/530. Good for a 113 wRC+. The numbers are way more impressive in the just the past month. Great walk numbers, honestly surprising strikeout numbers. The walks have shot up and the strikeouts have shot down a lot in just the past couple of week. And still just a .143 BABIP. It really looks like if his BABIP was just horrible instead of the worst BABIP ever in baseball, he'd be having the kind of year where he'd be shooting back up the prospect rankings?

I think it's at the point where he IS having that kind of year, despite the batting average. It's not a mirage to pair those K and BB rates with that ISO. He's a freak. They could probably promote him at this point.

Sometimes I think he is older than he actually is because he has been in AA for a couple of years now. He is only 21.

Yeah a month ago I would have laughed if someone said he'd be the starting 3B in 2024. Now I'm kinda expecting it if he gets promoted to AAA soon and looks ok.
