What does Lopez profile even look like at the major league level? Maybe he could be like, Espinal?

He looks like he has a better hit tool than Espinal. I've seen a prospect blurb from earlier this season - apparently his hit tool matches the output so far (ie: he can really hit).

What do you mean by contact first usually translate better to the majors? What does Lopez profile even look like at the major league level? Maybe he could be like, Espinal?

One of the most common reasons a prospect will fail is an inability to make contact. If you can put the bat on the ball you have a chance.

Lopez isn't very similar to Espinal. Better offensive tools across the board but worse defense, apparently. Lopez' ceiling might be more like Marwin Gonzalez.

Fair enough. No arguments from me there. I think will likely be his power that defines his career. If he's just a slap singles guy like Espinal he might just be a bench player.

I saw Otto playing at DWL.

Otto Lopez is a better hitter than Espinal by far, and his defense is average. José Ramirez was a crappy hitter at DWL, but the kid find his MOJO (roids) later

Lopez really chops at the ball - practically swings down at it. He does not try to hit for power from what I've seen.

This isn't a negative so long as he's at least average at multiple positions. It probably makes him more valuable if anything. He's listed as playing 2B/CF and I've yet to read anything that says he's not capable defensively.

Otto Lopez is intriguing, and clearly the Jays value him because they protected him from the Rule 5 last winter. The contact first profile usually ends up translating better in the majors, and you hope he can tap into more power as he grows older. Probably more doubles/gap power than homers. I've always comp'd him to Cesar Hernandez (even though Lopez isn't a switch hitter). That's a useful guy to have on a team.

I more meant that he's likely to end up as a utility player than a regular if he sticks with the Jays. That's still a potentially valuable piece but simply doesn't put him in the same conversation as higher upside talents like Moreno, Martin, Groshans etc.

Samad Taylor turning into a power hitter was a development I wasn't expecting. His K% in June is 23.9%, so he's improving in that area after his big K May. Still only 22. I don't know if the club views him as a potential trade piece or someone they plan to protect in the Rule 5 next season, but he's gone from potential sleeper the past few years to intriguing.

He had pool noodle power in previous years so this is borderline shocking to see.

Every minor leaguer that was ahead of Gabriel Moreno has regressed... except Gabriel Moreno.

He now has the second highest wRC+ in the minors at 204, behind 26-year-old AA player Jacob Robson and the second highest batting average in the minors at .385, behind 28-year-old AAA player James Ritchie.

Moreno's only apparent weakness to this point was his low walk-rate. So he began taking walks. After 4 BBs in 5 plate appearances in yesterday's game, his BB% has climbed to 9.6%, against a 16.3% K%. The walk rate is more than 30% higher than his previous career high

If we are in it come mid July I could see him being a piece to get a big return

How big?

It better be pretty special if you’re giving up Moreno.

Who? Moreno?

Prospects of this caliber don't really get moved that often anymore. If anything, they'd look to dump Jansen and even Kirk before Moreno.

How easily we forget that Kirk tore up the minors (wRC+ in the high 150's) and owns a career wRC+ of 136 at the ML level.

Don't trade Moreno pls I want a good Blue Jays catcher

Nah we keepin him. Hes about to be in Vladdy/Bo company.

Sammy's comment came in the same time mine did so I'm almost certain he was talking about Samad Taylor and not Moreno.

Though I'm not sure how you can expect to get a big return for Samad just yet. Way too early to tell if the breakout is real.

I am NOT talking Moreno. I was talking Taylor. He would be the typical sell high candidate. And we have tones of Infield prospects, we would be better to use him to get pitching help.

We need premium SP and and elite BP help, not sure Samad Taylor would be enough. Sample size too small. As per Laika, he hit for no power prior to this season and was mostly known as a base burner.

I mean I dont think you can fake exit velo. If Taylor is consistently hitting the ball harder than he has in the past and not just hitting wall scraper after wall scraper then the power could be for real. The front office has that type of info and could make the judgement that this is for real.

I would like to see us go have Berrios. Not and premium but sold starting pitcher with Control.

Nobody forgot - it's just that Moreno looks like the better player to "keep". It's the same or better offensive profile with better defensive upside, better athleticism, and considerably less long-term physical risk. Kirk has barely been up at the MLB level and he's already out with a long DL stint, is that shocking for a 5'8 260 pound marshmallow?

It was a hypothetical comment - if it comes down to choosing between those two, I can almost assure yo that the FO would tab Moreno as their guy. Kirk looks like a great player himself, but you're talking about a potential Top 10-15 type prospect in Moreno.
