Alford back on the IL. Every time he has a little bit of success he gets hurt and derailed. .

That’s terrible news. Can’t find this confirmed anywhere though, where did you see this and which IL is it?

Cheers. It says 7 day so hopefully it’s something minor and he can replace McKinney on the 25 man when Alford is back next week.

Every injured player in the minors gets put on the 7-day IL regardless of injury I'm pretty sure. So it's entirely possible that this could be nothing, but also that it's a longterm injury.

Nate Pearson got a bump on MLB Pipeline, Fastball grade now 75.

Fangraphs has him 70 current, 80 future grade.

Pardhino and Maese prompted to Lansing.

Yes, he throws, like, 88-90 MPH, so he's not at all overpowering. He is, however, a very deceptive pitcher - hitters have a hard time picking up the ball out of his hand. I've read that he can really spin his curveball - roughly around 2700 RPM. He has a 2SFB, 4SFB, CB, and CH.

Here's a good write-up on him: https://futurebluejays.com/2019/04/26/fbj-scouting-notes-groshans-kirk-murray/

Thanks! Will give that a read.

I have to admit I’ve only seen him a handful of times, had to go back and compare some notes to make sure info was up to date. Joey is a really interesting pitcher for sure. P2F summarized it up pretty well, I’ll just reiterate a few things.

Joey Murray has been known to throw an “invisi-ball”, it’s a high spin rate (2400+ rpm) fastball with good movement paired with a deceptive delivery. The spin rate makes it just a tad harder for hitters to pick the laces and identify the pitch, but also it rises/elevates on occassion which generates whiffs. Hence it seems “invisible”. This is especially effective because Joey works extremely fast (Mark Buehrle-esque) and comes after hitters repeatedly.

He also has an unique delivery, ultra-high leg lift (like Thornton) but an extreme forward stride while releasing the ball last moment. I think he even deliberately hides the ball behind him. It adds to the deception when paired with how fast he works and the spin rate, while also shortening the distance from mound to plate. He also throws from a high slot. It’s a bit difficult to explain. It’s worked well for him since college, and he has always been a high K rate guy.

He’s a decent size at 6-2 but doesn’t throw high velo. His fastball generally sits 86-89 and touches 91. I have to emphasize he throws a lot of fastballs. But you’d be surprised he sits on a lot of 86-87s but the FB definitely plays up because of all the quirks in his delivery, I’m guessing the hitters feel the same pressure as a 92-93mph FB despite being high-80s.

Pitchers with lower velo tend to have less margin for error, when you miss spots it basically becomes a BP fastball. Guys that can’t get away with elite type stuff generally have to learn how to pitch, by mixing pitches very well, studying hitters, and have plus polish in their command to remain effective.

I hear his changeup has been much improved and has good velo separation, he’s polished it a lot in Lansing and commands it for strikes. The slider has good horizonal break and almost acts like a low-velo cutter. And he has a high rpm curveball which sits mid 70s. His goto secondary back in College and Vancouver was his slider, but now it’s more of a mix including the changeup and curve. If I had to loosely grade his pitches, his FB probably a 50 (45 velo, 60 command/movement), 55-60 slider, 55 curveball, 50 CU. (Might be a tad generous)

The change of speeds, the quirky delivery, the FB spin rates, and multiple secondaries make him a very effective strikeout guy despite the low FB velo. It’s just too bad he’s right handed, scouts would probably be higher on him if he’s a southpaw.

I wouldn’t exactly say Gaviglio, he’s more of a right-handed Buehrle. I honestly have no idea if his stuff will work in the MLB as a starter, probably why he dropped to 8th Rnd despite being very effective in college. He’s always induced a lot of K’s and never had much walk issues, which could mean BP as a plan B, maybe a long relief role. The improved CU also bodes well for his chances.

We’ll see what happens in double-A.

Thanks man. This is great and really informative! Wonder if he's a good case for the Driveline program? Imagine what he'd be sitting low 90s instead of mid-high 80s?

Joey Murray is absolutely carving up the FSL at 22 years old. Top 5 in K-BB% for arms with over 40 IP. Top 3 in ERA.

Things to keep in mind:

- This is entirely age appropriate now. He is a year under the average pitcher's age, and the top hitters in the league are mostly 22/23.

- This league has a .668 OPS so there are lots of pitchers who "dominate" the FSL right now.

So simultaneously the "wait to see if it works in AA" thought is both invalid and valid.

He's now seen more innings at A+ than his previous stop, time for AA.

Alford sucks. I don't understand why this is so important.

As a minimum, shouldn't Alford and even J.Davis be quality 4th OFers? CFers who run like the wind and play all 3 OF positions? If these guys could post wRC+'s in the low 90's, we'd be set.

Saw the following headline and a grin formed on my face...

MLB trade rumors: Yankees may compete with Astros for Marcus Stroman

Didn’t even read the article lol. Whenever a rumour title includes “may”, it’s just click bait. I just let my mind wander as I considered what a bidding war would look like... feel free to join me ....

Not sure why it's so vital for them to get major league playing time in that case.

You just suggested exactly what I hoped would happen. I don’t follow prospects from other teams, so was curious what other have to suggest.

Btw - the article was clickbait. Maybe’s, might’s and possible crap.

Astros have wanted Stroman in the past, and Yankees definitely would want him. So the rumour isn’t exactly out of left field, but a bidding war between the two is difficult to see. There are other teams that wouldn’t mind having a good starter, it only takes two parties.

I’ll bite just for fun, in this case specifically, both farm systems have a crap ton of young assets or prospects to pluck from. You’d have to raise the price tag to NY just because there’s a very real risk that Stroman would re-sign and pitch against us for long term. If you can get like a Jonathan Loaisiga + Deivi Garcia from the Yankees, that would be a haul. Or substitute one for Luis Gil + Albert Abreu or something. Frazier would be fine if he isn’t the only asset coming back, but with Gurriel looking great and Grichuk locked up, one of them has to play CF which makes guys like Teoscar, Alford, and McKinney almost obsolete. I’m not the highest guy on Frazier though, but there’s potential there.

Astros are a bit tricky. The guys you want are untouchable (Whitley, Tucker, Alvarez), their good crop of pitchers coming up seem to be struggling a bit, or moved into the Astros bullpen. Names like Corbin Martin, J.B. Bukauskas, Josh James, Cionel Perez, Framber Valdez, Bryan Abreu, etc. I’m not completely sold on Corbin Martin despite the higher ranking and might lean on Bukauskas just cuz his stuff is so nasty even though his minor league sample isn’t huge. They’d have to add more for Stroman, but I don’t think they’d want him enough to do that.

Okay guys, I am here to officially declare Otto Lopez is not only back in action (after missing time on IL), but he’s currently on a 28 game on-base streak that includes 38 hits and 11 walks that goes all the way back to May 5th. Unlike his fellow teammates Contreras and Abbadessa who ended up a bit too raw offensively despite the athleticism and got sent to Vancouver, Lopez has actually hit very well and carried over his offensive performance from the lower levels.

Not counting today’s game (Too late to update my SS), during the on-base streak he’s hitting .352/.414/.457, OPS .871 and 154 wRC+ since May 5. His seasonal wRC+ is now 131 and still 20 yrs old and playing mostly middle infield. I think we have something here.

Also Jordan Groshans might be coming back sometime in July.

First off we should never Trade with the Yankees ever unless they back the Brinks

Truck up to the door first !!! Or they greatly

Greatly Grreatly overpay with blue chip prospects and Blow us Like 10x Better then all offers on the Table !

Houston same thing to a lesser extent

And I think you can make them pay more if you pawn them with one of the 3 teams I

Think we should be trading with or Stroman

Too and then pawn I guess now the Yankees

Houston and Atlanta into overpaying with prospects to block the Trade from happening

I think the 3 teams WE should target are

As Follows in order too ... Texas, Colorado and Milwaukee!
