Any reports on whether Gurriel can field the ball and throw it to first again?

well after playing short stop and 2nd he's played the last 2 in left field. I think if you asked Smoak he never really could throw it to first.

So we've written him off as a starter?

I hope we move him up to AAA pretty soon. It would be nice to see Murphy in the bigs this year to see what we have.

Four early impressions from the Midwest League

By Emily Waldon

Jordan Groshans, SS

Current Assignment: Class-A Lansing (Blue Jays)

Ht/Wt: 6-3/205 lbs. B/T: R/R DOB: Nov. 10, 1999

Season Stats: 78 AB, .346/.427/.500, 27 H, 11 R, 6 2B, 2 HR, 13 RBI

By this point in your reading, you’ve probably been able to piece together how deep the shortstop position is in the Midwest League this year.

Jordan Groshans, another (yes, we’re seeing a trend here) 19-year-old shortstop, entered the league as the Blue Jays’ first-round pick (12th overall) in the 2018 MLB draft. When looking at what qualifies as the preferred infielder profile, Groshans’ well-proportioned 6-3, 205-pound frame is hard to ignore.

Acquired for $3.4 million, an under-slot price tag, Groshans’ eye-catching offensive production is what showcased him to scouts and his seamless transition into the Gulf Coast League only helped to solidify Toronto’s investment.

Over 37 games with the GCL Blue Jays, Groshans slashed .331/.390/.500 with an .890 OPS, a 150 wRC+, 12 doubles, four home runs and 39 RBI.

Groshans’ profile is highlighted by his balanced frame and a great deal of natural athleticism. Already mixing plus bat speed and plus raw power, his biggest growth point looks to be his pitch recognition — and even that is far from a massive concern.

Leading into 2019, Groshans kept his strikeout rate below 20 percent at his prior two assignments, but he has managed to tip past that early this season, likely due to inexperience and him still learning to manage his bat speed.

Groshans, like many of the young shortstops at his level, isn’t locked in as a long-term fixture and there are talks of a possible move to the third base corner later on. He has a good enough feel for shortstop, but lacks a bit of the quick-twitch profile you’d like to see.

With a plus arm and defensive instincts in tow, he would be well served at third, although that could be an issue down the road as the third base post in Toronto isn’t likely to be open anytime soon.

I wouldn't be so sure about that...

If Vladdy isn't at 1B within the next few seasons I'd be pretty surprised...pleasantly surprised if it's cause he's actually solid at third.

All I could find was this Buffalo News article which doesn't really go into detail other than he's working hard, and the coaches don't expect him to be down much longer:

Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. building confidence through muscle memory

I love articles like this that paint a picture and give some depth to players' situations, but it's not very useful from an analytical viewpoint.

Gurriel’s had 13 games between 2B/SS and had 1 error so far on Apr 30, which was a fielding error at 2B not throwing.

Hasn’t heard or seen any bad things about Gurriel’s arm since he got sent down.

He’s had 3 games in LF so they’re serious about giving him reps there.

The Padres fangraphs list is out and goes 55 deep!

If they are in playoff contention, it would be a great spot to get value for stroman, sanchez..

12:42 Is it time for Jays fans to give up on Alford?

Eric A Longenhagen

12:42 he looked no bueno when I saw him a few weeks ago, we're getting to that point.

Since being demoted to AAA, Lewis Brinson is slashing .192/.276/.308 in 7 games.

What a terrible trade for the Marlins.

Yup. The Padres being in contention is only going to help the Jays since we have Stroman and Giles who could help contending teams. One of those guys will go to the Padres IMO. Sanchez will go the Braves.

Padres have quite a bit of pitching depth. Not sure they need Marcus. Certainly don't need a-a-ron. I guess they might want Ken.

Paddack

Lucchesi

Lauer

Strahm

Margevicius

Quantrill

Allen

Pedro Avila

Lamet (TJS April 2018)

Nix (who knows)

Richards (TJS July 2018)

Mackenzie Gore (Would probably be their 2nd best MLB pitcher lol)

They would have almost certainly been better off taking our offer for Yelich. I could never understand why they valued Brinson over a vastly superior prospect in Bichette.

In related news, the Harold Ramirez show is imminent.

Wish we could have kept him, but free agents gonna free agent.

The Jays had Ramirez spend all of 2018 in AA despite doing well there. They had no intention of ever calling him up. I never saw him as a prospect but at least promote him to AAA in 2018 and see if maybe there is something there. He was smart to go to Miami.
