Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 (edited) IIRC Mike Trout does that same type of training. Yeah, Trout sprinting with a loaded barbell on his neck. It's f***ing dumb, there are better workouts that will improve performance more and won't result in severe injury. I sure hope the Angels' trainers put a stop to that ********. Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 It will be tough to do that IMO. Burnett pitched in a different era where he was able to neutralize LHBs with a sinker. Nowadays, the LHBs will put that sinker in the stands. His curveball was also more useful against LHB, I think. Kind of like Charlie Morton's, a big sweeper. Just going off SRF's small sample size, his slider appears elite. And he has nothing else. It's very reliever-ish. As far as potential offerings, the four seamer doesn't have a high spin rate so I'm not sure that becomes a go-to pitch against LHBs. I think he's going to have to come up with something out of nowhere at this point. Either a change or a 12-6 breaker. He probably will get a lot of RHBs out. I think the Rays would use an opener to go through top of the order LHBs, for example. I'm surprised you say this, I think his fastball is an elite pitch, the number of swings and misses that he generated from it were extremely high, and he actually generated more against lefties with it*. Obviously he needs to locate it consistently, that's a must if he's to stick as a successful starter, but even in its current wild state it's an excellent pitch. I agree that the slider is very good and then he doesn't have much else to offer, although I think the change has some decent movement and he'll just need to command it as well, I'd say it has some potential as a viable third offering. I wonder if learning a cutter to complement the fastball and slider would be good for him to use against lefties. *in a small sample size of course

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 I hope to f***ing god he isn't doing crosshit. The last thing we need his him getting injured. What he is doing in the video is Crossfit. It is core strength centric. The interesting thing is: The guys with millions of dollars are using rudimentary items available to persons who might not ever be able to afford a gym. Shapiro is boasting about the gym space expansion in the Dunedin renovation plan, so more guys can work out at once. When in reality, these elite mejor leagers really only need a field or some big back yard for a lot of this. More stuff available at Home Depot and Tire Kingdom then in a gym😉
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 The fastball had a great whiff rate but also got hammered. Hitters slugged it at .607 according to Baseballsavant. The command is shaky which is what scares me. The reason I cited spin rate is that usually that lets you get away with mistakes. Verlander can miss middle/middle and get a foul back. I think SRF gets it taken deep, like a normal pitcher. If he commands it, I think it's a good pitch. But I'm guessing he has to command it at the top of the zone which is a weird tunnel for his slider to follow against LHB. He definitely needs a cutter or a 4 seam change or a 12-6. Like what does he throw to a LHB when it's 2-0? He has nothing. It's a challenge fastball. It's hard to pitch like that. It's very Aaron Sanchez-y. I can't think of a lot of RHP that just go fastball/slider every AB. Maybe a good comp would be Foltynewicz? That guy got rocked by LHB for years, I wonder how he turned it around last year. Obviously he has a little more velo than SRF. Chris Archer perhaps. Would have to up his slider usage though. I see what you mean, I think it all comes down to command like and you and I agree on. I think for some of those elite pitchers that you mentioned, yes it's a factor of the spin rate, but also the fact that they feature premium velocity, elite secondaries and excellent command of all their pitches that makes them get away with a middle-middle mistake every now and then. If Reid-Foley improves his command substantially to where both the fastball and slider are both consistent, then I think he too can avoid getting crushed and get away with a mistake or two; the fact is that he just doesn't really know where the ball is going a lot of the time, and this obviously needs to be improved. As far as two pitch starters go, I can think of many of the game's elite and other good pitchers that feature such a mix: Archer, Lance McCullers (though his is curveball/fastball), Foltynewicz, Patrick Corbin, Luis Severino to name a few. There are varying factors to their success, but they can get by with pretty much a two-pitch mix with a rare third pitch mixed in to give hitters a different look.

More stuff available at Home Depot and Tire Kingdom then in a gym Sure, all you need is something heavy if you want to increase strength at the very end of it. However, it's still much easier to go to a gym where there's equipment where you can easily lift progressively more weight as strength increases, instead of trying to find a bigger stone in a field. Also, crossfit is not just about core strength, it's main thing is that it can increase peak strength and endurance strength to elite levels. Reality does not support that, Crossfit is literally just expensive circuit training, with a much higher risk of rhabdo and/or injury. No way would I want a multi-million dollar investment in a player go to waste because he did a stupid training program that led to injury.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Author Posted January 2, 2019 Borucki's not a prospect anymore. Ie. He's not a rookie.
Todd Verified Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Ryan Borucki has not made the team yet. And is still 23. September and October does not count because most teams are playing rookies.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Ryan Borucki has not made the team yet. And is still 23. September and October does not count because most teams are playing rookies. Borucki was pitching in June and July... He was not a September call up?? He was statistically our best SP pitcher last year. The numbers and eye test.. If anyone deserves a spot, based on last years performance and not years prior to last year, it is Ryan..
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Author Posted January 2, 2019 Ryan Borucki has not made the team yet. And is still 23. The typical criteria used are once a player loses his rookie eligibility, they drop off a prospect list.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Great list, Todd. Ryan Noda is too high and Chad Spamburger is too low, but other than that not much to comment on. I would swap Reggie Pruitt (don't like the look of him) with Cullen Large.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I predict Alford will be somewhere between 39 and 41 on the list. ^ Nailed it

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Ryan Noda is too high. You think Ryan Noda as the Jays 27th best prospect is too high? Boxy is going to take him Top 5 in the 2019 DDL prospect draft.

Todd Verified Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 As of right now the jays are to deep for him to be in the top20.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 As of right now the jays are to deep for him to be in the top20. Ryan Borucki-non rookie David Paulino Billy McKinney-almost a non rookie but is barely Yennsy Diaz Patrick Murphy Richard Urena-non rookie Rowdy Tellez Forest Wall Santiago Espinal Sean Wyman Leonard Jimenez Justin Maese Hagan Danner Noda is already better than these prospects and 2 should no longer be included in prospect lists imo.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 If I was ranking a top 16 it would be Vladito Bichette Pearson Jansen Pardinho Orelvis Martinez Kevin Smith SRF Groshans Hiraldo Noda Biggio Kloffenstein McKinney Spanberger Lucaino

Todd Verified Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 He's always battling something. Five straight years Has to work his way back to top 30. And 220 batting ave isn't going to cut it. Or time for new team
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 lol, Alford battled injuries through 2018, he's top 20 easily Alford pretty much played the whole season this year. He just flat out sucked. He's probably still top 20, but chances of him being a non zero at this point are pretty low.
