Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 When I was messing around on the minor league fangraphs leaderboards looking for the mystery player from Kiley McDaniel's chat, I ran across a few interesting tidbits. Old friend Yuniesky Bethancourt is still around, playing in Mexico. He's flirting with .400 too! Only Vlad's .394 bests Yuniesky's .389 across the MiLB. Blue Jays great, and player with an inexplicable 5-win season, Daric Barton is also in Mexico. He has a 211 wRC+ on a .333/.517/.586 slashline. It seems like he's content to let the Mexican League pitchers walk him. He's not exactly hitting for a ton of power so I doubt he parlays it into a major league comeback. Maybe he gets a spring invite for some team next season though. He's only just turned 33 a week ago. Daric Barton was basically Joey Votto without an elite hit tool and at least 50 raw power. Even in his great year he only had a .131 ISO as a first baseman; fascinating player.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 To be fair, he's produced a high BABIP pretty consistently for 3 years now. I think the odds are against him at the major league level, but it could be an interesting case study. To be even more fair, there's a difference between above average and over.400

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 The season Biggio is having is damn impressive. Where do people rank him now when it comes to our prospects?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Author Posted August 23, 2018 (edited) The season Biggio is having is damn impressive. Where do people rank him now when it comes to our prospects? Now that Borucki had graduated he's for sure in the Top 10. Somewhere between 8-10 I would say. Edited August 24, 2018 by Krylian
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 He doesn't get talked about "enough" because of Vlad, Soto and Acuna, but Eloy Jimenez is also dummying AAA as a 21 year old. 178 wRC+ with a 12% K rate, the projections have him as a 129 wRC+ hitter in the majors. With Quintana sucking, the White Sox came away like bandits out of this deal, Dylan Cease has been excellent this season as well.
jimedmonds Verified Member Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 even if half of the Jays Top 20 guys don't make it the majors and three quarters of them don't become at least replacement-level players, I'm just glad that things have come so far in 2 years - remember when most of the chat revolved around guys like Ramirez, Tallez, and McGuire? admittedly, still a bitter taste in my mouth about no major trades this past offseason - yeah, the injuries and assault was unanticipated, but most of us knew that this team wasn't going to compete this season. If the stars aligned fully, they were a 2nd WC team at best, and even that was highly optimistic. imagine the haul for JD, Smoak, Osuna, Happ, Estrada, and even Stroman in deals last winter? I'd take a 2018 Baltimoresque season for a better shot to compete by 2021. In the current state, a lot more work will still need to be done in the years to come.

Can't even imagine the apathy that would surround the franchise if the Jays went full Baltimore. That's never gonna happen
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Baltimore REALLY is not the model. The Jays are in a vastly better rebuild position right now than Baltimore is. It's not even close. The Orioles are making international investments for the first time ever right now. They are like a decade away from maybe being decent.

I think he was just saying that he would preferred the Jays to be god awful (like Baltimore Orioles awful) in 2018 if it improved our chances to compete in 2021. Nobody in their right mind looks at Baltimore as the model.

Probably the most interesting part of the article is they suggest his second-base defense grades out as solidly average by the advanced metrics.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 thank you - exactly that. I'm struggling with that though. The only way to be as god awful as Baltimore is to be completely incompetent, out of touch and 10 years behind. That doesn't get solved in 3 seasons...so wishing for 1 is like acknowledging you can't do the other.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Well, Vlad is back to being a monster. 3 more hits tonight(2 doubles). Current batting average is .373

Are the chances of him being sent back to New Hampshire pretty good? I'm unfamiliar with prospects going up than down after their current teams season ends.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2018 Author Posted August 25, 2018 Holy strikeout fiesta. 9 inning game between Bluefield and Pulaski tonight. Bluefield pitchers struck out 20 Pulaski batters and Pulaski pitchers struck out 18 Bluefield batters.

That’s just what I hope they do.

Why would you be terrified that Shatkins would bring Vlad up? I would say there's a .0000009% chance of that happening.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 I miss the Fisher Cats' green and yellow scheme.

If they call him up now they lose the fourth arbitration year. If they call up in mid april they lose a 4th cheap year. If they call him in june 2019 they get the most bang for their money let's look at the scenarios 1. Vlad Guerrero plays for Blue Jays from September 2018 to end of 2024 at which point he plays for the Boston Red Sox until 2041. 2. Vlad Guerrero plays for the Blue Jays from mid April 2019 to end of 2025 at which point he plays for the Boston Red Sox until 2041. (2025 is a 4th arbitration year and expensive) 3. Vlad Guerrero plays for the Blue Jays from mid June 2019 to end of 2025. at which point he plays for the Boston Red Sox until 2041. (in scenario 3 He plays for a couple less months, but is cheaper, 3.7ish cheap years, 3 arb years.) 4. Vlad Guerrero plays for the Blue Jays from xxxx to 2041. At which point he retires Which xxxx optimizes the chances of scenario 4?? Or do we care?? It's fine with us that Vlad, being a fat man with bad knees, joins the Red Sox at the same age Pablo did, we just want his good years as cheap as possible.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Kloffenstein has surfaced! They've got him starting 2 games so far, both just 1 inning each. 4K, 2B and 1 hit allowed in his 2 appearances, 2 IP
