Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2018 Author Posted August 14, 2018 I have a question about Vlad Jr's value. Is there even 5 players in all of baseball more valuable then him right now? I mean in the off-season what player wouldn't be accepted in a trade offer for Vlad Jr straight up? Soto?
Caper Verified Member Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Soto? Yeah, surely. But it's weird having a guy where I'm sure you could trade for Mike Trout... Or most anyone else.

Vlad was ranked 18th in MLB in value by Fangraphs. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2018-trade-value-11-to-20/ Lindor and Ramirez were #1 and #2.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 But for real, I guess this is the PTBNL for Oh? Or maybe a new deal? Heyman is confirming it is to complete the Oh trade. So it's officially Oh for Wall, Spanberger, and Baker.

Trout, Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Mookie Betts, Carlos Correa, probably Juan Soto, probably Matt Chapman (much higher floor), probably Freddie Freeman, Alex Bregman, I still don't fully buy into Aaron Judge but he's certainly more valuable at this point. Could make cases for Acuña, Benintendi, Kris Bryant, Corey Seager.

Agreed with you that you could acceptably take those players, but you would really just want to sit on Vlad at this point with control over him to see what he could do. Soto could be arguable but even then, we haven’t seen the full potential of Vlad and we know there’s tonnes Edited August 14, 2018 by jaysfaithful8
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2018 Author Posted August 14, 2018 Baseball America report on newly acquired Bryan Baker An 11th-round pick out of North Florida in 2016, Baker switched from starting to relieving last year and has progressively added velocity pitching out of the bullpen. He began this season sitting 93-95 mph in relief at high Class A Lancaster, jumped to 97-99 mph as the summer went on, and in his last outing touched 100 and 101 mph. Baker blows hitters away but is still learning to control his newfound power. He has a strikeout rate of 11.6 per nine innings but has also walked 6.8 per nine. Baker also throws a slider, changeup and cutter, but it's his fastball that is his bread-and-butter and what will take him up the system. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/rockies-fortify-bullpen-trade-with-blue-jays-for-seung-hwan-oh/

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 help me remember - lindor was obviously highly touted, but ramirez was not, amirite? where did he come from? how did he become so MVP the minute he hit the majors? confused where did he come from? - he came from the Cleveland minor league system and before that the Domincan Republic. He hit .300 as a minor leaguer. He played a lot of minor league games in the United States as a teenager. That is ussually a good sign. how did he become so MVP the minute he hit the majors? - he did not become MVP the minute he hit the majors. He hit the majors 5 years ago, in 2013, the year Dickey and Jose Reyes, and Josh Johnson were failing for the Blue Jays. In 2013 he was in the majors and bad, in 2014 he was in the majors and bad, in 2015 he was in the majors and bad, in 2016 he was in the majors and good, in 2017 he was in the majors and an all star and MVP candidate. It took him three years to become good, and four years to become an MVP candidate. It did not take a minute. In 2018 he has stepped up again. He now hits many homeruns. I don't know why he hit's so many homeruns. The rest of it makes sense. Line drive .300 hitter with 3 homers a year in the minors, often becomes line drive .300 hitter with 15 homers in the majors. This year he might hit 45 and win the homer title... that part is a surprise.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Really weird prospect year for this guy. 2017 and 2016 he hits .294 with like, no stolen bases. Now he steals 40+ but only hits .232 How the f*** does a guy with easy 70 speed (I think I've read this) and decent enough contact skills (K%) only hit .232 in the minor leagues? You'd think he could just run his way to a .250+ average on minor league defenses. His walk rate has basically doubled this year as well. wRC+ up to 104 and holding his own in the power department (7 hr, 7 triples, 27 doubles). It appears it's just the BABIP gods who are depressing what has otherwise been a very strong developmental season for Samad Taylor. For a kid who just turned 20 last month - he's an exciting prospect to follow.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Wander Franco is currently doing better than what Vlad was doing at the same age in Appy league: Vlad: .271/.359/.449 8HR through 62 games Franco: .366/.427/.601 8HR through 46 games
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Man, I can only imagine that trading Wander Franco for Danny Duffy in LoD this season must feel like a really bad time. Just as trading Tatis Jr. for Duffy the year prior undoubtedly would have as well. Oh, wait, the latter was me, and I've been on suicide watch for the past 16 months.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2018 Posted August 16, 2018 Hector Perez: 6 ip, 2 h, 1 er, 0 bb, 7 k, 1 hr, 69 pitches I kinda like this version of Perez a tad more than the one who walked 7 last time out.

Interesting. Hope a mechanical change was implemented and this isn't just a blip in his erratic consistency.

This most likely is a blip in erratic consistency lol, we'll need 5 or so starts before we can even begin to talk about him making changes/improvements.

Forrest Wall's OPS is at .828 in New Hampshire. Samad Taylor is having a strong finish to the season with a .982 OPS in August. ...to balance out your poor performance observation post.
