Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 I don't see Josh Donaldson and Vlad ever wearing a Jays uni at the same time during an MLB game. f*** you
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 JD will be traded at the Winter Meetings and Vlad won't debut til Sept in a write-off year.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 JD will be traded at the Winter Meetings and Vlad won't debut til Sept in a write-off year. I don't think any of those three things will happen!
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 I don't see this front office trading Donaldson unless the team is 15 back at the deadline next year. Shapiro has said on a few occasions already that they are looking to build on the strong fan base and attendance - so trading our best player before the season even starts is probably out of the question.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 My bold prediction is that we end up extending JD for 5-6 years this offseason. $25-27.5 million AAV. I think Josh takes the offer knowing he'll have to go against Machado and Harper in free agency. If he can get his $100 million + deal this offseason, I bet he takes it.

He will 32 already to start next season. I would offer him $125M guaranteed: 25, 30, 30, 35 for 2018-21 with a 35M option for 2022 ($5M buyout). Whether he takes it may be more about how he sees the Jays' chances to compete in the near term along with how he feels about playing in TOR, versus going to the highest bidder. As much as Vlad prefers to play 3B, he will be much happier in LF for the Jays than 3B for the Bisons, so we could see him in LF in 2019 with Donaldson at 3B. Then again, depending on how Smoak does next season, there could be an opening for an everyday 1Bman in 2019 (or sooner if Smoak were to - God forbid - revert to historical performance).
Ray Verified Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 5 years is a good sweet spot. They were offering Edwin $80 million over 4 years + a $20 million team option for a 5th and Edwin was a year older. I can't imagine they don't talk extension for JD this offseason unless JD shuts them off and is dead set on testing free agency.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 I don't think 5 for 125 gets it done. Maybe if you tack that on to the end of his upcoming season it would be a little more enticing. But if he'd do it I would take that in a second. Got to be a lot of surplus value on that, even if the last year two gets ugly.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 Depending on the defensive improvements Vlad is making at 3B, it would be poor asset management to have both Vlad and JD on the same team. Have been saying this for several months now Dave Cameron and Dinger agree with me. JD for controllable pitching makes too much sense.

I don't think it's wise to make decisions about MVP caliber players based upon the defense of an 18 year old prospect, especially when the reviews of that prospect's defense are mixed. I wouldn't be opposed to both exploring an extension and shopping him via trade though.

Have been saying this for several months now Dave Cameron and Dinger agree with me. For me it's just a case of I don't think Donaldson will re-sign with us before testing free agency, and I also don't think it's a good idea to give huge extensions to 32 year olds. If you know he's going to leave in a year, it really behooves a franchise in this state to get long-term assets for him. Shatkins can talk all they want about wanting to be competitive next year, but I think this is going to be the focal point of our off-season; everything hinges on the JD situation.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 A lot of this depends on ownership too. Do they want to compete for the next 2 to 3 seasons and are they willing to fund the payroll to do it? If so then a 6 for 180 for Donaldson through his age 37 season would make some sense if they are willing to provide the necessary commitment. Or would they rather take a step back and take the stress off of running a high payroll for a couple of years while we rebuild to coincide with Vlad Jr.'s arrival? Then trading Donaldson makes more sense.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 Using the advice you all gave me I was targeting Isaac Paredes, Mountcastle, Ryan Helsley and Pedro Avila in no specific order. Joey Wentz and Adonis Medina were just dropped. Fangraphs likes them, particularly Wentz who they rank #73 overall and I thought both looked pretty good as well. How would you compare those two pitchers to the 4 previous names I was considering? Thanks.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 Definitely claim Wentz That's what I was thinking. Simply stat scouting him he looks pretty darn good.

Got to be a lot of surplus value on that, even if the last year two gets ugly. My proposal was actually 4/125 guaranteed starting next season (avoid arbitration) with 5/155 if the Jays pick up the option. They could also just play it out in 2018 and let him test the FA market with Jays having the chance to match any outside offer. I kind of doubt anyone is going to offer more than 4/120. Now if they don't think they can sign him, it would be irresponsible to not look for a deal this offseason.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Spanky says Vlad has zero impact on JD decision though That's right, it all comes down to JD.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 That's right, it all comes down to JD. I agree, the guy only won a MVP. He deserves to play where he wants while he's here.

King Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Full game. I would recommend watching the entire thing but Stewart pitches at 1hr 8min mark 3500 RPM Curveball lol. This kid was something else. MLB average is ~2450, most don't top over 3000 That is pretty awesome and I want to see more. Edit - there are a few YouTube videos, pretty impressive stuff I'll post the link to the game if it is put up somewhere. Stewarts performance is worth re-watching on it's own but it was a fun game, especially if you like pitching. Every pitcher but 1 or 2 was up past 95.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Signing JD through age 37 at huge money is kind of insane. Not everyone ages like Beltre. Considering the type of 2nd half he is having, I say trade him this winter, but there will be something preventing that from happening, and it rhymes with Dodgers.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Bo returns and goes 2 for 5, kid sure loves that .400 mark.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Are you so dumb you have to ask these questions? You're the moron saying an 18 year-old prospect (albeit potentially the best Jays prospect ever) is going to call up the FO and say "Donaldson has to move or go". Don't be suck a f***stick.

If you can sign an MVP caliber player for a rate the FO deems reasonable they will, regardless of how amazing Vlad continues to be. Cocksmoker.
