Sickels isn't a scout, bro.

I never said he was. I said that he's seen prospects in person, has more credibility than your average fan, and actually uses the criteria of 'best prospect rather than some random 'fantasy' criteria that ignores defense.

How about you make your own list, then? Seems like an easy solution for everyone.

I'd love to see a Grant77 top 100 prospect list.

We could probably include it in our aggregate rankings (P2F).

For those who don't know, Grant is pretty knowledgable and he does actually scout most of these players on the radio.

You guys are never gonna let him live that down huh? Lol

The fact that they have to resort to fabricated stories to criticize me is a compliment. It's well known that the minor league games were televised.

By the way, your insults haven't changed the fact that you are all wrong. John Sickels still has much more credibility than a random group of casual fans.

I expect this to continue to be ignored as they focus on something else in order to avoid admitting their complete and utter stupidity.

I agree with this. Sickels is considered one of the 'major' lists, and his opinion definitely carries a lot more weight than our compilation of baseless opinions & stat scouting.

I like reading Sickels' lists. He may not watch all the games but his lists are always pretty informative.

I'd rather read his stuff than Keith Law's.

Yeah, because Sickels isn't a high-horse riding prick. Sickels actually explains his rankings and doesn't pretend like he's always right.

I don't mind Sickels either, but his lists are anything but informative. For example:

"1) Andrew Benintendi, OF, Red Sox, Grade A

2) Yoan Moncada, INF, White Sox, Grade A

3) Dansby Swanson, SS, Braves, Grade A

4) Alex Reyes, RHP, Cardinals, Grade A

5) Amed Rosario, SS, Mets, Grade A/A-

6) Tyler Glasnow, RHP, Pirates, Grade A/A-

7) Gleyber Torres, SS, Yankees, Grade A/A-

8) Jose De Leon, RHP, Rays, Grade A/A-

9) Rafael Devers, 3B, Red Sox, Grade A-

10) Ozzie Albies, INF, Braves, Grade A-

COMMENT: Winter consensus across the industry puts Andrew Benintendi at number one. In this case, I agree with consensus. Other picks are standard except for De Leon, who usually ranks lower on other lists. I’m in love with his pitchability however; just have to hope he stays healthy. Glasnow’s industry stock is down a bit but I think people may be over-reacting."

Where's the information? There's virtually nothing there.

We all follow and, in some cases, even watch prospects play baseball. I would take a consensus list of informed baseball fans over just one guy that does more or less the exact same thing that we do.

The players are broken down more on the team Top 20s

That's because you're only reading that one list. Sickels site produces a ton of free content. Top prospect lists for all teams with much more detailed breakdowns, sleeper lists, write-ups on all the callups, draft prospect reports through the year. Saying he doesn't provide information is a very unfair criticism to lay on someone who provides a mountain of free content year in and year out.

He actually has connections and talks with scouts. He's been doing this for a long time. We have an insular community where a lot of groupthink occurs.

Okay, that was unfair of me. I've read the other lists. But the majority of his write-ups quote only stats and facts that almost any baseball fan knows.

1) Yoan Moncada, 2B-3B, Grade A: Age 21, signed by Red Sox out of Cuba in 2015; traded to White Sox in Chris Sale deal; hit .294/.407/.511 with 15 homers, 45 steals, 72 walks, 124 strikeouts in 405 at-bats between High-A and Double-A, then went 4-for-19 with 12 strikeouts in MLB trial; Number Two prospect in all of baseball, just behind Andrew Benintendi; switch-hitter with power, speed, good eye for the strike zone; could be 20+ homers, 20+ steals, 80 walks producer and that could be an underestimate; had issues with contact during MLB trial but shouldn’t be a long-term factor; defense needs more polish and time in Triple-A will be useful but should be a lineup mainstay soon. ETA 2017."

You or I could write that.

That's great that he has connections to scouts, but it doesn't come through in his writing. I actually have nothing against Sickels - and do read his articles - but he is what he is, in my opinion.

Maybe I'm giving us too much credit. Either way, I really don't think it ultimately matters much which of these two lists is included among the aggregate rankings. I thought it would be fun to include ours instead of Sickels' this season. Perhaps the right answer is to include neither, but I'll leave ours in the composite rankings unless the consensus is to have it removed.

Posted
I would have included both.
The only thing with that is that I am hoping to stay consistent with the number of lists included year to year. Last year I used seven, and this year I plan to use seven as well. It would be interesting to be able to directly compare lists year to year.

Is DJ Davis finally going to breakout and be the can't miss prospect many projected him to be?

Hit 174/252/266 in 100+ AB in the Australian Baseball League this past winter. I'm going with no.

Jesus, what a waste of a pick

It happens.

He's one of those toolsy players who if they ever did put it together is probably a really good player, but like a vast majority of toolsy players he didn't. Can't fault the pick in hindsight though I think the consensus was like the Romero pick there were better players on the board at the time.

It's not like AA said any different. He was looking athletes with high upside.

He did well with pitching, though.

how many more years in the system does he have before free agency? 2?
