This is purely to protect him form the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft. He'd have been gone in a heartbeat.I doubt they see him as major league ready right now

 

I was under the impression that a 40 man roster spot wasn't necessary to protect a player from the minor league Rule V.

If ranking the AFL position players just on tools alone, Alford would most definitely be at or near the top. With a collection of four plus tools—speed, power, range and arm—and supreme athleticism as well as sound hitting instincts, Alford just needs more development time to refine his approach at the plate. The former college football player missed part of the 2016 regular season to a pair of injuries and was making up for the lost time in the AFL. The 22-year old outfielder put up impressive numbers (.253/.349/.440, three homers, eight stolen bases) before going down with an injury late in the season.

 

I hope I am really wrong here but I am not enamored with Alford at all. The only thing that jumps out of his hitting stats is his strikeout ratio and that has me gravely concerned.

That would be true if he were in AAA or AA, because they can protect additional playerss at those levels, but not single A which is where Borucki was.

Which leads me to ask this, then why knowing this do teams just not promote players like him up to AA ball and avoid this or having to add them to the Forty!

 

Was this also the same for Pedermo and Rios was it???

Or was that a different issue then this one or rule?

I don't think that is true. There are specific protection rosters for Class AA and AAA. They wanted to protect Borucki from getting selected in the MLB phase. Otherwise they would have just had him on the AAA or AA reserve list. Is there a rule saying a player must have played in AA or AAA before he can be added to the reserve list? That doesn't seem right

In the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft, teams may select any eligible player left off the major league 40-man roster or the Triple-A reserve roster of 38 players. In the Double-A phase of the draft, teams may select any eligible player left off the major league roster, the Triple-A reserve roster or the Double-A reserve roster of 37 players. In other words, a player selected in the Triple-A phase does not rank among his organization’s top 78 talents, and a Double-A selection does not rank among its top 115. In these cases, players are not required to remain on a particular roster. The player’s contract is irrevocably assigned to the drafting team and the drafting fee ($12,000 for Triple-A, $4,000 for Double-A) is paid.

 

 

From the sounds of this teams plug up the AAA reserve roster with the top 38 eligible players in the organization outside the 40 man roster, then the AA roster with the next 37 best eligible players in the organization. This is why, no one good is ever taken in the minor league portion of the draft.

I mean we the BJMB had did we not them all in our top 15 list!!!

Borucki made the Jays 40 man roster. The next 38 best rule 5 draft eligible players in the organization would be placed on the AAA reserve. The next 37 after the AAA reserve would be on the AA reserve. Players on the AAA reserve can be taken in the MLB phase of the draft and players on the AA reserve can be taken in the AAA portion of the draft. Anyone left off the AA reserve could be taken in the AA portion of the draft.

 

Rios and Perdomo are likely on the AAA reserve.

Some teams do promote players at the end of seasons to avoid stuff like this if they think the player will be at the next level the next season.

He can't really be judged the same way as other 22 year old prospects though, given his very late start to baseball. He's really only had 1.5 seasons worth of PAs, whereas another 22 year old drafted out of high school would have 5 full seasons of minor league PAs.

I was reading that article on Sportsnet, it was worth the read for his quotes on Vladdy Jr alone. Pretty exciting to hear that kind of praise from a guy who is obviously highly regarded in the business.

Ya. I hear his arm is solid...but I'm looking at it from the 'I've never seen these kinds of tools before' standpoint. Don't think his arm is to that level.

Promising to hear that the bat has that kind of potential.

 

What does everyone put the odds at that Vladdy starts the season in Lansing?

It's obviously good to hear but to be honest the old scout seems a bit deluded.

 

His scouting prowess is a gift from god? He calls his old signees on the phone to correct their swings with immediate results? meh.

100% he plays full season ball unless he suffers an injury.

It's possible. There are always a couple 18 year old hitters in the Midwest League (Correa, Lindor, Torres, Adames)

34 BB vs. 35 K is so sexy for a 17 year old.

 

Would be sexy for a 17 year old in A ball. Rookie ball is full of young pitchers with no control, giving out walks like flyers at a rave.
