Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Tellez reaches the 20 homerun plateau. ...........but he can't hit the baseball against high level pitching.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Is a good comp for Tellez prime Justin Morneau? Not a bad comparison in terms of "ceiling"... Some know-it-alls are allready calling you out. Tellez is about where Votto, Rizzo and Morneau were at 21... "about" -- he didn't really dominate lower levels.. I'm sure there are lots of other guys that reached the same stage... Travis Snider for one. Hope he works out.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Author Posted August 30, 2016 Tellez could end up being a complete stiff. I'm hopeful that he can be a good bat for the Jays in a year or two, but I've become a lot more realistic with my old age. He could be a completed flop or he could be dealt in a package for some immediate help somewhere. Those are also possibilities.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I'm more comfortable with an Adam Lind comparison than a Votto comparison. Votto had mediocre minor league stats, as compared to what he became. I think at this point it is hard to know what Tellez will be. There is no reason to think he will become a Votto. Adam Lind might be a reasonable expectation. It is hard for me to picture a player being the next "Adam Lind", Adam Lind is like different ever year 1. Prime Justin Morneau (2009) 2. Late 90s bad-bad Joe Carter (2010/2011/2016) 3. Solid (2013, 2015) 4. Frank Catalato (2014) Adam Lind is like a different guy every year. Very strange. Or maybe not. Maybe this random sequence around .270 .330 .470 is exactly what you would expect.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Tellez has way more power than Lind? Trumbo might be a better comp
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Tellez has way more power than Lind? Trumbo might be a better comp Babe Ruth comp
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Babe Ruth comp lol... shut up, Jonn.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Tellez has way more power than Lind? Trumbo might be a better comp He is progressing faster the Trumbo and has a better k/bb ratio... The power of Trumbo with a better k/bb ratio?? More power then Lind?? Then he is getting pretty good... What about Garret Jones?? No. He is way ahead of Garret Jones. Actually when you do this little experiment you realize that Tellez looks like the good hitters did when they were 21. He looks a bit better than the mediocre sluggers looked at 21.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Easy Olerud, he's fun to think about, but... Maybe he will be the next Jon Singleton... I appreciate that this is unpredictable. He will be somewhere between Jon Singleton and Joey Votto... I will say that.

vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 It's weird to me how they give credit to the arms developed through the system to the teams pitching coach.
nmrch Verified Member Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 You can only make comparisons based on how players have done at similar levels. Statistically Tellez has done as well as almost any current/historical good 1B/DH have done at the same level. Obviously that doesn't mean he'll be a successful big leaguer but the same level comparisons to Rizzo, Votto, Adrian Gonzalez are valid, as are comparisons to guys like Singleton, Snider(not that he's a complete failure).
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Tellez seems pretty smart http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/rowdy-tellez-a-future-jay-and-the-chip-on-his-shoulder/
